Located in a level landscape on the NW bank of a canalised SW-NE section of the River Skane. Archaeological testing (04E1499) by R. Tobin on the line of a sewer-pipe identified three potential archaeological locations in Ballinter. This site is designated Ballinter 1 and was subsequently excavated (04E1462) by D. Fallon when it proved to be a spread of broken and burnt stone (dims 4.5m x 3m; max. D 0.14m) sealed by two layers of brown clays and organic silts from a shallow subrectangular trough (dims 1.5m x 0.7m; max. D 0.24m). This was just S of the burnt mound material and was filled with a dark brown organic silt with wood and charcoal inclusions. The only wood identified was blackberry/raspberry, but a sample of charcoal yielded a C14 date of 2870-2570 cal. BC. A sample of hazel charcoal from the mound yielded a C14 date of 1770-1620 cal. BC. Just SE of the trough was a thin spread (dims 2m x 0.85m) of ash on the fire-reddened subsoil. Two pieces of wood c. 3m E of the burnt mound and resting on the subsoil were separated by a brown organic sandy clay from a lens of ash and charcoal (dims 1.75m x 1.5m). (Fallon 2010, 10-12) - ME031-085: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME031-085----. Located in a level landscape on the W bank of a canalised section of the River Skane, on the broad curve where the river changes the direction of its flow from SE-NW to N and NE. Archaeological testing (04E1499) by R. Tobin on the line of a sewer-pipe identified three potential archaeological locations in Ballinter. This monument is designated Ballinter 2 but it was accidently truncated at its SW edge and only the wood-lined trough and part of the mound was subsequently excavated (04E1462) by D. Fallon. Three alluvial deposits pre-dated the burnt mound and one yielded 17 fragments of animal bone, two of them heat-scorched. The trough was a rectangular cut (dims 1.4m x 0.75m; D 0.3m) inserted through two of the alluvial layers into the underlying gravel. The primary fill was a grey plastic clay which may have formed a water-proof lining for the four badly decayed pieces of wood set into its upper surface. Two of the wood pieces were identified as alder roundwoods. Above the timber floor was a deposit of charcoal-rich soils with heat-shattered stones that melded into the burnt mound (surviving dims 5.5m NW-SE; 3.5m NE-SW; T 0.14m) that originally extended off to the SW. A sample of oak charcoal from this yielded a C14 date of 2620-2470 cal. BC. Located in a level landscape on the SW bank of a canalised SE-NW section of the River Skane before it enters the broad curve where it changes the direction of its flow to N and NE. Archaeological testing (04E1499) by R. Tobin on the line of a sewer-pipe identified three potential archaeological locations in Ballinter. This monument is designated Ballinter 3 and was subsequently only partially excavated (04E1462) by D. Fallon as both the primary trough and some of the mound extended off to the NE outside the leeway. An oblong cutting (Wth 1.9m; L 1.4m plus; D 0.8m) with straight sides and a fairly flat base was inserted through basal alluvial deposits. Its single fill was a dark grey/black charcoal-rich clay with heat-shattered stone, wood fragments and organic inclusions. A sample of ash from the wood at its base, probably from a lining of the trough, produced a C14 date of 1975-1890 cal. BC. This is thought to be the primary trough and there were two small fire-spots in its vicinity. The trough was sealed by a layer of silt that is interleaved with the bulk of the burnt mound (dims 10.3m NW-SE; 7m plus NE-SW; max. T 0.16m) consisting of burnt stone and dark grey silt that extends off to the NE. The silt layer might also separate the primary trough from a second oval trough (dims 1.9m x 1.17m; max. D 0.45m) with steep sides and a curving flat base that is situated c. 1m to the S. It had four timbers lining its base, one of which was identified as an alder plank. This floor was sealed with a thin layer of ash and charcoal beneath charcoal-rich clays and heat-shattered stone that melded into the bulk of the mound. A sample of elderberry seed from the trough produced a C14 date of 1760-1600 cal. BC. Detached six-bay two-storey over basement Palladian house, built c.1750. The central block is joined by straight arcades to four-bay two-storey wings that project beyond the house creating a courtyard. The courtyard before the house, is completed by the presence of quadrangle walls that project beyond the wings to the east and the west. These walls are terminated by gate piers of square plan surmounted by urns. The main block is built of coursed limestone. The entrance with block-and-start surrounds is reached by a flight of steps over a semi-basement. The tripartite doorcase with fanlight is crowned by an open pediment with a round-headed niche, flanked by Ionic columns, above to the first floor. The ground floor windows have block-and-start surrounds and stone sills which are linked by a string course and the first floor windows have architraves crowned by entablatures. All windows have flat-headed openings. The front façade (south) of the building is finished by a cornice, over which is the low hipped roof of natural slate and two rendered chimneystacks. The two-storey wings have corner quoins, heavy architraves to ground floor windows, plain windows to first floor and hipped roofs. The single-story linking arcades are built of ashlar limestone. A stable block and a variety of outbuildings to site. An icehouse is located to the southwest of the house along with the remains of a kitchen garden. The main entrance to the house is located to the south. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: About 1 in 10 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
