Located in a slight fold on a W-facing slope. It is described (Eogan 1957) as an oval grass-covered mound (diam. 22m x c. 20.5m; H c. 0.6m) with some piles visible around the perimeter and a rough kerbing of large stones at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationary Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 10 July 2007 Amended: 2 August 2022 - ME012-006: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME012-006----. Situated at the summit of Carnacop Hill. A small rectangular enclosure is depicted on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is a raised circular and grass-covered feature (diam. of top 16.2m E-W; 16m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.6-0.7m). It is in the E corner of a raised grass-covered platform (dims c. 30m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW; H 1m) that is represented on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-in map. This is probably the site of an underground chamber or souterrain (ME012-006001-) discovered in 1805 (Reid 1823, 7-8 fn), of which there is no trace, and the enclosure could be the remains of a rath in which it was situated (Eogan 1957, 50). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Situated at the summit of Carnacop Hill. Reid (1823, 7-8fn) records the discovery in 1805 of a passage and beehive chamber 'close to a grassy hill or artificial construction’, perhaps the enclosure (ME012-006----), upon an eminence which overlooks the adjacent country. There is no evidence of an underground structure at the enclosure. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
