Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape. A penannular ring-ditch with pits to the W and E was identified at the W edge of the route of the M3 motorway in a gradiometer survey (00R0064) by GBS Prospection (2001, 9). This was confirmed in archaeological testing (04E0417) by J. Dempsey of Testing Area 3, Contract 2, prior to the construction of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie: 2004:1184) when the E part of the ring-ditch was sampled. The broad, flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 6.42m; D 0.59m) enclosed a circular area (int. diam. c. 17.65m; ext. dims c. 30m N-S) but it has a wide opening (Wth c. 18m) at W. Where excavated the fosse had been cut into bedrock and had four fills of clayey silts. Fragments of animal bone together with seven sherds of pottery including a rim-sherd of Beaker were recovered from an upper fill. The only internal feature was a spread (dims 0.97m x 0.71m plus) of clayey silt with burnt stone, flecks of charcoal and fragments of burnt and unburnt bone. An animal tooth from the same level as the Beaker sherd returned a modern date of 1770-1950 (BETA 226218), so the stratigraphy of the sampled ditch is contaminated (Rathbone 2009, 3). (Dempsey 2004, 13-15) See the attached plan from the gradiometer report by GBS Prospection (2009, fig. A53) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 20 April 2022 - ME038-068001: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME038-068001-. Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape. The penannular ring-ditch identified by GBS Prospection (2001, 9) was confirmed in archaeological testing (04E0417) by J. Dempsey when testing Testing Area 3, Contract 2, prior to the construction of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie: 2004:1184). The remaining area within the road corridor was completely excavated (E003062) by S. Rathbone as Berrilstown 1 in November 2006 (excavations.ie 2006:1510). Twenty six pits and a corn-drying kiln were excavated around the E edge of the ring-ditch, the pits being more dispersed with distance from the ring-ditch. Apart from two linear examples (dims 1.36m x 0.8m; D 0.19m: 1.5m x 0.42m; D 0.18m) the pits were circular and small (max. diam. 1m; max. D 0.36m). Fourteen of the pits had inclusions of charcoal or burnt bone, but cereal grains dominated by barley were recovered in only one pit. A fragment of metal slag was found in another, and the only artefact was a fragment of a lignite bracelet. Samples from three of the pits produced C14 determinations of 338 cal. BC to 2 cal. AD (BETA 246982), 386-183 cal. BC (BETA 246983), and 565-666 cal. AD (BETA 246984). The keyhole-shaped kiln (dims 3.8m E-W; 1.8m N-S; max. D 1.08m) was c. 6m NE of the ring-ditch. It had evidence of in situ burning and six fills of silty or sandy clay with charcoal and burnt stone and bone fragments. There were also barley grains, but no dating is available. Situated on a slight S-facing slope. This was first identified in archaeological testing (04E0417) by J. Dempsey of Testing Area 3, Contract 2, prior to the construction of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie: 2004:1184). It presented as a pit (diam. 1.48m E-W; 1.28m N-S; D 0.23m) filled with heat-shattered stones in a black matrix. It was completely excavated (E003063) as Berrilstown 2 by S. Rathbone in August 2006 (excavations.ie 2006:1511) when nine small pits (dims 0.97m x 0.9m; D 0.17m to 1.8m x 1.2m; D 0.3m) were uncovered in a NW-SE line (L c. 20m), although none of the pits could be positively identified as a trough. Three of the pits contained some burnt stone material but charcoal was present in all. Only one had some bone and this also had small quantities of barley grain and a piece of flint debitage. Charcoal from this pit produced a C14 date of 2285-2030 cal. BC (BETA 246985). One post-hole and a few stake-holes were also present. An E-W drainage ditch with medieval ceramics in its upper fill crossed the area, and three pieces of flint and a quartz core were recovered in the topsoil.
