Located on top of a knoll, in rolling pasture dotted with small drumlin-like knolls. Named ‘Knockmore’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps, and shown on the 1922 edition as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 10m). It appears to have been located on the top of a large knoll with a flattish top (c. 16-18m E-W; 10-12m N-S), but no trace of an enclosure is now evident. A similar enclosure (MA015-040----) is located 80m to NW. In pasture, located adjacent to the N boundary of the townland, straddling a rise in rolling terrain dotted with drumlin-like knolls. This rath is named ‘Knockmore Fort’ on the on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a broadly oval area (46m N–S; c. 49m E–W) defined SE–N by a substantial earthen bank (Wth c. 4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 2m, at NW), which has been levelled at NNE–ESE to a low undulation. On the W arc, the bank has been incorporated into the line of a later N–S field fence. Outside the bank at SSW and NW traces of a fosse (Wth c. 3.5m) with discrete remnants of an external bank (Wth c. 2.6m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.4m, at NW) can be seen. The interior is partitioned roughly centrally by a scarp on a roughly N–S axis; this coincides with a marked drop of over 1m in ground level between the higher W half and the lower E half. Hawthorn grows on the perimeter at W and N. There is another rath (MA015-043) located 165m to SE. In pasture, on a rise in rolling terrain dotted with drumlin-like knolls. There are good views, particularly to W. Raised circular area (22m E–W; 23m N–S) defined at NE–SE by remnants of a bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.8m at E), reduced elsewhere to a scarp (H 1.5m at S, 0.8m at W), and enclosed by a fosse (2-2.4m at W) and at SE–N by an external bank (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.7m). At N and NE–E the external bank has been truncated by two intersecting field fences on E–W and N–S axes. A short length of the external bank has also been truncated at SSW by a quarry pit (diam. 8m). The centre of the interior appears very slightly higher tha, with a slight slope down from there to S. Blackthorn, hawthorn and brambles grow around the perimeter. There is a rath (MA015-042----) 165m to NW, and there is a cluster of raths, enclosures, possible barrows and a wedge tomb (MA015-044001- to MA015-044006-) c. 160m to SE. Located in an area of rolling average pasture dotted with drumlin-like knolls and hummocks, with good views generally, especially SE–SW. The rath is situated on a low, natural rise. Field boundaries to E and SE shown on the 1922 OS 6-inch map were removed during land reclamation to create one large open field. Raised circular area (diam. c. 20m) defined by the remnants of an earthen bank, largely reduced to a scarp (Wth slope c. 2.3m; ext. H 1.3m). The enclosure is in poor condition, obscured by heaps of field clearance debris and engulfed in overgrowth, making examination difficult. This is one monument in a cluster, which includes: two enclosures (MA015-044002-; MA015-044003-) c. 100-150m to ENE; two possible barrows (MA015-044005-; MA015-044006-) c. 70m to SE, a wedge tomb (MA015-044007-) c. 100m to ENE, and a rath (MA015-044004-) c. 200m to SE. In pasture, located on a rise in an area of undulating terrain. Ground rises gradually to NW−N, and falls away to SE to an area of level damp pasture. Raised oval area (c. 22m E−W; c. 21m N−S) defined by remnants of an earthen bank. The bank (Wth c. 4m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.3m) is best preserved on the SW arc, but is reduced to a scarp elsewhere. The scarp is most pronounced, with a broad external slump (H 2.2; Wth 4.6m) at S−SW. A low stony rise (Wth 2-2.4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.6-0.9m) lies 4m outside the bank at SW; A low stony rise (Wth 2-2.4m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.6-0.9m) describes a shallow arc 4m outside the bank at SW; it appears to consist mainly of a heap of stones, but may represent the remnants of an external bank. The original entrance may be at ENE where there is a sloping gap (Wth 3.6m) in the scarp. There is another low area/break (Wth 2.4m) at NW. There appears to be a slight scarp or change in level in the SE quadrant of the interior, but this is obscured by overgrowth and impossible to inspect fully. The perimeter is densely ringed by brambles, clumps of which also encroach on the interior. In pasture, prominently sited on the broad, level top of a knoll, with panoramic views over the surrounding undulating grassland. It is located in the SW of Townplots West townland, close to the boundary junction with two other townlands, Rathowen East and Castlereagh. This rath is named ‘Rathlowagh’ on the 1838 and 1929 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a raised circular area (int. diam. 18.8m E–W; 20m N–S) defined by an earthen bank, and enclosed by a fosse and external bank. The inner bank (Wth 5m at NE, 5.9m at SW; int. H 0.4m at NE, 0.25m at SW; ext. H 2.6m at NE, 2.8m at SW) is low internally, but has a pronounced, broadly slumped external slope. Cockle shells were visible in the earthen makeup of the inner bank, c. 1m below the top on its external face, just to N of the entrance. The fosse (Wth 3m at NE, 2.8m at SW) and external bank (Wth 3.6m at NE, 3.1m at SW; int. H 0.35m at NE, 0.45m at SW; ext. H 0.7m at NE, 0.6m at SW) are well preserved at N and S but less clearly defined elsewhere. At W, the fosse is evident as a terrace scarped into the knoll slope. At SW–N the enclosing elements are enhanced by the naturally steep slope of the knoll. At NE-SE the slope is more gradual, and the entrance is located on this side. It consists of a gap (Wth 2.7m) in the inner bank at E, with a ramp-like causeway across the fosse, leading to an area of fairly level ground which extends eastwards from the rath. There is an L-Shaped linear sunken feature in the S half of the interior, which may represents a robbed-out souterrain (MA022-003001-). The interior is grassy, with some blackthorn encroachment at S; hawthorn, blackthorn and brambles ring the perimeter. There is an enclosure (MA022-004----) c. 30m to S, a rath (MA022-005----) c. 100m to SE, a rath (MA022-002----) c. 150m to WSW, and an enclosure (MA022-001----) is visible in the distance c. 300m to NW. There is an L-Shaped linear sunken feature in the S half of the interior. This is evident immediately inside the entrance gap as a subrectangular depression (c. 5m N−S; 4.4m E–W), which narrows at its S end (Wth 2-3m; D 0.3-0.6m), from where it extends to W across almost the full E-W width of the rath interior. It is possible that this represents a robbed out souterrain (MA022-003001-), or it could simply be the result of relatively recent quarrying/disturbance. H 1.35m at SE, 0.3m at W). A quarry pit (diam. c. 10m), which is cut into the hill slope, truncates the bank at NNW–N. The function of this small enclosure is uncertain. It might, for instance, be the remains of a circular house, perhaps associated with a a rath (MA022-003----), which is located 30m upslope on the same ridge. There is another rath (MA022-005----) 90m to SE, and a third rath (MA022-002) is located 145m to WNW. In pasture, located on a low rise in undulating terrain, with good views. It is located in the SW of Townplots West townland, close to the boundary junction with two other townlands, Rathowen East and Castlereagh. Raised circular area (23.5m N–S; 24.5m E–W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.1m, at NNW), and enclosed by a fosse (Wth 2m) and at S–NE by an external bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.4m). At NE-E the fosse is visible as a slight depression and is barely discernible at E-SE. The original entrance may have been at the E; there is no clearly defined gap in the inner bank, but there is a hint of a causeway (Wth 2.5m) across the fosse. The interior has an uneven surface, dotted with many small, moss-covered hummocks. The NE quadrant appears to be slightly higher that the rest of the interior. At N–NE remnants of a field ditch (Wth 1.2m) with associated field bank (Wth 2.2m; H 0.45m) skirt the external bank. A rath (MA022-002----) is located 145m to W; there is an enclosure (MA022-004----) 90m to NW, a rath (MA022-003----) 100m to NNW, and another rath (MA022-002----) c. 250m to W. In an expanse of rolling average pasture, located on a low rise at the base of the NW side of a hillock, on top of which 50m to SW there is a mound (MA022-010----). The townland boundary cuts across the hillock on a NNE−SSW axis. The location is sheltered at SE-SW by an arc of gently rising ground. There are open views at W-NE. This rath is named ‘Crockbullock’ on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, and ‘Crockbulloge’ on the 1929 edition. It consists of a raised oval area (29.4m N-S; 34.7m E-W) defined by in at E and SW-S by an earthen bank (at E: Wth 4.7m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.4m), reduced elsewhere to a scarp (ext. H 2.2m at W). Stones protrude from the top and sides of the bank. At NNE-NE a section (L c. 12m) of the scarp has been levelled to a broad low slope. A fosse (Wth 2.5-3m) with an external bank (Wth 3-4m; int. H 0.7m) is evident outside the bank/scarp at W-NNE; both are relatively well defined at WNW-NNW, but at NNW-NNE the fosse can be traced only as a band of rushes and the outer bank as a slight rise. A quarry pit (diam. c. 8m) truncated the external face of the outer bank at W. The rath interior has a somewhat bowl-shaped profile, rising from a central dip toward the bank at E and W. The entrance gap (Wth 2m) is at the SE. Four grass-covered mounds (diam. c. 2m; H c. 0.45m) are located in the E half of the interior, most likely the result of field clearance. In the SE quadrant, adjacent to the entrance, is a possible subrectangular house (MA022-009001-), which abuts the inner face of the ringfort bank. Grass cover, with hawthorn and blackthorn growing on outer bank at NW. In the SE quadrant of a rath (MA022-009). This possible house consists of a low arc of stony bank (Wth 1.2m; H 0.3-0.4m) which enclosing a sub-rectangular space (c. 8m N-S; 5m E-W) against the inner face of the rath bank. A gap (Wth 2m) at the N end appears to mark an entrance. Enclosed within a small, walled enclosure in the centre of the town of Killala, crowning a low hill on the SW shores of Killala Bay. A cathedral (MA022-017003-) and a souterrain (MA022-017005-) are located within a graveyard (MA022-017010-) 65m to S. This round tower is a National Monument (no. 105) in state guardianship. It consists of a circular tower (diam. c. 5m; H c. 25m) constructed of coursed limestone blocks cut to the curve; it stands to its full height and has a conical cap. There is a plinth-like offset (Wth 0.08-0.15m; H 0.8-0.9m) of large stones at the base of the tower. The doorway (Wth 0.7m at base; H 1.7m) at SSE is at first floor level, 2.98m above the offset, and c. 3.8m above current ground level. Three blocks of pale brown sandstone form the round arch at top, but the rest of the doorway is constructed of limestone. Three square-headed windows light the upper storeys, at ENE just above the second floor, at SSE on the third floor, and at W on the fourth floor. The uppermost storey, just beneath the roof, has four window, facing NNE, ESE, SSW, WNW, all square-headed internally and angle-headed externally. There are offsets in the internal wall face, which once carried timber floors for each storey. (Barrow 1979, 157-9). The stone-built conical cap was reconstructed in the early1840’s, and a noticeable bulge in the external wall face, about mid-way up the tower on the SW side, appears also to be the result of repairs, possibly as a result of a lightning strike in the 19th century. The round tower is the principal visible remnant of an important monastic establishment, traditionally said to have been founded here by St. Patrick, who appointed St. Muiredach as the first bishop of Killala (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 85). Located on the SE side of Killala town. Named 'Tobernakill' on the 1838 and the 1929 OS 6-inch map, this well underlies the present-day roadside pavement, and is no longer visible. In 2013 the well was temporarily uncovered when a section of pavement was removed during archaeologically monitored (13E0433) works on the inner relief road. The upper section of the N half of the well was exposed, 0.4m below current street level. It was defined by a rectangular, mortared stone surround. The masonry and design of the well, which incorporated yellow brick and a metal outflow-pipe, appeared relatively modern (Zajac, S. http://www.excavations.ie: 2013:417 - Townplots West, Killala, Mayo). In Killala town, located in the SE quadrant of the graveyard (MA022-017010-) of the cathedral (MA022-017003-) and extending beneath the adjoining street at E. This is a multi-chambered souterrain of drystone construction with lintel roofing and earthen floors. The current access hole is in the base of a depression (diam. 4m; D 1m) encircled by a low concrete wall and wrought-iron railings. The access hole pierces the roof of a subcircular chamber; it is not the original entrance but the result of the partial collapse of the roof caused by grave digging in the 19th century (O’Hara and Westropp 1898, 291). The subcircular chamber (2.9m N–S; 2.6m E–W; H c. 1.8-2m) has corbelled, drystone walls rising to a domed roof, capped with a flat lintel slab. A recess (L 1.2m E–W; max. Wth 0.43m; H c. 0.6m), with drystone side walls and an earthen end wall, is built into the wall above floor level on the W side of the chamber. At floor level on the E side of the chamber, a lintelled opening (Wth 0.62m at base, 0.4m at top; H 0.98m) leads into a lintel-roofed passage (Wth c. 70m; H 0.8m) which extends to ENE for c. 6m, at which point it is blocked. A cross-slab (MA022-017009-), reused as a roof lintel, is located in this passage. There are two lintelled openings from the E–W passage, one in the N wall and one in the S wall. The opening in the S wall is located at a point 4m E of the subcircular chamber. It is covered by a large, purpose-shaped lintel, and accesses a low, narrow passage or creep (Wth 0.37m) which extends for at least 2m to S, but is now largely infilled with soil. This may be the original entrance passage to the souterrain. The opening in the N wall of the main E–W passage is located 2m E of the subcircular chamber. It accesses a short creep (L 1m N−S; Wth 0.6m; H 0.68m) which opens into the S end of a large, rectangular chamber (4.4m N−S; 2.1m E−W; H 1.5m). The walls of the chamber are vertical with large stone corbels protruding from the upper courses to support massive roof slabs. At the W end of the N wall, another short creep (0.7m N−S ; 0.5m E−W ; H 0.75m) leads N into the S end of a second rectangular chamber (4.85m N−S ; 1.8m E−W; H 1.75m), similar in construction, size and orientation to the first. There is a small recess in the W wall of this chamber. In the N wall, there is an alcove (1.95m N−S; 1m E−W; H 0.85m) located at a height of 1m above floor level. In the floor of the alcove, a square opening marks the location of what was originally a slab-covered, trapdoor entrance. It drops into a small, rectangular, chamber (1.45m N−S; 1.05m E−W; H 0.7m) concealed directly beneath the alcove. From the E wall of the concealed chamber, a short creep (0.65m E−W; 0.45m N−S) leads into the SW end of a third, large rectangular chamber (4m N−S; 1.65m E−W; H 1.55m), of similar construction to the other two. The souterrain is frequently flooded as a result of a constant seepage of ground water. The souterrain, the cross-slab (MA022-017009-) and the nearby round tower (MA022-017001-) provide the principal visible evidence for an important Early Medieval ecclesiastical settlement in Killala. Many of the measurements and morphological details in the above description are based on a survey and scale drawings of the souterrain completed in 1982 by Mr. Noel Dunne, archaeologist, assisted by Mr. Kevin Gilvarry. In a souterrain (MA022-017005-). This early medieval cross-slab was discovered in August 2015 during a photographic survey of the souterrain. The cross-slab (Wth 0.18-0.19m; T 0.1m) has been reused as a roof lintel, spanning an E–W drystone passage (Wth 0.55m; H 0.78m), with the ends of the stone concealed in the N and S side walls of the passage. The carving, of a stylized cross in false relief, is visible on the underside of the narrow lintel. The cross shaft (L 0.18m; Wth 0.004m at base, 0.0025-0.003m at top), outlined by a groove, pierces a circle (L 0.16m; Wth 0.14m), also outlined by a groove. The shaft extends roughly to the centre of the circle. Four linear grooves radiate from the top of the shaft, dividing the internal space of the circle into five equal-sized, triangular portions, which enclose the shaft like petals on a flower. A small, roughly circular depression or dimple is cut into the centre of each of the five triangular segments, and there are two similar dimples on the shaft, one at the top and one at the base. Two parallel grooves, set three centimetres apart, are just visible rising from the top of the circle, suggesting a continuation of the carving on that part of the slab now concealed within the N wall of the passage. The surface of the triangular segment on the upper west (or R-hand side if facing the carving) of the circle is damaged; perhaps the reason why the builders of the souterrain felt free to reuse the cross-slab in the construction of the passage. The total length of the cross is 0.24m (excluding the two vertical grooves at the top of the circle). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
