In an expanse of rough heather- and scrub-covered pasture and bog, located on an elongated NNW–SSE rise, overlooked immediately to E by a higher rise. Slightly raised, roughly circular area (23.6m NNW–SSE) defined at E–S by an earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.1m, at SE), reduced elsewhere to a scarp (ext. H 1.2m at W), and enclosed by an fosse (Wth 2.5m, at SE) and external stony bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.35m; ext. 0.6m, at SE). The external bank is evident as a low stony rise, which can be traced at NW–N and SE–SW. Elsewhere it is obscured by overgrowth and difficult to trace; a section at NE may be partly levelled. The interior slopes down from the centre to NE and E. There is a hint that the NE quadrant is marked off from the rest of the interior by a slight scarp, extending NW–SE through the interior, but this could not be determined with certainty due to overgrowth. A shallow depression (c. 3-4m NW–SE; c. 2m NE–SW) can be discerned beneath the overgrowth in the SW quadrant. The interior is densely covered by ferns, brambles and gorse, with gorse and hawthorn defining the perimeter. In average pasture, located in gently undulating terrain, bordered to E by a N-flowing stream, and overlooked to E and S by higher ground. A turlough, named Stripe Lough, is indicated towards the southern end of the area on the 1837 OS 6-inch map, but is not shown on the 1919 edition. To N and S are expanses of rough, heather-covered boggy land. A fragmentary system of relict field walls of unknown date can be discerned preserved within the N−S/E−W grid of modern field walls which define larger, rectangular fields. The older walls are evident as low, sod-covered stony rises, or as gapped lines of individual stones protruding from hummocks of grass. They tend to extend somewhat counter, often on a NE-SW/NW-SE axis, to the orientation of the modern field walls. They define rectangular, sub-rectangular or irregular-shaped field plots with maximum dimensions of c. 15-50m, with occasional smaller sub-divisions (max. dim. c. 5-10m). They are dotted with small field clearance cairns. A possible house (MA062-118002-), a mound (MA062-118003-), an enclosure (MA062-126----) and a possible cashel (MA062-119----) are located within the field system. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 January 2021 - MA062-118002: House - indeterminate date, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA062-118002-. In a stand of sycamore and hawthorn, located on a slight rise. There is a farmstead c. 50m to NE. A field system (MA062-118001-) extends to S. An oval area (11.5m NNW-SSE; 9-10m ENE-WSW) defined by a sod-covered earth and stone rise or bank (3.4-4.4m; int. H 0. 15m-0.7m; ext. H 0.6-1m), with a gap (Wth 2m) at SSE. Flanking the gap, the terminals of the stone bank expand in width. The enclosing stone bank is irregular in width and broadly slumped, especially on the external face where it is enhanced by a natural fall of ground. The interior area appears slightly dished in profile. There is a small heap of loose stones in the W half. Low scarps or remnants field boundaries border the E, S and W sides of the feature. The nature of this monument is uncertain; it may be a house site. Alternatively, it could be the remains of a vernacular structure, such as a lime kiln, or even just the result of quarrying. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 January 2021 - MA062-118003: Mound, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA062-118003-. In pasture, located on a low rise, within a field system (MA062-118001-). A grass-covered, roughly circular mound (14m N-S; 11.5m E-W; H 0.85m at N, 1.1m at S) with a flattened, slightly concave top (diam. 4-5m). The nature of the mound -whether it is constructed primarily of earth or stone- is uncertain. It is markedly larger and more regular in appearance that field clearance cairns that dot the surrounding fields. An ephemeral linear feature traverses the mound on an E-W axis. Remnants of field boundaries clip the base of the mound at W and N and a grassed-over trackway (Wth 4-7m), flanked by a sod-covered stones, skirts the S side. An enclosure (MA062-0126----) is located c. 100m to SE, and a possible cashel (MA062-119----) c. 125m to SW. In gently undulating, rough stony pasture, located on the W bank of a shallow stream. The enclosure is located c. 100m N of a bend in the stream, where the course of the stream changes its direction of flow from W to N. There are good views to N along the course of the stream. A small turlough is located immediately to SW; this is named Stripe Lough on the 1837 OS 6-inch map but is not shown on the 1919 edition. There is a ridge of rough, heather-covered pasture c. 150m to S, now largely quarried out by a commercial quarry operation. A roughly D-shaped area (58m NNE–SSW; 36m WNW–ESE) defined on the curving side SWW−NNE by a scarp (H 1.45m at NW), which retains a slight stony internal rim (Wth c. 2m), outside which is a fosse (Wth 3m), with an external bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 0.5m) of earth and stone. On the straight side to E the enclosure is defined by the shallow gully of the N-flowing stream; here the interior of the enclosure simply drops gently to the stream bed. The opposite/E side of the stream is bordered by an earth and stone field bank which follows the course of the stream for some distance, extending beyond the enclosure. This field bank is low and slight along its length, but is somewhat more substantial (Wth 2m; H 0.5m) where it flanks the enclosure. Roughly mid-way along the W side of the enclosure there is a low section (L c. 4m) of scarp and a corresponding break (W 3.4m) in the outer bank, possibly indicating an original entrance. There are eroded breaks in the scarp and outer bank at NNE and at S. The W half of the interior is level, but from E of centre there is a gentle slope down towards the stream. In the centre of the interior there is a largely sod-covered, roughly oval heap of stones (7m N–S; 4.7m E–W; H 0.6m), most likely a field clearance heap. At S a portion (7.5m N–S; 12m E–W; D 1.7m) of the scarp and interior has been quarried out. Later field banks merge with the external bank at N and WNW. Grass cover, with a few hawthorn bushes along the perimeter. This is an unusual enclosure, and its date and function are uncertain. The relatively substantial enclosing elements on the curving W half contrast markedly with the shallow, easily forded stream and insubstantial bank that define the straight E side; it is possible that the enclosure had a different, more substantial enclosing element on the E side in the past, but if so, there is no trace of it now. In a valley, located to S of a NW-flowing stream. This record was listed in the 1991 SMR (1991) and RMP (1997) as a fulacht fia on the basis of information from a local source. Inspected in 1997, no visible remains of a fulacht fia were found; the location had been greatly disturbed by works associated with an extensive commercial quarry. If a fulacht fia existed here, it is likely that it has been destroyed.
