In the SE foothills of the Ox Mountains, in rough heather-grown pasture which was converted to forestry in December 2016. The burnt mound (c. 10m NE-SW; at least 7m NW-SE) is located in a natural hollow of damp ground, bordered to NW by a steeply rising slope and to SE by a broad, raised spine of rock outcrop, to S of which ground falls away steeply. The burnt mound was exposed in section in a forestry trench, and was discovered during archaeological monitoring of the forestry works. A dense layer (L c. 9m NE−SW; D 0.3-0.35m) of small, angular, heat-shattered stone fragments in black, charcoal-rich soil is visible in the trench (Wth 0.7m; D 0.5m). At the NE limits of the layer, a number of large stones and slabs protrude from the section face, and large stones are also evident in the upcast material bordering the trench; it is possible that they represent remnants of a trough or other structure associated with the burnt mound. An intact portion of the mound can be traced in the area bordering the NW side of the trench. It is evident as a very low, grass-covered rise, overlain by the NE−SW field wall which lies 2m to NW of the forestry trench. On the NW side of the wall, in the adjoining field, an area of firm, grass-covered ground (c. 5m NE−SW; c. 4m NW−SE), free of the heather and scrub, represents the W-NW limits of the mound. Another burnt mound (MA061-225----) located 15m to SW, and a third (MA061-226----) 40m to SSE. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 24 January 2017 - MA061-225: Burnt mound, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA061-225----. In the SE foothills of the Ox Mountains, in an area of level, damp ground, at the N margins of steeply-sloping field of rough, heather-grown pasture which was converted to forestry in December 2016. This burnt mound was discovered during archaeological monitoring of the forestry works. It is exposed in section in a forestry trench. A dense layer (L 5m NE−SW; D 0.25-3m) of small, angular, heat-shattered stone fragments in black, charcoal-rich soil is visible in both section faces of the trench (Wth 0.7m; D 0.55-6m). The layer extends to the full depth of the trench, and is directly overlain by a peat layer (D 0.3-0.4m) which underlies sod (D 0.1m). There is no trace of the burnt layer in a parallel forestry trench located 5m to SE. A very slight rise in ground level is evident in the grassy margin between the trench and the field wall which lies 4m to NW, but the full extent of the burnt mound is unclear. Another burnt mound (MA061-224----), cut by the same trench, is located 12m to NE, and a third (MA061-226----) is located 20m to SE. In the SE foothills of the Ox Mountains, in the level N part of a steeply sloping field of rough, heather-grown pasture which was converted to forestry in December 2016. It is located on damp, level ground close to the SW end of a raised spine of bedrock which extends to NE. Ground falls away steeply to SE. This burnt mound was discovered during archaeological monitoring of the forestry works. It is exposed in section in two parallel NE−SW forestry trenches, set 6m apart. A dense layer (L 5-6m NE−SW; D 0.3m) of small fragments of heat-shattered stone in black, charcoal-rich soil is visible in the section faces of both trenches (Wth 0.7m; D 0.55-6m). The outline of the mound cannot be traced at surface level, and its full extent is unclear. Another burnt mound (MA061-225----) is located 20m to NW, and a third (MA061-224----) 40m to NNW.
