Located on a rise that is on a slight E-facing slope in a gently undulating landscape. This was described in 1968 (SMR file) as a raised oval and grass-covered area (dims 59m NE-SW; 47m NW-SE) defined by a scrub-covered earthen bank (at SW: Wth of base 5.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.6m) SSW-WNW and elsewhere by a slight internal lip and a scrub-covered external scarp (at NE: Wth 4m; H 2.7m ), with traces of external fosse W-NNE. There were modern gaps in the perimeter at ESE, W and NNW but the original entrance was not determined. The visible profile had been removed by 1995 (OSAP). The original entrance could be the oversailing of the bank at S as it approaches from the W that creates a tangential ramp entrance (L 7.5m; Wth of base 1.4m) rising from the E. In the interior a slightly raised circular area (diam. 9.6m E-W; 8.9m E-W; max. H 0.5m) W of the centre could be a hut-site. Located in a slight SSE-NNW valley, and c. 700m WSW of the early monastery (ME012-016----) that became the parish church of Castletown parish. The barony of Morgallion was granted by Hugh de Lacy after 1172 to Gilbert de Nangle, and as this was the caput or centre of the fief the motte may have been erected shortly after the grant. This is a flat-topped, subcircular earthen mound (dims of top 28.5m NW-SE; 23.6m NE-SW; diam. of base 50m NW-SE; H 7m at NW to 7.6m at SE) defined by wide fosse (Wth of top c. 10m; Wth of base 2.5-3m; ext. D 2.1m at NW to 3.3m at SE) with an external bank that is most massive (Wth of base 11m; ext. H 2.5m) SE-S (max. ext. dims 80m NW-SE). There is a gap in the outer bank at ENE and there are slight traces of a bank at the summit of the mound. The mound is grass-covered with some scrub and it has some mature deciduous trees. The outer bank extends into a crescent-shaped berm (Wth of top 9m) defined by a scarp (H 2m) with a field bank and outer ditch beyond W-N, which could have served as a bailey. A grass-covered rectangular area (dims c. 60m NE-SW; c. 50m NW-SE) extends S from the motte, bounded by a scarp at NW and traces of a fosse at S that merges into the hillslope at E. This bailey is cut by a defunct N-S railway at W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Located at the N tip of a low S-N spur. A church at Kilpatrick is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 261). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel as reasonably well repaired (Erlington 1864, xcvi), but according to Dopping (1682-5) St Patrick’s church had been in ruins since 1641 and the graveyard was not enclosed (Ellison 1973, 4). The church is depicted as a roofless ruin on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map of Morgallion. The church was rebuilt in 1823 (Lewis 1837, 1, 310-11) but fabric of the older structure is incorporated in it. This church is now derelict. The site of the medieval parish church of Kilpatrick, now called Castletown Kilpatrick, is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 65m NE-SW: c. 55-70m NW-SE) defined by earthen banks, with a masonry wall at W where there is an access lane. A cross-slab (dims 0.41m x 0.16m; H 0.98m) with an incised latin cross inside a moulded frame occupying the whole E face is in the graveyard W of the church. A fret pattern occupies the space above the arms of the cross. A single ogee-headed window, a double ogee-headed window and a cinquefoil window are extant in the tower at the W end of the present church. Over the E window of the church is a large fragment of a female effigy of late 15th century date, and a fragment of a tomb surround that might be from the same tomb is built into the tower over the doorway. However, a fragment of a knight’s foot in the graveyard that might also be from the same tomb (Hunt 1974, 1, 204) could not be found. A stone head is in the W wall of the church. Over the E window of the present Church of Ireland church on the site of the medieval parish church of Castletown Kilpatrick (ME012-016----) is a large fragment of a female effigy of late 15th-century date, and a fragment of a knight’s foot is in the graveyard may be from the same piece. From Hunt (1974, 1, 204): Effigy of a woman. Late 15th century Built into the wall at the east end of the church is a three-quarter length effigy of a woman. The lower portion has been broken away, but it is possible to see that she wore a long gown, the skirt falling in pleated folds and with medium full sleeves. The gown is cut low on the neck, the bodice having wide reveres which cover the shoulders, and the high neck of the kirtle can be seen above it. Her head lies upon a tasselled cushion, and she wears a turret head-dress of the Meath style upon her head. This has not got a brow-band, but seems to be an intermediate form between the Athboy type with broad brow-band and the very elaborate and exaggerated form shown at Killeen in the same county. The lady may have been part of a double effigy, as the foot of a knight shod in a sabaton and resting upon a dog is to be seen in a clump of trees near the west end of the church. The date of the effigy must be late fifteenth-century. A fragment of a tomb-surround that might be from the same tomb as the female effigy (ME01-016002-) on the E gable of the church is built into the tower over the doorway. (Hunt 1974, 1, 204) From Hunt (1974, vol. 1, 204): No. 185. Fragments of a tomb-chest Late 15th century. (Kilpatrick) Built into the wall over the south door in the tower of the church are some fragments of a late fifteenth-century tomb-chest with figures of saints. They are in the typical Meath style and portions of two figures of a side- or end-slab remain. On the dexter is St. Catherine, crowned, and with a sword held in both hands, and on the sinister, the upper portion of St. Peter holding a large key upright in his right hand. Both figures stand under foliate ogee niches. Located at the SE tip of a low NW-SE spur, with the headwaters of a small N-S stream c. 50m to the E. A magnetic gradiometer survey (19R0077) conducted by J. Nicholls on behalf of Meath County Council identified a circular area defined by a fosse-like feature that has discontinuities at NE, S and W (Nicholls 2019, 7). Archaeological testing (19E0565) confirmed a circular enclosure (dims c. 32m N-S; c. 30m E-W) defined by a silted fosse (Wth of top 1.2-1.6m) that was encountered at three points. The gradiometer survey also identified a linear feature (dims c. 10m E-W; c. 2m N-S) in the interior with a spur (L c. 4m) extending S from its W end. This is probably a souterrain, and the testing exposed it as a band (Wth 1.8m) of clay and gravel with some stones and flecks of charcoal. There was a post-hole with charcoal just to its N. A second outer ditch (L c. 20m NNE-SSW), recorded by the gradiometer survey c. 10m E of the enclosing fosse was confirmed (Wth 1.4m) as filled with a dark brown silt with charcoal flecks during the testing, but none of the features was sampled.
