In a graveyard (MA021-035002-) which is named 'Kilfian' on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. No visible remains. The church is not indicated on the OS 6-inch maps; it appears that all trace was gone by the early 1800’s when O’Donovan recorded that the church ‘has been demolished.’ (OS Letters 1838, vol. 1, 275). The placename ‘Kilfian’, and the presence of a cross-slab (MA021-035003-) in the graveyard indicate the possibility that a church of early medieval date existed here. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 May 2016 - MA021-035002: Graveyard, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA021-035002-. In undulating grassland, located on a low elevation, with a gradual fall of ground for 100m to S to the banks of the Rathroe River, which marks the townland boundary. Overlooked to W by rising ground. This graveyard is named ‘Kilfian’ on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, and is indicated as a polygonal enclosed area (c. 30m NNW–SSE; c. 40m ENE-WSW), accessed at the NW corner by a N-S road. Its depiction on the 1923 edition, where it is named ‘Kilfian Burial Gd.’, indicates that the graveyard was extended to N, doubling in length to a roughly rectangular area, and a further extension to N took place in the latter half of the 20th century. The oldest part of the graveyard, in the S part of its current extent, occupies slightly elevated ground and is grass-covered. It is enclosed at E, S and W by a mortared stone wall capped with concrete. The original access road is preserved in the line of a grassed-over path incorporated into the W side of the 20th-century extension. The old graveyard is distinguished by a concentration of mid-to-late 18th- and early 19th-century graveslabs and 19th-century headstones, some standing at the head of rectangular plots outlined by a low concrete kerb. The earliest inscription noted is on a graveslab dated 1762. Interspersed amongst the formal headstones and graveslabs, are many informal gravemarkers consisting of low, roughly rectangular or irregular-shaped uninscribed stones, set in N−S rows, many barely protruding above the grass. There is no visible trace of a church (MA021-035001-). There is a cross-slab (MA021-035003-) in the E half of the old graveyard. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 May 2016 - MA021-035003: Cross-slab, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA021-035003-. In a graveyard (MA021-035002-) named ‘Kilfian’ on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, located in the oldest part, at the S end of a walled 20th-century extension. A pillar-like sandstone block (L at least 0.62m; Wth 0.18m; T 0.08-0.1m), rectangular in cross-section, set upright in the ground, with a narrow-limbed Latin cross (L at least 0.44m) inscribed in false relief on the W face. The top of the cross is 0.07m below the top of the stone; the base is not visible as it is concealed below ground. The arms (H 0.03m) extend the full width of the stone. The cross is outlined by a shallow groove (Wth 0.01-0.015m) which expands to four roughly circular ‘armpits’ or depressions (diam. 0.04m) flanking the intersection of the vertical and horizontal members, giving the effect of a ringed-cross. At the centre of the intersection, there is a shallow circular dimple or depression (diam. 0.02m). The portion of the shaft (L 0.14m) which rises above the arms is embellished with a slightly hollowed centre, and widens gradually along its length to an expanded terminal. The portion of the shaft (L at least 0.25m) which extends below the arms is plain, and retains a uniform width (0.02m).
