Situated on a slight E-facing slope in a field that was known as ‘Boylan’s Garden’ or ‘The Meenauns’, it is one of the sources of the W-E Broad Meadow River that flows to the Irish Sea through Ratoath and Ashbourne. St Sechnall’s Well is mentioned by Isaac Butler (1892, 16-7) in 1749 when it was described as sulphurous and surrounded by trees. The OS Letters from the 1830s recorded that a whitethorn grew by the well but the patron had not been held within living memory (Herity 2001, 103). The patron, held on the Sunday following the saint’s feastday, the 27th November, had been revived by the 1920s when the whitethorn was still present at the edge of the well. There was a cure for swellings on any part of the body by the application of a poultice made from clay and the well water applied for nine days, but no offerings were left at the well. It consisted of an oval spread (dims 1.42m x 0.9m; max. T 0.2m) in a cut that was lined with a layer of dark brown silty clay with charcoal flecks and some heat-shattered stone. Above this was black silty clay with less stone and more charcoal. One feature was a shallow circular pit (diam. 0.66m; max. T 0.1m) with dark pink / red clay that was covered by brown clay. A second pit (dims 0.6m x 0.5m; D 0.05m) was 0.9m to the S and had a single fill of dark pink / red clay. There was no evidence of a connecting flue at this severely truncated kiln. It resolved into an oval area (dims 2.4m N-S; 0.52m E-W) consisting of two oval pits with charcoal-rich fills surrounded by a halo of oxidised clay. There was no evidence of a connecting flue at this severely truncated monument.
