Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape, with the WNW-ESE Castle River c. 100m to the N. Following Hugh de Lacy’s grant of Dunboyne to William le Petit the latter established a ringwork castle (ME050-021007-), perhaps adapting an older rath, on the S side of the stream, but this would not suffice for very long and may have been rebuilt at some stage in stone. A stone castle was mandated in 1475-6 when Edward IV ‘Purposes by the grace of God to commence to erect a castle anew at Dunboyne’ to be completed in one year (Connolly 2002). This was probably a tower house and possibly located on a new site. One stone house owned by Lord Dunboyne is recorded in the Civil Survey (1654), and the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map depicts a two storey gabled and probably then roofless structure on the S bank of the stream. The present Dunboyne Castle was built by the tenth or eleventh Baron of Dunboyne in the 1770s or 1780s with further work conducted in the 1830s (Bence-Jones 1988, 114). Archaeological testing (01E0875) by S. Johnston on the N side of the eighteenth century house recorded modern disturbance over a cobbled surface that is probably associated with the eighteenth century building. Beneath the cobbles mixed layers produced seventeenth century gravel-tempered wares and beneath these was the base of a NNE-SSW wall (Wth 1.8m; max. H 1.6m) with an associated stone floor on its W side. The wall is likely to be medieval, and probably from the castle mentioned in the Statute Rolls. Archaeological testing (04E1040) by C. Cotter uncovered another building (ME050-021009-) outside the medieval enclosure at E. (Johnston 2001) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 29 October 2021 - ME050-021007: Castle - ringwork, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME050-021007-. )Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape, with the WNW-ESE Castle River c. 100m to the N. Following Hugh de Lacy’s grant of Dunboyne to William le Petit the latter established this ringwork castle, perhaps adapting an older rath, on the S side of the stream as the caput or centre of the manor of Dunboyne. It was replaced by the stone tower house (ME050-021005-) built after 1475. Archaeological testing (01E0875) by S. Johnston in the area S of the eighteenth century house uncovered evidence of a wide, water-logged ditch (Wth of top 5m plus; D 2.5m plus) SE and SW of the house. It was filled with silts and clays that produced some animal bone but no dateable artefacts. The inner edge of this feature was not exposed but it was sealed by layers containing post-medieval wares and was centred on a point around the SW angle of the house. (Johnston 2001) Further archaeological testing (04E1040) by C. Cotter managed to sample a section of the U-shaped ditch at SW (Wth of top 8m; D 4.5m) that was filled with waterlogged silt deposits, including layers of brushwood and worked and unworked timbers at its base. These were beneath dried out silt and clay layers with coarse ceramics suggesting a twelfth or thirteenth century date. The topmost fill was similar although with less pottery, but it was cut by numerous pits and trenches. The interior of the enclosure appears to have been fairly large with habitation deposits that were severely truncated by the digging of cellars associated with the eighteenth century house. A metal-detection survey (04R0143) of the soils from the fosse recovered 180 metal object, mostly iron nails, but stick pins, keys, a metal mount and metal tools were also recovered (excavations.ie 2004:1230; 1231). . Further work by C. Cotter during 2005 in monitoring a sewer pipe extending E from the enclosure identified a prehistoric ring-ditch (ME050-021008-) in the interior of the enclosure, and this was fully excavated. The ditch of the medieval enclosure at E was equally large (Wth of top 8.5m; D 4.5m) and U-shaped but a wooden structure in the interior, 1m inside the inner edge of the fosse, with four corner posts and linking timbers might have formed a gatehouse or boxed sections of an earthen bank. Two phases separated by a layer of yellow boulder clay 1.5m from the top were identified in the fosse at E, with wood, including four ash bowls, in the basal layer but mortar and rubble was evident throughout both phases. While pottery from the fosse at S was largely local, at E there was a large proportion of exotic imports, largely French. From the pottery the ditch could have been completely backfilled by the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. The inner face of the fosse has a stone revetment with a battered slope W-N, and a recess in this face at NW could be the mouth of a garderobe chute, or a postern gate. The revetment was truncated by cellars at W but at N it returned towards the interior, and the revetment does not seem to have encompassed all the enclosure. A few sherds of Leinster cooking ware and Dublin fine ware, dating to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, is associated with the revetment. Some features from the occupation of the enclosure were also recorded on the N side of the eighteenth century house where the fosse of the enclosure was identified but not excavated. Features inside the enclosure at W that could date from the early or high medieval period include a kiln, a circular structure and a structure with four corner posts. The kiln was oval (dims 1.3m x 0.98m; max. D 0.25m) with a flue extending on the S side. Its base was burnt at S and its fill contained frequent charred seeds. The circular structure consists of two rings of stake-holes with 24 surviving in the inner (diam. 3.2m) and 31 in the outer ring (diam. 7m), but no entrance or internal features were present. The rectangular structure (dims 4m x 2.3m) had a large post-hole at each angle and might have supported a raised feature like a granary. At other points in the interior five trenches (D c. 0.6m) filled with rubble mortar may have provided foundations for masonry structures. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 26 November 2021 - ME050-021008: Ring-ditch, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME050-021008-. Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape, with the WNW-ESE Castle River c. 100m to the N. Further work in monitoring (04E1040) a sewer pipe extending E from the medieval ring-work castle (ME050-021007-) identified a ring-ditch in the N part of its interior. It was c. 4m from the N edge of the medieval enclosure fosse and may have been preserved by being under its bank. It is a circular area (int. diam. c. 6m) defined by a fosse (Wth 1.05m; max. D 0.96m) that had been removed by medieval activity at N, and it was fully excavated (excavations.ie 2005: 1175). The fosse was filled with fairly sterile orange to grey and brown clays and silts. The remains of a compacted cordoned urn was in the ditch at E and sherds of pottery were found in other parts of the ditch, but there was no evidence of any internal features. (Cotter 2008, 289-90) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 29 October 2021 - ME050-021009: Building, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME050-021009-. Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape, with the WNW-ESE Castle River c. 100m to the N. Archaeological testing (04E1040) by C. Cotter during 2005 uncovered the foundations of this structure just outside the outer edge of the fosse of the medieval ring-work castle (ME050-021007-) at E (excavations.ie 2005:1175). Parts of the W and S walls (Wth 1m) with the NW and SW angles of a rectangular building (ext. dims 8.65m plus E-W; c. 8m N-S) were recorded. The battered base of the W wall (H 0.6m) extended into the top of the enclosure fosse but it was not properly aligned with the ditch edge, indicating that the latter was fully backfilled when the wall was built. A blue/white jug, imported from the Low Countries and dating from the sixteenth century at the earliest is associated with this building as were two mid-sixteenth century coins. (Cotter 2008, 291) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 29 October 2021 - ME050-048: Enclosure - large enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME050-048----. Situated on a low E-W ridge. Centre-line testing (04E0485) by R. O’Hara (2004) of two fields in Testing area 1 of the Dunboyne link road (R157) to the M3 (excavations.ie 2004:1198) confirmed the presence of archaeological features where magnetic susceptibility and gradiometer surveys (06R0038) by J. Nicholls (2006) had already identified numerous anomalies. The area within the road-take was completely excavated (E003023) by A. O’Connell (O’Connell and Clark 2009) who uncovered a complex of monuments dating from at least the Early Bronze Age up to the high medieval period (excavations.ie: 2005: AD5; 2006:1525). SUMMARY: The monument consists of a large bivallate enclosure with a small D-shaped annexe (ME050-048005-) attached to the S of the outer fosse at SW. The enclosure and annexe were later incorporated together into a large rectangular enclosure. Stratigraphic relationships are difficult to establish outside the fosses of the enclosures themselves but an early feature is a ring-ditch (ME050-048001-). Twelve burials (ME050-048006-) and ten wells or water-holes (ME050-048002-) were also recorded in addition to two corn-drying kilns (ME050-048003-) and evidence of metalworking (ME050-048004-). The monument was deeply truncated by later ploughing and only the lowest levels of features survived, largely in the space between the inner and outer fosses of the large enclosure. The bases of 21 pits in the interior and 25 pits between the fosses were also recorded but positive evidence of houses is lacking. However, the artefacts and the environmental evidence recovered indicates a settlement, perhaps with a burial ground, and house structures may survive in the unexcavated E portion of the interior. Although some Neolithic flints were present and a concentration of early pits occurs inside the inner enclosure, the earliest structure was one of the water-holes dating from the Early Bronze Age followed by the Iron Age ring-ditch, which together constitute PHASE 1, but the inter-related complex of enclosures dates from the beginning of the fifth century AD to the end of the eleventh, and its form evolved in Phases 2 to 6. PHASE 2: The enclosure was established by digging the inner ditch around a large D-shaped area (int. dims c. 85m ENE-WSW; c. 58m NNW-SSE) with the straight side at N, although only the W half of the enclosure was within the road-take and the excavation. This is Phase 2, and the E part was recorded in a gradiometer survey (06R0038) which noted additional entrances in the outer fosse at N and SE (Nicholls 2006). The inner fosse is most massive (Wth of top 2m; D 1.35m) E of the entrance causeway (Wth 3.2m) at SW, and it is narrowest (Wth of top 1-1.4m; D 0.4-0.8m) where it was cut through a stonier boulder clay W of the causeway. The ditch E of the causeway had three fills, all of which had accumulated gradually, and had a plentiful supply of animal bone. A sample from the primary fill produced a C14 date of 434-640 cal. AD and numerous artefacts were recovered from the top fill, including a bone knife handle with ring and dot decoration, iron knife blades, a copper-alloy spiral-ringed pin, bone pins, iron ring-pins and an iron sewing needle. There was also charcoal, burnt bone, clay and metal slag, which might all be connected with a smithing hearth 18m W of the inner enclosure ditch. West of the causeway the ditch had 14 contexts, most of which accumulated gradually at the base of the ditch, but two consisted largely of redeposited boulder clay at the inner edge of the ditch and may be from a levelled inner bank. The remains of a young adult male were extended E-W in the supine position at the top of the fill, but the head was missing. A sample from the left tibia yielded a C14 date of 428-607 cal. AD. Significant amounts of animal bone were present in many of the layers and, although artefacts were fewer, metal slag was also present. The first recut of the inner enclosure followed the original line of the fosse but was not as deep and left the SW causeway in place. East of this feature the cut (Wth of top 1.5-2.4m; D 0.3-1m) had two fills that were naturally accruing but with some dumped material. It produced a wide range of artefacts and a large amount of animal bone. A sample from the primary fill had a radiocarbon date of 653-750 cal. AD. West of the causeway the first recut (Wth of top 0.8-1.55m D 0.2-0.8m) was not as deep as the original ditch. Most of the thirteen fills were natural accumulations but four consisted of redeposited boulder clay at the inner edge of the ditch. It produced a wide range of artefacts and had a plentiful supply of animal bone. A large oval pit (dims 4.5m NW-SE; 2.42m NE-SW; max. D 0.94m) cut through the ditch at N and was filled almost entirely with animal bone, but metal slag and a bone pin were also retrieved from it. (O’Connell and Clark 2009, 9-10) A second recut (Wth 0.6-1.5m; D 0.12-0.53m) W of the retained causeway at SW was limited (surviving L 24m) and had 13 naturally accumulating fills with the same range of artefacts although with the addition of a bone comb and a quernstone fragment. There was a significant amount of animal bone, and the remains of an adult female (25-30 years old at death) was in a W-E supine position with the head at W in the fosse. A sample from the right femur produced a C14 date of 668-870 cal. AD. East of the causeway a second recut (Wth of top 0.9-2.2m; D 0.3-0.76m) was also limited (surviving L 33m) and produced the same range of artefacts with the addition of a spindle whorl and more fragmented iron objects including nails. A sample of charcoal from the primary fill of this recut yielded a C14 determination of 678-774 cal. BC. There was a third recut (Wth 0.5-0.8m; D 0.42-0.5m) in Phase 6 limited (L 11.5m) to an area 13m NW of the causeway. It had three dumped layers and produced copious amounts of animal bone, but metal slag, burnt clay and charcoal were more prevalent in its primary layer. Six sherds of high medieval pottery, thought to have come from the original ditch in this area, may be from this recut. A little more than half the animal bones recovered in the excavation were retrieved from this ditch and its recuts, and the age of slaughter amongst cattle indicates a dairy economy. (O’Connell and Clark 2009, 11-12) PHASE 3: An outer fosse was added in a second phase of the large enclosure’s development. Around the E and S of the monument it is separated by a narrow berm (Wth c. 1-2m) from the inner fosse, but S-W-NE a wider berm (Wth 7-18m) intervenes and the outer fosse encloses a larger area (dims 110m E-W; 90m N-S). A D-shaped annexe (int. dims c. 28m E-W; c. 25m N-S) was subsequently attached to the W end of the S side, constituting PHASE 4. However, the outer enclosure ditch and that of the annexe were re-cut together in PHASE 5 with the result that the original outer enclosure ditch (Wth of top 2-2.75m; D 0.75-0.95m) of Phase 3 only survives in its original form (L 37m) where the annexe is attached. Its 16 fills included two compacted stony dumped layers in a limited area (Wth of top 1.5m) that could have formed a causeway into the annexe. The usual range of artefacts was recovered but also a baluster-headed pin and an iron omega-headed pin dating from the seventh to the tenth centuries. A small amount of slag and some animal bone were also recovered, and a sample from the basal fill produced a C14 date of 720-875 cal. AD. Six pits and a kiln cut or partially cut the backfilled ditch, and two burials, of an infant and a juvenile aged c. 6-8 years, were inserted into the topmost fills, perhaps the remnants of a childrens’ burial ground. (ibid. 12-14) The re-cutting of the outer ditch of the large enclosure incorporated the annexe and created an even larger enclosure (dims 115m N-S; 100m E-W) defined by a fosse with a likely SE entrance and constitutes PHASE 5. The original ditch (D 1.2-1.8m) of this phase varied in width and depth and drained aw - ME050-048001: Ring-ditch, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME050-048001-. O’Connell (O’Connell and Clark 2009) who uncovered a complex of monuments dating from at least the Early Bronze Age up to the high medieval period (excavations.ie: 2005: AD5; 2006:1525). The monument consists of a large bivallate enclosure with a small D-shaped annexe (ME050-048005-) attached to the S of the outer fosse at SW. The W part of a ring-ditch was within the excavated area, and it was just inside the inner fosse of the concentric enclosure at S. The ditch (Wth 1.6-2m; D 0.6-0.8m) with five fills of varying character enclosed a circular area (int. diam. c. 3.6m). No artefacts were recovered but bone was present in all of the fills, and while some is human dog is the only species positively identified. A charcoal sample from the primary fill produced a C14 date of 781-417 cal. BC while a sample from the final fill provided a date of 161 cal. BC – cal. AD 68. O’Hara (2004) of two fields in Testing area 1 of the Dunboyne link road (R157) to the M3 (excavations.ie 2004:1198) confirmed the presence of archaeological features where magnetic susceptibility and gradiometer surveys (06R0038) by J. Ten wells or water-holes are located between the inner and outer fosses of the large enclosure in the W-N area. Water-hole 1 is a circular pit (diam. 3m; max. D 2.28m) with straight sides and a flat base that draws water, and it happens to be situated between the inner and outer fosses of the large enclosure. Three layers with a large silt content filled the bottom two thirds of the pit. No artefacts were recovered but charcoal from the second lowest fill produced a C14 date of 2131-1886 cal. BC. Its upper fills contained some burnt stone, and an adjacent pit (diam. 1.5-1.75m; max. D 0.68m) with similar material may be the trough and the last remnant of a fulacht fia. (O’Connell and Clark 2009, 4-5) The remaining water-holes are medieval in date and are located in the W-N area between the inner and outer fosses of the large enclosure. No. 9 (dims 1.8m x 1.7m; D 0.54m) with a C14 date of 668-870 cal. AD was truncated by the fosse of the outer enclosure that was dug right over it. The water-holes generally produce radiocarbon dates between the end of the seventh century and the end of the ninth century AD. They are normally circular to oval (dims 2.95m x 2.2m; D 1.7m: to 4.64m x 4.1m; D 2.21m) in form, are usually water-logged at the bottom, and above the basal silt their fill will include some redeposited boulder clay slumped from the sides and other dumped material. Three of the water-holes have single steps of unexcavated boulder clay at one side of the funnel-shaped pits. As the basal deposits are waterlogged they preserve wooden and leather artefacts and also provide copious environmental samples. No. 4 is perhaps the largest (dims 4.7m E-W; 2.7m N-S; max. D 2.35m) with a step (D below top 1.05m) at its W point. This well is also unique in having four large post-holes straddling its mouth that may have formed a superstructure to assist in raising heavy water-filled vessels. Water-hole 8 (dims 4.2m x 3m; D 1.56m) was just outside the line of the outer enclosure at W and produced the earliest medieval radiocarbon date amongst the wells of 400-570 cal. AD. It may be contemporary with the establishment of the inner fosse of the large enclosure in Phase 2. The monument consists of a large bivallate enclosure with a small D-shaped annexe (ME050-048005-) attached to the S of the outer fosse at SW. Only two features that can be described as kilns were identified. One from the NE part of the excavated area was between the inner and outer fosses of the large enclosure. It was of figure-of-eight form (dims 2.54m E-W; 0.56-0.87m; D 0.24m) cut into the subsoil. The fire-reddened W pit had three fills which produced charred samples of barley, oats, rye and wheat and a C14 date of 662-885 cal. AD. The second kiln cut the top of the outer enclosure ditch at S and was also of figure-of-eight form (dims 1.5m x 1m; D 037m). Its seven fills included two with clay lining and two oxidized layers while the uppermost had four sherds of high medieval pottery, a stick pin and a sewing needle. Three bowl furnaces, one inside the inner fosse of the large enclosure at N, the others between the two fosses at SW and WNW, were recorded. The furnaces (dims 0.36m x 0.34m; D 0.06m to 0.99m x 0.96m; D 0.13m) had fills of oxidised clays and charcoal, and a sample of charcoal provided a C14 date of 565-666 cal. AD. (O'Connell 2009; O’Connell and Clark 2009, 30) The product of the charcoal-making pit, located just inside the inner fosse of the large enclosure at NW, would have been used in metalworking, but this example is later in date than the bowl furnaces recovered. The pit (dims 3m x 1.07-1.4m; D 0.28-0.37m) had an oxidised base and was filled with alternate layers of ash and charcoal covered by three backfilled deposits. A sample of charcoal provided a C14 date of 1035-1225 cal. AD (ibid. 30-31). Two compacted stony dumped layers in a limited area (Wth of top 1.5m) of the outer fosse of the large enclosure at one point could have formed a causeway into the annexe. However, the ditch of the annexe was re-cut with that of the outer fosse of the large enclosure in Phase 5 with the result that the original annexe ditch (Wth of top 0.5-1.75m; D 0.47-0.85m) only survives in a short section (L 9.8m) at NW, in the angle created between the Phase 3 and Phase 5 ditches. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
