- MA072-056: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-056----. In pasture located on a rise, with very good views. There is a stream/drain 100m to W. Raised circular platform (20.6m N−S; 20.5m E−W) defined by an earthen bank, and enclosed by a fosse with an external bank. The inner bank has a low internal lip and a well defined external scarp; it is primarily earthen, with stones protruding in parts. The fosse is evident as a flat terrace cut into the hill slope, especially on the W half of the circuit. The outer bank has a low internal lip and a pronounced external slope, which is enhanced by the hill slope, especially on the W arc; it incorporates a lot of stone on the S arc, some of which may be the result of field clearance or other recent modifications of the rath. Part of the external face of the outer bank at NW has been quarried away, and a section at NE−SE has been levelled and replaced by a straight N−S field wall, part of a later system of field walls which enclose the rath at N, E and S. There are breaks in the external bank at SSW (Wth 3m) and ESE (Wth 4m); these were opened in the relatively recent past to allow the S arc of the fosse to be used as a farm track. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2m) in the inner bank at E, corresponding with raised area across the fosse which may be an original causeway (Wth 4m); no corresponding break in the external bank is evident as this section has been levelled. The interior is level. There is a slight, oblong grass-covered rise or mound (L 2.6m N−S; Wth 1m E; H 0.2m) in the N half, with a slight hollow immediately adjacent at W, and another smaller rise a few meters to W. A field wall, oriented ENE−WSW, crosses the S edge of the interior. Hawthorn bushes ring the perimeter. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 5 May 2021

In the NE corner of a pasture field bordered on the N by a road, located on a rise. This monument is probably a ringfort. It is one of two conjoined circular embanked enclosures shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; the second enclosure (MA072-078002) is appended to its E side. By the time of the 1930 map edition, it is depicted as a subrectangular field plot (23m N−S; 24m E−W) defined by field boundaries which retain a slight curve at S−W; the eastern enclosure (MA072-078002) is not shown on 1930 edition. It is also recorded in an aerial photograph (GSI M686 -7 Roll 217, pr. 37; SMR file). The outline of the enclosure can no longer be discerned at ground level. The enclosing element at SE-NW has been levelled. The N edge is clipped by the field wall flanking the E−W road. At E a property wall, oriented roughly N−S, has a slight curve reflecting the original E arc of the enclosure, and it overlies the original junction with the eastern enclosure (MA072-078002-). In pasture, located on a rise. A bungalow lies immediately to E. This monument, probably a ringfort, is depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch maps as the eastern of two conjoined circular embanked enclosures; the second enclosure (MA072-078001-) is appended to its W side. It is not shown on the 1930 6-inch edition. The remains consist of a slightly raised, roughly oval area (c. 21m N–S; 25.7m E–W) defined E−SE by a curving scarp (H 0.6m at ESE, 1.4m at S). A field wall/property boundary, on a N–S axis, overlies the W edge where it was conjoined with the second enclosure (MA072-078001-). At N–NE the enclosing element has been dug away. In pasture, located on a rise. There is an E−W road immediately to N. Roughly circular raised area (24.8m N−S; 26.9m E−W) defined by a scarp with remnants of wall footings (Wth 1.8-2m) on top and drystone facing (H 0.5m) on its external slope. At E−S the basal courses of the stone facing are intact, but at S−NW the stone facing is intermittent and partly obscured by overgrowth. A large boulder is incorporated into the scarp at S. At NNW−NNE the scarp is incorporated into a field wall (Wth 0.6m), bordering a road, which respects the curve of the enclosure. There is a low terrace (Wth 2m at E, 3.1m at S; H 0.3m at E, 1m at S) immediately outside the scarp at E−S. A field wall on a N−S axis cuts across the centre of the cashel. A series of irregular-shaped, surface hollows (total L 8m; max. Wth c. 2m) is evident immediately adjacent and parallel to the W side of this field wall. A portion the NE quadrant has been quarried away, and a small pit (2m N−S; 1m E−W; D 0.45m) has been dug into the NW quadrant. A farm track skirts around the E half of the cashel.
