In rough pasture, located on a low rise, affording good views. Raised, roughly circular area (28.5m NE–SW) defined by an earth and stone bank. The bank (Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.75m; ext. H 1.8m at SW) is best preserved at SE–WSW where remnants of an internal stone kerb or facing are visible in parts, and where the steep external slope is enhance by the natural fall of ground. At NW, N-NE and E–SE, it has been incorporated into later field fences; at N this has resulted in the bank being modified into a straight externally stone-faced fence (Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.8m). The interior has been built up on the S–SW to create a level surface and compensate for the natural slope. The perimeter is thickly ringed with blackthorn, hawthorn, hazel and brambles. There is a ringfort (MA073-019----) 170m to SE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 June 2021 - MA073-018: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-018----. In rough pasture, located on a low hillock. A road skirts the NW side of the hillock. This cashel is named ‘Cashelgal Fort’ on the 1838 and 1919 OS 6-inch map. Slightly raised, circular area (31m NE-SW; c. 32m NW–SE) defined by the remains of a drystone wall. The wall (Wth c. 3m) is low, dilapidated and largely sod-covered. The external wall face retains its basal two to three courses (max. H 0.8m), consisting of large stone blocks, but has collapsed above this level. The internal wall face (H 0.1m) is almost entirely collapsed or robbed, reduced to a low, sod-covered spread of loose stone, almost flush with interior ground level, with inner edge marked by a low, discontinuous line of sod-covered stones; at NNE–E it has a raised, sod-covered stony rim. A later field wall, on a NE–SW axis, crosses the E–SE edge of the cashel, overlying the inner wall face. There is a berm-like stony embankment or scarp (max. Wth 3.5m) outside the wall at SSW–NW. At the SW a small, semi-circular area (Wth 2m) has been quarried out of this scarp. The entrance may have been at the ENE where there is a gap (Wth c. 2m) in the enclosing wall, now partly obscured by the overlying field wall. Much of the E half of the level interior is engulfed in blackthorn, and hazel trees grow around the perimeter. There is a ringfort (MA073-019----) c. 300m to NE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 June 2021 - MA073-019: Ringfort - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA073-019----. In an expanse of rolling, reclaimed pasture, straddling the SE-facing slope of a rise, with good views to SE–W–N. There is rising ground to NE–E. This ringfort has been partly levelled. It survives as a raised, circular area (21.6m N–S; 21m E–W) defined by a broadly slumped scarp (Wth slope 3.7m at N, 6m at S; H 0.5m at N, 1.6m at S). The enclosure appears to have been built up on the S half to compensate for the natural slope. The interior slopes down from NW to SE. A slight, roughly circular rise (diam. 3-4m) can be discerned in the E half of the interior, but its significance is unclear. A rath (MA074-004----/MA073-020----) is located c. 300m to ENE in the same field, and another rath (MA073-017----) is c. 200m to NW. In pasture, located on a NW–SE ridge, at the break of slope on the NNE-facing side, with excellent views N–SE over lowlying grassland. There is rising ground at S–SW. Broadly oval area (24m N–S; c. 27m E–W) defined by a low bank (Wth 2.2.2m; int. H 0.2m at W; ext. H 0.5m at W, 0.8m at ENE) at SE−NE, truncated at E–SE by a later field fence on a NNE–SSW axis. At N the external slope of the bank is enhance by the natural fall of ground, and there are traces of external stone facing. On the S arc the bank is reduced to a scarp and is overlain by a field fence on a roughly E-W axis. The interior has slight drop in ground level in the NE quadrant. The surface is uneven. In an expanse of rolling reclaimed pasture, located towards the base of a S-facing slope giving extensive views to S–SE. This rath is evident as a raised, circular area (26.5m N–S; 25.2m E–W) defined by a low, broadly slumped scarp (Wth slope 2m at N, 5.7m at S; H 0.4m at N, 0.7m at S), which has been partly levelled. The platform appears to have been built up higher on the S half to compensate for the natural slope. There is a rath (MA073-019----) located c. 200m to WSW and another rath (MA074-005----) c. 215m to NE. In improved pasture, located on a slight rise with good views. This rath is shown on the 1838 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps as a D-shaped enclosure, bordered on the straight side at N by a field boundary. It is evident as D-shaped platform (c. 28.7m NW–SE; c. 23m NE–SW) defined by a partly levelled, broadly sloping scarp (H c. 1.6m). The scarp (H 1.7m) on the straight side to NNE probably represents a truncation of an originally circular enclosure. The interior surface is rather uneven, with a slope down from centre to E and SE, and a more marked dip to SW. There is a rath (MA074-004----) c. 200m to SW and another rath (MA074-006----) is located c. 350m to ENE. In rough, stony and wettish pasture, straddling a low rise, with good views. There is a stream/drain c. 40m to SW, and a larger stream c. 70m to E. Oval area (21m N–S; 15.5m E–W) enclosed on the W half by a sod-covered stone bank (Wth 1.7m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.9m) of earth and stone, and on the E half by a drystone field wall. The external face of the stone bank at S–W is roughly faced with upright slabs and occasional boulders. Immediately outside the stone bank on the W half, there is a band (Wth c. 2m) of markedly wet ground, possibly indicative of a fosse, but this feature is not evident on the E half. A slightly raised undulation is evident 3-4m outside the field wall on the E arc, which may represent the original extent of the enclosure. The interior appears slightly raised at NE, with a gentle slope down to S and SW. The surface is stony in parts. A slight hollow abuts the inner face of the enclosing stone bank at NE. There is a gap (Wth 2.4m) at the WNW, and several narrow gaps/eroded sections of the stone bank on the W half of the enclosure. The interior is planted with conifers.
