In pasture, on a level expanse of elevated ground, with good views in all directions. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure planted with trees; not shown on the 1930 edition. This enclosure, most likely a rath, has been levelled. A slightly raised flat area (27.5m N−S; 34m E−W) defined by a slight undulation/levelled scarp can still be traced at ground level. Outside this are barely discernible undulations suggesting an encircling fosse (Wth c. 2.5m) with an external bank (Wth 4-5m). Trees grow on the perimeter at W and N. There is no visible trace at ground level. The field fences at N, E and S sides of the field may overlie the enclosure. According to local tradition, there was a 'fort' with a souterrain (MA111-036001-) here. In a large pasture field, on slightly elevated level ground with a gently undulating fall of ground to NE towards a drain/stream. A field system of irregular or subrectangular fields, incorporating a sub-circular enclosure (MA111-045002-), is visible as cropmarks in aerial photographs (SMR file: CUCAP AYR 74 & 75). It appears to have extended over an area of c. 25m N−S by c. 200m E−W. It was levelled during land reclamation; there is no visible trace at ground level. Modern field drains extend E−W along both the N and S sides of the valley at the edges of the wet ground. The mound is located toward the W end of the valley, at the interface between wet ground and rising, drier ground at N.
