Located on a hillock in a fairly level, low-lying landscape. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 32.5m E-W; 31.5m N-S) defined by a scarp (at N: Wth 1.5m; H 0.65m; at W: Wth 2.2m; H 0.75m). There is no visible fosse or entrance. It had become overgrown by 1995 (OSAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). A cross-slab which was found in the graveyard of Dulane church (ME011-037----) c. 1980 was moved to the locked sacristy of the Roman Catholic church of the Sacred Heart at Mullaghey, c. 1.25km to the SE, for safety. It is probably made from schist and was damaged at the top were it now comes to a rough point. The stone has a slight rebate at its left front edge. It has a perfectly executed latin cross (H 0.44m; span 0.3m) incised with double lines. It has expanded square terminals, a ring and hollow angles. There may be the beginning of a fret pattern at its base. Over the cross is the inscription: ÓR DO ANAM / CHAID – Pray for Anmchaid. Anmchaid is a name that occurs amongst the southern Uí Neill (pers. com. Con Manning, S Ó Riain). An Anmchaid or Anmchaidh occurs amongst the descendants of Niall Noígiallach (Niall of the Nine Hostages) within five generations (Ó Muraíle 2003, vol. 1, 381). However, that Amchaid would be too early to have had a cross-slab like this, which is probably ninth or tenth century in date. Located in a gently undulating landscape in the valley of the NW-SE River Blackwater, with a NW-SE section of the river c. 200m to the SW. Archaeological testing (04E0913) by J. Roynane (2005) at Testing Area 14 of Contract 4 of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie 2004:1345) identified archaeological material on the route of the N52 Kells link-road that was fully excavated (E003158) by P. Lynch (2010) in February - March 2007 as Cakestown Glebe 2 when 3325 square metres were opened. A ring-ditch, two hut-sites and a structure, together with evidence of Mesolithic habitation were recorded (excavations.ie 2007:1273). The upper levels of almost all features were cut by NE-SW post-medieval furrows. Situated at the W edge of the excavated area and c. 25m WSW of the closest structure (1) was a ring-ditch consisting of a circular area (int. diam. 12.5m; ext. diam. 16.5m) defined by a continuous round-bottomed ditch (Wth c. 2m; D 0.7-1m) with a basal fill of grey stony clay beneath a loose stony mix with pebbles and sand. There were no internal features but a small quantity of cremated bone was recovered from the ditch at E. The ditch also produced two small fragments of copper alloy and four pieces of flint. Amongst the charred plant remains hazel was dominant followed by prunus, and two samples of the latter provided C14 dates of 380-110 cal. BC (SUERC 29337) and 28-128 cal. AD (UBA 12069). Located in a gently undulating landscape in the valley of the NW-SE River Blackwater, with a NW-SE section of the river c. 200m to the SW. Archaeological testing (04E0913) by J. Roynane (2005) at Testing Area 14 of Contract 4 of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie 2004:1345) identified archaeological material on the route of the N52 Kells link-road that was fully excavated (E003158) by P. Lynch (2010) in February - March 2007 as Cakestown Glebe 2 when 3325 square metres were opened. A ring-ditch, two hut-sites and a structure, together with evidence of Mesolithic habitation were recorded (excavations.ie 2007:1273). The upper levels of almost all features were cut by NE-SW post-medieval furrows. This consists of an arc of stakeholes (diam. 3.5m) S-W-N that was open to the E, three hearths and several pits or postholes. It is located c. 6m W of Structure 2. An oval hearth (dims 1.6m x 0.9m; D 0.4m) is within the arc of stakes at NW where added stakeholes are present. The hearth had an uneven base and was filled with a loose grey/black silty sand. The second hearth (dims 1.1m x 0.75m; D 0.4m) had a charcoal enriched black and red clay, and would have been located outside a putative E edge of the structure where most of the six or so postholes or pits were located but no pattern was discerned amongst them. The third hearth (dims 0.63m x 0.38m; D 0.08m) was at the NE edge of the area, but oak appears to have been the principal fuel of the larger hearths. A sample of burnt bone from the largest hearth yielded a C14 date of 993-838 cal. BC (UBA 12942). A posthole just to its W provided a C14 date of 1122-939 ca. BC (UBA 12071). The largest pit (dims 3.1m NW-SE; 1.6m NE-SW; D 0.37m) at the N edge of the area was filled with a grey/brown sandy silt and produced a small stone with hollows like cup-marks and much of the pottery of a coarse Late Bronze Age domestic variety. The rest of the pottery was derived from a single vessel that was deposited in a posthole just S of the largest hearth and this posthole also provided fragments of a clay mould for a straight-sided blade. The area was covered by a layer of charcoal enriched silty clay (dims 8.2m x 7.5m; T 0.1m) from which most of the flint, consisting mostly of flakes and blades, was recovered. It consists of a concentration of postholes (diam. c. 5m) but its lay-out is not entirely clear as no slot-trench is present. However, there may have been an entrance (Wth 2m) at NE, inside which and within clearings of the postholes in the interior were two hearth deposits (dims 1.24m x 1.1m; D 0.08m: 1.4m x 1.02m; D 0.18m), both with associated stakeholes. Some Late Bronze Age domestic pottery was recovered from a small pit, and small quantities of calcined bone was retrieved from some of the postholes. A sample of hazel charcoal from a posthole provided a C14 date of 1251-1013 cal. BC (UBA 12072), which is an appropriate date but a sample hazel charcoal from another posthole provided a date of 5220-4990 cal. BC (SUERC 29339) and must have been contaminated with Mesolithic material in the area. This is Structure 3 and consists of a rectangular structure (dims 4.6m NW-SE; 4.4m NE-SW) defined by a line of three postholes on the SW side and four on the NE sides with a single posthole providing the E corner. The posts at the N and S angles are strengthened by single stakeholes, and it was probably a flat-roofed structure open on all sides. Oak was identified in one of the stakeholes and in one of the postholes, and a sample of oak sapwood from the posthole provided a C14 date of 2280-2020 cal. BC (SUERC 29338). (Lynch 2011, 6-7) A large pit (dims 2.45m x 1.7m; D 0.57) just SE of hut-site 1 might be contemporary with Structure 3. It had a lining of stones over much of its base but much of its fill was a loose brown silty sand that had a cremated burial inserted in it. Probably the complete remains of an individual of indeterminate age and sex were present and a sample returned a C14 date of 2141-1981 cal. BC (UBA 12943), but no pottery or other artefacts were present. A posthole and some stakeholes in the vicinity of the pit may have been relevant to the burial, but it is not known how long the pit had been closed before the burial was inserted. Located in a gently undulating landscape in the valley of the NW-SE River Blackwater, with a NW-SE section of the river c. 200m to the SW. Archaeological testing (04E0913) by J. Roynane (2005) at Testing Area 14 of Contract 4 of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie 2004:1345) identified archaeological material on the route of the N52 Kells link-road that was fully excavated (E003158) by P. Lynch (2010) in February - March 2007 as Cakestown Glebe 2 when 3325 square metres were opened. A ring-ditch, two hut-sites and a structure, together with evidence of Mesolithic habitation were recorded (excavations.ie 2007:1273). The upper levels of almost all features were cut by NE-SW post-medieval furrows. This was located at the SE edge of the excavation and consisted of two adjacent hearths (dims 1.38m x 0.88m; D 0.22m: dims 1.05m x 0.86m; D 0.15m), both with oxidised reddish brown clays in their fills indicating burning, and the smaller and more northerly of the two has four postholes associated with it that might have supported spits. A modified butt-trimmed flake, diagnostic of the Later Mesolithic, was recovered from the fill of the smaller hearth. A piece of oak charcoal from the larger hearth returned a C14 date of 4489-4356 cal. BC (UBA 12070), but old wood could be a factor here.
