Situated on a meandering esker ridge which extends off to the N and NW but which has been quarried immediately to the SE and S. This was described in 1969 (SMR file) as a raised oval and grass-covered area (dims 35m NNW-SSE; 24m ENE-WSW) that slopes down steeply to the E and S (H 1.6m) defined by an overgrown fosse (Wth of top 6m; int. D 2.2m; ext. D 1.5m) SE-SSW but the fosse (Wth of top 9m; Wth of base 2.5m; int. D 2.5m; ext. D 1.4m) NW-NNE has been re-used as a roadway. Elsewhere the perimeter is reduced to a overgrown scarp and the fosse to a berm. The original entrance is not recognised. The visible profile had been removed by 1995 (OSAP), and it is now partially on a hard-stand within forestry (OSAP: 2017). Archaeological testing (18E0196) by C. Duffy c. 50m to the NW produced no related material (excavations.ie 2018:486). This site (BGE: 1A/36/2) was excavated (02E0833) ahead of the Gas Pipeline to the West. Located on a steep slope below the crest of a ridge, at the point where marshy pasture becomes bog it consisted oval trough (1.7m diam. 0.74m deep) contained twelve fills. A radiocarbon date of 2290-1920 cal. BC was recovered from the basal fill. Four rectangular and nineteen smaller circular stakeholes were cut into the trough base. a further eight stakeholes and two shallow pits were located to the NW of the trough. A small pit located SE of the trough had a high charcoal content and returned a date of 2290-2020 cal. BC. A rough brushwood layer occurred between the two main layers mound material which was located 2m downslope of the trough. The site (BGE: 1A/36/1) was exposed during topsoil stripping for the Gas Pipeline to the West and partially excavated (02E0883) to negate immediate impact. The form of the site was dominated by the arcs of a pennanular ditch, which topographical survey revealed to have formed part of a distinct platform at the apex of a N-S gravel ridge. The exposed interior space (5m NS x 13m EW) and eastern arc of the ditch were truncated by burials. The exterior space was dominated by pits and stakeholes which were concentrated around the ditch entrance (1.6m w.). Later medieval linear ditches were identified, placing the pennanular ditch in the corner of a medieval field system. Radiocarbon analysis of fill of the penannular ditch returned a date of AD 420-620 and a bone spindle whorl, copper-alloy chain links were recovered. Sixteen burials were excavated, three of which were located within the interior space. The burials were identified as those of six adults, four children, two early postnatal infants and five neonates. There was little consistency in the axes of burial; a single burial had 'earmuff' stones and another a 'pillow' stone. Dating of the burials indicated interment was undertaken between 10th-13th centuries AD. Middle Bronze Age activity was also identified on site indicating reuse and continuity within the landscape (Baker 2004; 2007; 2007a).
