This previously unrecorded fort lies on a peninsula immediately to the S of a nearby fortified headland (MA009-003001-) in an area of flat sheep grazing along the western shore of the Mullet peninsula. The promontory fort is overlooked by higher ground inland. A long rectangular W-facing promontory measuring 34m long by only 7m across is cut off from the mainland by a fosse with slight indications of a stone wall outside it. The fosse measures 3m wide and 60cms deep. Regular uprights standing in the ground 4m outside the fosse may be the remains of a stone wall running across the neck of the headland. There is no trace of an entrance. The flat interior is featureless and rocks thrown up from the sea are strewn about. A recently exposed section through the defences along the southern cliff face shows that the fosse was up to 1.5m deep and may have been partly rock-cut. To the SW there is another promontory forts (MA009-005001-) and a number of hut sites (MA009-005005-, MA009-005006-, MA009-005011-). These descriptions are derived from the MA thesis of Markus Casey 1999 The coastal promontory forts of Ireland. A survey of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare. Unpublished MA thesis, National University of Ireland, Galway. Date of upload: 5 December 2018 - MA009-005001: Promontory fort - coastal, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA009-005001-. This site lies along the lowlying western shore of the Mullet peninsula in an area of sheep grazing. Rocks thrown up from the sea lie about the immediate area and in the interior of the fort. The promontory fort is covered with old cultivation ridges. The sea is easily accessible from within the fort. Named 'Portnafrankagh' by Westropp. The enormous W-facing headland, an estimated 24 hectares in size, is defended by a curved wall running across its neck. The wall is collapsed and grassed-over, it is 170m long and was originally 1.7m wide. It is 1m high inside and 1.6m high outside and has faint traces of an inner and outer ditch. It is best preserved near the centre, deteriorating at either end. There is no original entrance surviving. The interior of the fort measures circa 600m long and circa 400m wide at its widest point. Near the eastern end traces of four hutsites (MA009-005006-, MA009-005008-, MA009-005010- and MA009-005011-) and two souterrains can be seen. The huts are 3m-4m in diameter and were sub-circular in plan. They survive only as grassed-over collapsed walls of rubble. Two lengths of collapsed souterrain lie nearby. The depressions are 0.5m to 1m deep and 0.5m wide. The walls are intermittently visible and were of drystone construction. These features are nearly totally grown over, and the cultivation of the interior of the fort probably hastened their erosion. No other features are visible within the site. Several earth and stone banks run eastwards from the wall outside the site, but their relationship with the fort is not clear. The poorly preserved internal features of the site contrast sharply with Westropp's description of souterrain with passages and chambers, huts with enclosing walls and lintelled gateways through the main rampart (1912a,210; 1912b,12). These descriptions are derived from the MA thesis of Markus Casey 1999 The coastal promontory forts of Ireland. A survey of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare. Located on elevated ground, densely covered in graves, in a graveyard (MA009-007002-). This is the approximate location of a church, which is indicated on the 1838 and 1921 OS 6-inch maps as 'Church' and 'Church (in Ruins)', respectively, and which according to tradition stood at the highest point of the graveyard. There are now no visible remains of the church, but remnants were still visible in the late 19th century, when Westropp (1912, 211-212) noted that ‘Parts of the half-levelled north wall of the church, 3 feet to 5 feet high, remain on a sandy hillock; some blocks of a late fifteenth-century window, with an ogee head [MA009-007003-] and fragments of two (or three) stoups, or basins [MA009-007004-], lie among the graves.’ Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 12 September 2017 - MA009-007002: Graveyard, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA009-007002-. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
