March 1963 human remains were discovered in digging the foundation trenches for a house (Feeley 2001, 30-2, No. 6). The field in which the burials occurred has a curvilinear boundary on its E side, and it is possible that this was the original boundary of a cemetery. A small excavation (E001128) was undertaken by E. Prendergast in 1963. Portions of a number of in situ burials were visible in the section faces of the foundation trenches. All of these burials were extended and aligned W-E. At least seven individuals, four males and three females were identified (Cahill & Sikora 2011, vol. 2, 385-387). Located on a fairly level landscape. This is depicted as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 20m) and described as a ‘Mound’ in gothic script on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is delineated as a small D-shaped hachured feature representing the W quadrant of a circle with connecting trenches on the straight NE and SE sides on the 1908 edition. This barrow is reduced to its W quadrant and in 1969 (SMR file) it was a grass-covered D-shaped mound (dims of base 17m NE-SW; 14.5m NW-SE; H 1m) with a ditch (Wth of top 8m) at NE and another (Wth of top 4m; D 1.8m at NW; 1m at SW) at SE where there was an outer bank (Wth 2m; ext. H 0.3m). Its visible profile had been removed by 2012 (OSAP). Located at the NE end of a slight NE-SW ridge in a gently undulating landscape. A souterrain came to light in the spring of 1986 as the result of ploughing, but it is now closed. It consists of a straight-sided and lintelled SE-NW passage (Wth 0.9m; L 2.3m) which is blocked at the SE end and widened (Wth 1.3m) towards the NW where there is a trapdoor (dims 1m x 1m) in the floor. This leads into a short SE-NW passage (Wth 1m; H 1m; L 2.3m) roofed with two large lintels which enters an oval or subtriangular beehive chamber (dims c. 2.5m N-S; c. 2.5m E-W; H 2.2m) that has a corbelled roof and a single large capstone. From this chamber a short passage (Wth 0.9-1.1m; H 1.1m; L 1.5m) extends SW and enters a circular beehive chamber (diam. 3.3m N-S; 3.3m E-W; H 2.3m). The capstone of this chamber is cracked and the entrance has a large lintel (Wth c. 1.2m; H c.0.4m) supported on jambs that have four stones each. The basal fill of the trough was a silty sand with burnt stone beneath the remains of a wooden plank. A covering of clay (T 0.08m) sealed the mound and formed the upper level of the trough. No artefacts were recovered. The fulacht fia (ME045-030----) is 43m to the NE. Located towards the top of a gentle N-facing slope. Archaeological testing (03E1354) by S. Halliday in Area 17 of the N2 Finglas to Ashbourne road and bypass (excavations.ie 2003:1362) recorded two ditches of a field system that was further excavated by D. Fallon between January and March 2004 under the same licence (excavations.ie 2004: 1178). The two primary ditches ran N-S (L 19.8m plus; max. Wth 2.4m; max. D 0.9m) and WNW-ESE (L 50m plus; max. Wth 2.4m; max. D 1m), and would have met off the excavated area to the S. A sample of ash charcoal from the primary fill of the latter ditch yielded a C14 date of 1030-1220 cal. AD. Seed grains from the fills intimate the proximity of grain processing, and pottery from the ditches suggests a thirteenth century date as does a silver penny of Edwards I dating from 1280-83 that was recovered from the topsoil. (Fallon 2009, 34-7) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 17 December 2021 - ME045-033001: Well, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME045-033001-. After the high medieval field ditches (ME045-033----) became largely silted, and probably sometime during the fourteenth century, four large pits were dug, the largest of which cut one of the silted ditches. The earliest pit (dims 5.5m x 3.06m; max. D 1.32m), filled with silts that produced a few sherds of Dublin-type fine ware, was cut on its N side by the largest pit (diam. 7m) that had steep sides (D 1.75m) except at SE where there was a gentler ramp. This pit was filled with silts that had a high organic content at the base where three stakes were secured with packing stones. A fragment of a wooden vessel in the form of a mether with only one surviving handle was recovered from the pit and produced a C14 date of 1270-1400 cal. AD. A radiocarbon date of 1420-1500 cal. AD was provided by a sample from a tertiary fill of this pit. Evidence of wheat, barley and oats was found as well as cattle, sheep and pig bones. The skeletal remains of a cat and at least one dog as well as owl bones were also recovered from upper fills. Another large pit (dims 6m x 3.5m; D 1.87m), 17m to the W had a flat bottom and was filled with silts that had a high organic content and produced medieval ceramics from the tertiary fills. An oval pit (dims 9.2m E-W; 2.3m N-S; max. D 1m) 13m further N had a single highly organic fill, produced one sherd of Leinster cooking ware, and yielded a C14 date of 1280-1400 cal. AD. These medieval waterholes had prehistoric predecessors (ME045-033005-) c. 30m to the N. (Fallon 2009, 40-44) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 17 December 2021 - ME045-033002: Field system, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME045-033002-. The high medieval field ditches (ME045-033----) were succeeded by late medieval or early modern fields of smaller dimensions (Wth c. 20-25m E-W) which were defined by now silted ditches that extended off to the S. A substantial E-W boundary ditch (L 64m plus; max. Wth 6m; max. D 1.5m) and its continuation to the E (L 23m plus; max. Wth 3.7m; D 1.5m) formed the N edge of the system that drained to the NW but extended E and W beyond the excavation limits. The ditches tended to be straight-sided and flat-bottomed with very sterile fills. Four slighter drains (Wth c. 2.7-3.4m; D 1.1-1.4m) with similar profiles and fills extend S from the E-W boundary ditch. They produced evidence of wheat, barley, oats, vetch, peas, and rye, as well as a wide variety of weeds and wild species such as elder, wild parsnip, blackberry, knotgrass, sedge, fat hen, buttercup and wild cherry. At the W edge of the excavated area two slighter open S-N drains (L 13-15m plus; Wth 1.14-2m; D 0.7-0.9m) flanked either side of a metaled surface (Wth 3m) which could be the surface of the S-N lane depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map. No dateable artefacts were recovered from the road or its gullies, although finds from the silts above it suggest that the road and the fields might have become defunct during the eighteenth century. A single sherd of North Devon gravel-tempered ware and the base of a glass bottle of early eighteenth century date were recovered from the primary and secondary fills of the large E-W boundary ditch, but they could be intrusive or evidence of a re-cut. The two corn-drying kilns (ME045-033003-) fit neatly into these fields and their late medieval dates suggest a similar origin for the fields. It is possible that the farmhouse c. 100m to the S, which is the focus of both the high medieval and the late medieval field systems and their associated activities, is the successor of a medieval one, perhaps one of the four houses recorded at Baltrasna in the Civil Survey (1654) (Simington 1940, 102). (Fallon 2009, 45-52) See the attached plan from Fallon (2009, fig. 18) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 20 December 2021 - ME045-033003: Kiln - corn-drying, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME045-033003-. After the silting of the original field drains (ME045-033----), large pits (ME045-033001-) were dug at one point, but further E two corn-drying kilns were established close together. A keyhole kiln (dims 3.47m x 1.98m; D 0.31m) with a large bowl (diam. 2m) at N had two charcoal-rich fills but no evidence of in situ burning. There was evidence of wheat, barley and oats, and a sherd of Frechen Stoneware in the secondary fill indicates a sixteenth or seventeenth century date, although this sherd might be intrusive from the topsoil. Just 8m to the W and in a separate early modern field (ME045-033002-), was a second kiln, an oval pit (dims 3.52m E-W; 0.9m N-S; D 0.4m) with a well-defined firing bowl and evidence of in situ firing at the E end. A shallow cut (diam. 0.9m; D 0.3m) with three fairly sterile fills was attached to the S edge of the pit at the centre, but a sample from an ash twig from this yielded a C14 date of 1490-1660 cal. AD. Each of the kilns had a small pit (dim. 0.4-0.9m; D 0.08m) c. 2-2.5m to the S. Located towards the top of a gentle N-facing slope. Archaeological testing (03E1354) by S. Halliday in Testing Area 18 of the N2 Finglas to Ashbourne road and bypass exposed an area of stone cobbling (excavations.ie 2003:1362) that was excavated by D. Fallon (excavations.ie 2004:1178) under the same licence between January and March 2004. The truncated remains of a stone platform (dims 5.87m E-W; 1.85m N-S) set in a shallow cut (D 0.3m) was recorded c. 2m N of a second floor (dims 2.5m NE-SW; 1.4m NW-SE) also set in a cut (D 0.25m). There was a stone-built box-drain (L 3m; Wth 0.3m; D 0.25m) running NE-SW 2.5m W of the smaller floor that drained S into a mapped field boundary. About 500 sherds of medieval pottery, including Leinster cooking ware and Dublin type wares, were recovered at what is probably a badly eroded house site, although there were no post-holes or hearths evident. Finer Dublin type wares suggests it dates to the thirteenth century. (Fallon 2009, 37-40) See the attached plan from Fallon (2009, fig. 16) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 17 December 2021 - ME045-033005: Well, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME045-033005-. Located towards the top of a gentle N-facing slope. Archaeological testing (03E1354) by S. Halliday in Area 17 of the N2 Finglas to Ashbourne road and bypass recorded two ditches of a field system of rectangular fields (excavations.ie 2003:1362) that were further excavated by D. Fallon under the same licence when earlier features came to light (excavations.ie 2004:1178). The earliest feature is a shallow pit (dims 1.3m x 0.8m; D 0.3m) filled with clays containing charcoal that produced a C14 date of 1260-930 cal. BC and burnt stone material. Three sherds from the same cordoned urn were recovered from this pit that was slightly cut by a larger subrectangular pit (dims 4.4m x 2.5m; D 1.4m) just to its S. This achieved its greatest depth at S with a gentle slope down from the N and was filled with silts or slumped material with some animal bone, and a piece of iron slag was in the top fill. A sample from a primary fill yielded a C14 date of 170 cal. BC – 90 cal. AD. It was probably a waterhole as was a larger pit (diam. 8.5m; D 1.5m) just to its W that had a gently sloping ramp down from the NE and was deepest at SW. A large post-hole or pit bottom (diam. 0.6m; D 0.3m) was present on the ramp. The pit was filled with slump material and silts with organic material, and a sample from the basal deposit yielded a C14 date of 410-200 cal. BC. Apart from the pottery sherds no artefacts were recovered.
