In pasture, prominently sited on the flat summit of a steep-sided gravel knoll, with panoramic views in all directions, to S over undulating grassland and to N and NE over flat expanses of bog. Raised oval area (44.3m NE-SW; 28.6m NW-SE) defined by a scarp (Wth slope 3.8m at NNW, 3.4m at S; H 1.85m at NNW, 1.6m at S), poorly defined on the E side. The rath occupies almost the entire available space on the hill summit, leaving only a narrow rim of ground that forms a berm or terrace (Wth 2m) at the base of the enclosing scarp. From the edge of this terrace the sides of the knoll fall away abruptly and steeply, steepest on the SW−W side. The terrace is most clearly defined on the N and S sides of the rath; at ESE-SE it appears to have been partly quarried out in the past. A field fence, on a roughly N-S axis, traverses the W slope of the knoll and truncates or merges with the rath scarp at SW−W; the outer terrace is not evident here. The W half of the interior is level, with an uneven surface; slight linear features on a NNE−SSW axis may be remnants of cultivation ridges. There is a marked slope down from centre to the ESE-SE towards the enclosing scarp. The entrance is at the ENE, where there is a ramp-like slope merging with the knoll slope; the lower portion has been quarried away. According to local tradition, there was ‘stone table at the top of the fort’; it is uncertain what this was, but no stone feature is now evident. The interior is grassy, with hazel and hawthorn on the perimeter at E−SE and gorse at SW−W. In a thicket of overgrowth, located on top of a hill, which provides good views over the surrounding sharply undulating terrain, with a broad expanse of bog to E. There is a stream on the margins of the bog c. 100m to E. Roughly circular area (diam. c. 25m) defined on the NE arc by a stony, gravelly bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 1.1m), reduced elsewhere to a low stony rise (Wth 2m). Outside the stone bank at N−SSE there is a drystone field wall (H 1m) that respects the curve of the enclosure. The intervening gap (Wth 2m) between the field wall and the rath was used as a trackway or road, which originally continued beyond the rath to the NW and S, and is shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map. The trackway is no longer extant to NW and S of the rath. The rath interior appears to be level. It is obscured by impenetrable blackthorn and brambles. Hawthorn rings the perimeter. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 January 2021 - MA062-137: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA062-137----. In pasture, located on top of a rise, with good views. There is a stream c. 50m to E and another stream 150m to SW. This rath has been damaged. The remains consist of a roughly semi-circular, raised area (c. 29m NW-SE; c. 22m NE-SW) defined on the curving side SSE−NW by an earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.4m) with an external fosse (Wth 2-2.5m; ext. D 0.4m). The bank is very low internally but has a well defined external slope. The fosse is evident as a shallow depression, which becomes wider (W 3.5m) and less clearly defined at NW. At NNW−E the fosse, bank and part of the interior have been quarried away, and a road now borders this side of the rath. A straight field fence, on NNW-SSE axis, truncated the E side of the rath. There is a barely discernible linear rise (Wth 3m) outside the fosse at NW; this may be an external bank or simply a levelled field fence. The rath perimeter is ringed with dense brambles and gorse. In pasture, located at the base of a NE-facing slope, adjacent to a stream/drain at the edge of an expanse of bog which extends to NE−E. A low sod-covered, D-shaped rise (11.8m NE-SW; 11m NW-SE; H c. 0.6m) cut on the straight side to NE by a field drain (Wth 1.4m; D 0.6m). A layer (D 0.4m) of heat-shattered angular sandstone fragments in a matrix of charcoal-rich soil is visible in section in both sides of the drain. A hawthorn tree grows on the mound. A ringfort (MA062-136----) is located c. 100m to WSW. In pasture, located on the top of a ridge, affording good views in all directions over the surrounding undulating grassland. This possible rath, known locally as a ‘fort’, is not shown on OS 6-inch maps. It is poorly preserved. The remains consist of a roughly ovoid area (c. 26m NE-SW, c. 22n NW-SE) defined by remnants of a scarp. The scarp (H 0.6m) is best preserved at WSW−NW, merging at NW−N with the ridge slope. It is truncated at E−ESE by a straight field fence/scarp on a NW−SE axis. Remnants of a low curving scarp are also be traced E−ESE, petering out at SE, where the enclosure merges seamlessly with the natural ridge slope. A field wall skirts the base of the slope. Prominent cultivation ridges, on a NNW-SSE axis, traverse the E half of the interior. An L-shaped trench or depression (Wth 2.5m at top, 1.2m at base; D 0.4m) extends from the ridge slope at S through the interior for 10m to N, and then turns to ENE for 3m where it peters out; this appears to cut through the cultivation ridges, which suggests it is the result of relatively recent disturbance.
