In pasture, located on a low rise, overlooked by rising ground to S. A stream is located 100m to N, meandering through a small, shallow valley of damp ground. The N boundary of the townland coincides with the course of the stream. Slightly raised subcircular area (26.5m N-S; 30m E-W) defined SE−NNW by a gravelly earth bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.4m at W), topped with stones; at NW−E by a levelled scarp, and at E−SSE by a field wall, which respects the curve of the ringfort. There is a fosse outside the bank, which is evident on the E arc as a shallow depression (Wth 3m; D 0.3m) and at S−NW is defined on its outer edge by a field wall, which arcs around the ringfort at a distance of c. 3m outside the bank. There is a gap (Wth 1.8m) in the enclosing bank at SSE. The interior is domed, sloping down gently from centre to the perimeter at S−SE and more steeply from centre to N−NE. The very faint mossy outline of a circular feature (diam. c. 5m), of uncertain significance, is visible in the centre of the interior. There are two shallow depressions on the outer edge of the interior, one (5m NE−SW; 3m NW−SE) abutting the wall at SE and one (3m N−S; 3m E−W) abutting the inner edge of the bank at S. A field wall/property boundary crosses the interior on a N−S axis to W of centre. A roughly square drystone vernacular structure (max. dim. 2m) abuts the outer face of the field wall on the SE arc of the rath. In pasture, located on top of a hill, with a steep fall of ground to E–SE, overlooking to an area of wet pasture. There is a stream 70m to S. A circular area (24.8m E–W; 25.2m N–S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.65m at NE, 2.4m at SW; int. H 0.7m at NE, 0.8m at SW; ext. H 1.6m at NE, 1.5m at SW), and enclosed by a fosse (Wth 1.8m at NE, 1.6m at SW) and from NNE–SSSW by an outer bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.6m at NE). The inner bank features a lot of stones protruding randomly from the sod- and heather-covering on the internal and external slopes. A gapped series of large slabs and boulders form a kerb on the S arc of the inner face of the bank. The bank is incorporated into a later field fence at W–NNE, which respects the curve of the rath. The fosse appears relatively narrow, and at SW–N is discernible only as a slight depression. The fosse has a rather vertical inner edge at NNE–S, which suggests that it may have been recut. The outer bank appears as a broad, low rise, with stones protruding randomly along the inner top edge. It cannot be traced on the NW arc, and is overlain at SW by a later field wall on a NW−SE axis. There is are two adjacent breaks (Wth 1-2m) in the inner bank at N, but it is unclear if either is an original entrance. A partly collapsed souterrain (MA072-014001-), evident as a linear depression (L 10m NE–SW) with a few in situ lintels, extends through the SW quadrant of the interior. A possible circular house (MA072-014002-), defined by a stony rim, is located in the centre of the interior, at the NE end of the souterrain passage. Moss-covered wall footings (Wth 1.2m; H 0.2m), possibly the remains of a later field wall, extending from the possible house to the rath bank at SE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 February 2021 - MA072-014001: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-014001-. Located in a rath (MA072-014). A souterrain passage of drystone construction extends on a NE-SW axis through the SW quadrant of the rath. The passage terminates in the rath bank at SW where an in situ roof lintel is exposed in the eroded slope of the bank. From there, it extends for 10m on to NE to the centre of the rath. A section (L 2.2m; Wth 1.15m) of the passage remains intact close to the bank at SW, with drystone walls supporting large roof lintels. To N of this the passage appears to be partly collapsed and can be traced as a sod-covered, sunken linear feature (Wth 0.8-1m; D 0.6m). Midway along its length, there is a junction with a side passage, which branches of for 2m to NW and then turns to NNE for a further 2m. The side passage is evident at ground level as a shallow, sod-covered depression. The main NE–SW passage terminates roughly in the centre of the rath at a circular stone feature, which may be part of the souterrain or may be the remains of a house (MA072-014002-). Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 February 2021 - MA072-014002: House - indeterminate date, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-014002-. Located on a slight rise in the centre of a rath (MA072-014----) adjacent to a souterrain (MA072-014001-). A roughly circular stony area (5m NE–SW; 4.5m NW–SE) defined by a slightly raised rim (Wth c. 1.2m; H c. 0.3m) of jumbled stone. The interior appears slightly sunken with stones protruding from the surface. It is located at the NE end of a partly collapsed souterrain passage. A large slab at the S edge of the circle may be a roof lintel of the souterrain. This circular feature may be part of the souterrain, perhaps surface subsidence above a chamber, or it could be the remains of circular house, perhaps enclosing an entrance to the souterrain. In pasture, located on a low E−W ridge, with good views, especially to S over a small stream valley. Slightly raised circular area (24m N−S; 26m E−W) defined by a low, sod-covered stony bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.3m). In parts at SE−S the stone bank is little more than a low stony lip (Wth 1.2m) on top of an earthen scarp. The stone bank peters out at W and is reduced to a scarp at NW−N. Stones protrude from the sod along the NE arc of the bank, possibly part of a kerb or stone facing. A slight depression (Wth c. 2m), possibly a fosse, is evident outside the bank on the W half of the rath. There is no clearly defined entrance, but the enclosing bank/scarp is lowest at S, where there is a low eroded break (Wth 0.6m). Ground level appears lower or slightly sunken in the NE quadrant. A field wall, on a N−S axis, crosses the rath to W of centre. A small shallow depression (c. 3m across) abuts the W side of this wall in the NW quadrant. A stand of conifers grows in the W third of the interior. A few hawthorn trees grow around the perimeter. It is difficult to determine if this is a rath or cashel. The enclosing scarp appears to be earthen but the stony bank that tops it may be a collapsed wall. In pasture, on a ridge, overlooking an expanse of lowlying damp pasture to N. Circular platform (27.5m N–S; 27m E–W) defined by a drystone wall (c. 3.5m at N, c. 3m at S; int. H 1.4m at S; ext. H 1.45m at N, 1.5m at S). It straddles the natural elevation and is built up on the N half to create a level interior. The earthen scarp of the platform is faced and topped with a wall, which shows evidence of later modification. To NE–SE the wall serves as a property boundary and is bordered externally by a farm road/trackway. The wall at NE–NW is reduced to a low sod-covered rise (Wth 2m), the inner face of which has been subsumed into a later field wall. A souterrain (MA072-089001-) is located in the SW quadrant, close to the enclosing wall. There is a depression, obscured by blackthorn and animal burrows, in the SE quadrant. Blackthorn and brambles encroach on the W half of the interior. Heaps of field clearance stones and boulders are piled against the exterior of the cashel at N–NW and at S. Located in a cashel (MA072-089----), adjacent to the enclosing wall at SW. A pit or depression (diam. c. 3m; D c. 1m) is evident on the line of the enclosing wall of the cashel. A stone lintel is visible in the NE side of the pit, set 0.5m below interior ground level of the cashel. It covers a subterranean passage (Wth 0.55m; H 0.4m) of drystone construction. The passage is partly infilled with field clearance debris.
