Situated on a bluff on the N bank of a NW-SE section of the River Boyne as it flows through Trim town, with the river c. 50m to the SW. The house was reputedly built in the early fifteenth century by Sir John Talbot, who was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland almost continuously 1414-19, and in 1425, and again in 1446-7. He also played a valiant role in the Hundred Years War, which earned him a walk-on part in Shakespeare’s King Henry VI (part 1) as the first Earl of Shrewsbury, which Talbot became in 1442. The house is a ten-bay, two storey over basement structure of the fifteenth century. The house is still occupied and not available for inspection, but a description is available (Potterton 2005, 204-08). The original windows are two-light cinquefoils, but most of the windows towards the E end of the building are of a pointed neo-gothic type, and an attic was added to the W end of the building. A tower projecting N at the W end could have served to house the entrance and services such as stairs and garderobes. Although there is no direct documentary connection with the house Sir John and his brothers, Thomas who summoned a parliament to Trim in 1418, and Richard, archbishop of Dublin, did resort to Trim quite frequently, and Sir John also summoned a Parliament to Trim in 1446. An armorial plaque on the exterior of the N wall displays the arms of Talbot quartered with those of Furnival, John’s first wife who died in 1422, and this clinches the connection. The crest is supported by two talbots, a type of hunting dog now extinct and associated heraldically with the Talbot family. The house is sometimes regarded as part of the buildings of St Mary’s abbey, which is unlikely despite the proximity. However, it may have become a diocesan school, which is attested in Trim in 1567 and continued into the eighteenth century. The school counts Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852) of Dangan Castle (ME042-009----), the future victor of Waterloo (1815) and the first Duke of Wellington, amongst its alumni. Another graduate is Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805-65), the mathematician and scientist whose work on optics and mechanics is still relevant today (Boylan 1978, 134; Ó Cairbre 2000; McCormack 2014). Located on a shelf of high ground within Trim town with a NW-SE section of the River Boyne c. 80m to the S. Known as Nangle's Castle, this structure is immediately N of the N wall of St Mary's abbey (ME036-048021-) at its W end. It is described as Nangle’s Castle on the 1836 and 1912 editions of the OS 6-inch maps, but might have no connection with the Nangle family, who were part of the Norman settlement of Meath from the beginning. Hugh de Lacy granted the barony of Morgallion to Gilbert de Nangle, according to the ‘Song of Dermot and the Earl (Ll 3142-3) (Orpen 1892, 229). Around 1400 they styled themselves Barons of Navan, and the name appears on lists as Keepers of the Peace, or judges (Potterton 2005, 377-80). This is a rectangular building (ext. dims 17.1m E-W; 7m N-S; int. dims c. 12m E-W; c. 5.5m N-S) but only the W and E walls survive partially to the first floor level (ibid. 208-10). The ground floor is featureless and there was no vaulting at this level. The first floor has the remains of a garderobe at the NE angle and a corbelled overhanging chamber at the SE angle, partly supported by the wall of a building to the E. A badly eroded stone head is protruding from the SW angle of the building. The possibility that this could be the remains of a building associated with the Augustinian Priory complex (ME036-048021-) should not be discounted. (Bradley and King 1985, 157-8) Archaeological testing has produced copious evidence of medieval settlement in the vicinity. House remains have been found in excavation on the riverside c. 40m to the SW (ME036-048030-) and c. 65m to the N (ME036-048035-). Archaeological deposits and pits were recorded c. 50m to the NW (Duffy 2009), and medieval and post-medieval structures (ME036-048035-) on High Street were c. 65m to the N. In 2008 a boundary wall just 60m to the NE and c. 30m N of the Yellow Steeple was removed without permission and the ground to the N in two burgage plots was lowered (D 0.7m at N to 1.3m at SE), exposing the soil around the new edges. Archaeological testing (C387, E004071) identified a foundation trench for the removed boundary wall, providing a nineteenth century date for the wall itself. Three pits filled with loose soil and animal bones were recorded in the E profile as well as a possible ditch (Wth of top c. 6m). The bases of some pits were recorded in the central area but no dating evidence was recovered from them. The ditch seen in the E section could not be confirmed crossing the central area, and the boundary between the two plots did not survive. The base of three trenches (Wth c. 3m; D 0.1m) and a section of a N-S ditch (Wth 2m) were also encountered but no dating evidence for any of these features was forthcoming. Situated on a SW-facing slope on the NE bank of the River Boyne, which is c. 40m distant. The town wall of Trim had a circuit of almost 2km with five gateways, but only this gate known as ‘Sheep Gate’ between the Augustinian abbey and the Porch Field, which the abbey owned in 1540 (White 1943, 303), survives. This is a rectangular masonry block (dims 8.45m NNE-SSW; 2.8-3.5m WNW-ESE; H c. 3m) with an entrance passage towards its N end. There are round arches over the inner (W: Wth 3.23m; H 3.8m) and outer (E: Wth 2.7m; H 3.3m) facades of the entrance passage, with draw-bar sockets at ground level inside the E arch only. The N wall of the entrance passage has a blocked doorway leading to a newel stairs to an upper level, while a short segmental arched passage on the S side leads to a now blocked doorway in the S wall giving access from the Porch field to the town when the main gate was closed. Archaeological monitoring (E003644) of new paths in the vicinity during 2007 produced no related material (Seaver 2010). This is a National Monument in state ownership, No. 469. Situated on a slight W-facing slope of a rise on the N bank of the River Boyne with a NW-SE section of the river c. 100m to the SW. St Mary's Augustinian Abbey has been thoroughly described (Potterton 2005, 294-318), and this is summarised here. The Yellow Steeple is a national monument and it can be accessed on foot from High St. to the W by Abbey Lane, or across a footbridge from a carpark at Frenche's Lane beside the castle (ME036-048004-). (Harbison 1970, 198) The abbey was probably established before the 1140s when it adopted the rule of Arrouaise (Hadcock 1964, 125). In any case it was re-dedicated by Hugh de Lacy before 1186. Many of the abbots are known from the middle of the 14th century onwards (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 195-6). St Mary’s was burned in 1368 and the present structure may have been built after that catastrophe. The church had a fabulous statue of the Blessed Virgin from the late 14th century at least, which was greatly venerated. Miracles were recorded through its intercession, but it was despoiled at the first opportunity by the reformers c. 1538 (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 299-302; Potterton 2005, 306-10). However, the image may have survived until 1641 (MacLeod 1947, 54). The abbey was suppressed in 1539 and an extent of 1540 declared the church to be parochial and apparently intact (White 1943, 302-03). The buildings were still intact in 1565 when ‘the church, bell tower, cemetery, cloister, and dormitory’ are mentioned, but only the tower seems to have survived a siege in 1649 (Potterton 2005, 305-6). At the Suppression the abbey had 100 acres of demesne in the Porch Field just to the E, which is still an open park at the centre of the expanding town of Trim. It owned two watermills on the river and 60 tenements in and around the town. Further afield it had 140 acres at Ladyrath in Rathkenny parish; 140 acres at the Grange of Trim, in Scurlockstown parish; 147 acres in Creroge; 32 in Rathnally; 84 in Freffans; 46 in Ardgreagh; 66 in Chanonton (Shanlothe?); 10 in Stonehall; and smaller holdings in other unidentified locations making a total of over 800 acres. It also held the churches of Kildalkey and Clonard (White 1943, 303-05). By 1542 most of this property was let to Sir Anthony St Ledger, who served as Lord Deputy three times in the period 1540-1556, and by the early 17th century much of it was granted to Sir Thomas Ashe, who is commemorated in a graveslab (ME036-048070-) at St Patrick's church. By the late 18th century the church was reduced to what remains today and had acquired the name ‘Yellow Steeple’. (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 298-305) Only the E wall and part of the S wall of the church tower (int. dims 6.6m WNW-ESE; 5.55m NNE-SSW; ext. dims c. 10m WNW-ESE; c. 11.3m NNE-SSW) survive to seven storeys and the parapet, with attached towers at each corner. Each floor above the first is recessed internally on the E and W walls to provide a purchase for the floor above and to lessen the weight of the walls. The tower is composed almost entirely of a white limestone with a fine finish. There are five external string-courses, the walls being recessed above each on all the walls. Butler writing in 1854, quoted by Cogan (ibid. 305), says the tower is ‘125 feet high (c. 38m)’, which makes it probably the tallest and finest surviving medieval church tower in the country. The reconstructed doorway on the S side has re-used the head of a twin-light ogee-headed window and this doorway communicated with the church, which was to the S and has been completely removed, by a passage (L 3.6m) through the S wall. There is a long peep-hole or hagioscope through the S wall, which emerges on the S face of the wall in an arched recess for an ornate canopied tomb, but no dressed stone from it survives. This suggests that the tower stands on the N side of the chancel. The E-W vault over the ground floor of the tower is destroyed, but the SW turret contains a newel stairs to the upper floors, which is permanently locked. A doorway at S from the stairs led to a rood loft. The first floor has a single ogee-headed light under a square hood-moulding in the E wall. At the second floor there is an ogee-headed light in the E wall and a small rectangular doorway in the S wall. This provided access to the wall walk of the church, and a gargoyle drains to the E. The third floor has a plain light in the S wall. The fourth floor has an ogee-headed light on the S wall and lintelled doorways to chambers, probably garderobes or newel stairs, in the NE and SE turrets. The rib of an arch springs from the centre of the E wall but the vault does not survive. The fifth stage is the belfry stage and it has a large pointed opening in the E wall with a mullion and transom, which would be repeated on the other walls. There is a tall, narrow light over the belfry stage in the E wall at the sixth floor, and the N and S walls are corbelling in, probably to support the parapet which does not survive. However, turrets rise over the corners, that at the NE with a lintelled doorway. Situated on a level landscape on the N bank of the River Boyne, with a NW-SE section of the stream c. 500m to the SW. It was just outside the walls of Trim on the N side. A full record has been made (Potterton 2005, 318-31), of which this is a summary. The Dominican friary, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was founded in 1263 by Geoffrey de Geneville, who became a friar there in 1308 and was buried there in 1314 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 230). The Hussey family of Galtrim (ME043-002----) were generous benefactors and were frequently interred here but were not the founders. A synod of the Irish church was held there in 1291 (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 305-6), and Dominican chapters were held there in 1285, 1300 and 1315 (Conwell 1872-3, 388-90). Parliament even met here in 1446 and 1491 (Hennessy 2004, 10). In 1484 a legal case involving 70 acres adjoining the friary that had been granted by Richard, Duke of York, was settled to the friars' satisfaction (Potterton 2005, 323-4). The friary was than in decline and being dismantled even before the Suppression. An extent of 1540 suggests that the church, cloister, hall, kitchen, garden, the cemetery and an orchard, covering 4 acres in total, were already dilapidated or dismantled. The only land remaining were a close of 3 acres, 63 acres in the commonage of Trim, and 6 acres at Tyllaughard (Tullyard) (White 1943, 308-09). The land was acquired by Sir Thomas Cussack of Cushinstown and Lismullin, who was accumulating other monastic estates in Meath. The Dominicans remained in the vicinity of Trim and early in the 18th century they leased a farm at Donore (ME041-007----) where they continued a community life (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 307-10). (Fenning 1962) Something of the walls survived down to c. 1760, but Austin Cooper in 1795 could see only a few heaps of stone (Price 1942, 99). An undeveloped green area of about 5 acres (c. 2.2 ha) within the expanding town of Trim has some earthworks, including a double bank and intervening ditch forming the E and N sides of a square, probably enclosing the precinct, while smaller rectangular earthworks with masonry fragments mark the site of the buildings. Archaeological testing (E002398) at the W edge recovered burials and a well (Seaver 2011). Archaeological testing (E004129) beginning in 2010 as part of a research and training program, and guided by a resistivity survey identified the N wall of the church with ancillary walls (H 0.75-1.5m), but the associated deposits related largely to the destruction phases of the friary (O’Carroll 2013). Since then the annual, community-based excavation seasons, conducted by local people and students from around the world, have revealed much of the S range where the church is located, as well as the E range and the cloister N of the church (Mandal et al. 2015). The church (ext. dims 50m E-W; 8.5m N-S) was divided at the centre into an equally large nave (L 22m) and chancel by an inserted fourteenth – fifteenth century tower, the piers of which survive (H 1.5m). A S aisle and a side chapel were probably added at the same time. A doorway from the S aisle led to the medieval cemetery where burial continued in the post-abandonment period, especially for marginalised members of society, including infants. At least 148 burials have been recorded from the cemetery, or the church where the burial of privileged donors took place. The church would have been a magnificent structure, the walls being plastered inside and out, with painted bands of decoration on the inside. It was roofed with slates, and over 10,000 pieces of window glass has been recovered. The cloister garth or garden (dims c. 20m x c. 20m) was bordered by a wall supporting the arcade, with a path 8 feet (2.44m) wide around it. The arcade, dating to the late thirteenth century, was supported on pilasters of polished Purbeck marble from Dorset. The chapter house on the E side of the cloister was extended in the fourteenth century when a scriptorium was added to the N of it where a decorated book clasp, a bone pointer and other implements connected with writing were found. A second courtyard, as large as the cloister, was added to its N, and the area between these and the boundary of the friary precinct (ME036-048024-) to the E was divided into four plots defined by earthen banks. These were the vegetable gardens of the friary, and evidence of wheat, barley, oats, rye, beans, peas, wild mustard and weeds of cultivation have been found. An oval, earth-cut well (dims 1.42m; D 2.2m) containing silty sand that was closed with clay containing stone and slate was recorded in excavation (E002398). The skeletal remains of an adult male, who had suffered a traumatic death and can be dated to the 15th century, had slumped into the well through the collapse of its sides. Three other truncated inhumations were recorded in the vicinity. The Dominican friary (ME036-048022-) has some relict field banks attached to its precinct which are depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map. In the extent of the Friary at its Suppression in 1540 the site of the church and cloister are described with ‘an orchard, garden and cemetery’ covering about four acres, and ‘a close of pasture adjacent to the wall of the house’ containing about 3 acres (White 1940, 308-09). The surviving area of about 5 acres (c. 2 ha) around the friary is divided by an L-shaped boundary into two fields and forms a park within the town. The boundary separated the church precinct from other land and is best preserved at the E end of the N section where it consists of an inner earthen bank (Wth of base 7m; H at S 0.6m; ext. H 0.8m) at S separated by a fosse (Wth top 4.2m; Wth of base 1.5m; ext. D 0.9m at N) often retaining water, from an outer earthen bank (Wth of base 4m; ext. H 0.5m at N). Located on the broad plateau of the Porch Field. The shortest distance between the towns of Trim (ME036-048----) and Newtown Trim (ME036-049----) is along this route from the Sheep Gate (ME036-048011-) of Trim to the Augustinian priory (ME036-049003-) as was first recognised by Kelly (2005, 23-43), who quotes a grant from 1476 ‘of 15 acres of arable land lying between the road which goes from the Porch-gate of Trim to the Newtown’. The road is not clearly visible at the porch gate but c. 100m E of this it survives as a sunken hollow-way (Wth of top 5m; Wth of base 2m; D 0.2-0.5m) with hedge growth (L c. 300m) represented as a field bank on the OS 6-inch maps. On the E side of the Ring-road (R154) it is not immediately apparent but c. 100m from that road it emerges as a broad bank (Wth of base c. 6m; H 0.3m at N; H < 0.1m at S; L c. 200m) after which the hollow way (Wth of top 5m; Wth of base 2.7m; D 0.2-0.4m) resumes (L c. 300m) almost as far as the abbey. Located in fairly level pasture overlooking the N bank of the River Boyne between Trim and Newtown Trim. The porchfield of Trim which covers about 97 acres (c. 47 ha) was granted under that name by Richard Duke of York to St Mary’s Abbey (ME036-048021-) in 1449 (Kelly 2005, 23). Prior to that it could have been part of the demesne land of the castle (ME036-048004-), and Walter de Lacy in the earliest charter of Trim c. 1194 granted to the burgesses ’…that they may have pasture for their animals in my fallow lands…’ (ibid. 29). He also granted 3 acres to each burgess but if these plots were in the Porch field it would have resulted in a more chaotic system. In 1540 the porchfield was still amongst the abbey’s possessions and regarded as arable land (White 1943, 303). Kelly (2005, 30-1) has identified ridge and furrow of possible medieval date over much of the area that are 16.5 feet (5.5m) wide, this being one perch, a medieval measure. Today the porchfield is divided into east and west sections by the Ring-road (R154). The cultivation ridges are difficult to see on the ground but can be seen on OSI aerial images (2017), Digital Globe (c. 2013) and Google Earth (18/04/2009; 29/06/2018). The ridges are all on a N-S axis and are up to 200m long, which is equivalent to a furlong (220 yards), the length a team of oxen could plough without pause. The furrows seem to be confined within the few field banks depicted on the OS 6-inch maps and change direction slightly at these boundaries, but the S-curves characteristic of medieval ploughing are not apparent. There is a lynchet (L c. 700m) visible as a steeper scarp (Wth 3.8m; H 1-1.2m) on the S and SE-facing slope down to the N bank of the River Boyne. This is caused by soil creep from ploughing that accumulates at the bottom of the slope. The lynchet becomes less prominent as it proceeds NE towards Newtown. The ridges (Wth 3-4m; H 0.1m) and furrows (Wth 1.5-2m) are most visible at the N edge of the E field when the grass is cut. They could date to any time from the high Middle Ages up to the eighteenth century and perhaps later, and would be a natural development of soil-creep for as long as fixed mouldboards on ploughs were in use. The porch field has been in public ownership since 2002 and is the venue for many events including the Scurlockstown hay-making festival in June. Archaeological testing (08E0510) by M. Seaver on an area of the furrows on the E side of the ring-road produced conclusive proof of a post-medieval date in clay pipe stems and ceramics of 18th and 19th century date (excavations.ie 2008:991). Located on the N bank of the River Boyne at a point where it begins to change from a NW-SE direction to a WSW-ENE direction. A channel of the river (L c. 200m), no longer visible but depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map, cut off the bend of the river and created a little island which was accessed by this bridge. It is a single arch (Wth 4.7m; present H 2.6m; T 2.2m) of quarried limestone but neither outer face of the arch survives. The date is unknown, but the channel might have been cut to avoid weirs in the main river.
