Located on top of a small hill, this souterrain has many traditions associated with it. It was reputedly discovered in 1750 when a skeleton was found in the beehive chamber. From a chalice dated 1635 and other paraphernalia found with it, the remains are thought to be those of a priest from the Penal times (Ussher 2012, 53), although the discovery of the passage, or perhaps its re-discovery, seems to have occurred c. 1896 (Rotheram 1897, 427). An upper E-W passage (L c. 6m) is largely open but slopes down steeply to a small rectangular chamber. From this a narrow passage (L 1.8m; Wth 0.45m; H 0.65m) leads N to a seeming dead-end but a trapdoor in the roof leads to a more spacious passage (Wth c. 1.05m; H c. 1.3m) that curves around to NW and then SW (L c. 13m) before entering a beehive chamber (diam. c. 2.3m; H 2.2m). From the trapdoor this passage also extends slightly S (L c. 1.2m). The beehive chamber has two air vents in the roof and a cupboard (Wth 0.4m; H 0.5m; L c. 1.5m) above the floor on the wall at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on top of a hill. This is an oval grass-covered area (dims 50m ENE-WSW; 37m NNW-SSE) that slopes down (H 1.1m) from the W to the centre. It is defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 6-7m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 2.6-2.9m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 9.5-11m; Wth of base 2.5m; ext. D 0.8m at ENE to 1.6m at WSW) from an overgrown outer bank (at ENE: Wth 5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.2m) NW-N-SE that might be a field bank. There is a berm (at ENE: Wth 5m) between the fosse and outer bank at N-SE. The entrance through the inner (Wth of base 2.1m) and outer (Wth of base 4.3m) banks and a causeway (Wth of top 2.7m; H 0.7m) are at NNE. There is a depression (dims 9.5m E-W; 5m N-S; D 0.3m) E of the centre that could be a collapsed souterrain, of which there is a local tradition. The inner bank has inner facing stones NE-SE and on either side of the entrance. There is an E-W field bank outside the perimeter SE-WSW. Located on a rise in an undulating low-lying landscape. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 27m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by a slight earthen bank (at NE: Wth of base 4m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.9m) largely reduced to a scarp (at SW: Wth 2.5m; H 1.4m) and an outer fosse (at SW: Wth of top 5.5m; Wth of base 2m; ext. Situated on a rise in a relatively low-lying area. A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 50m) is depicted only on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘Fort’. There is no visible evidence of any monument but it was probably a rath. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 31 October 2018 - ME008-026: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME008-026----. A castle at Crossdrum in Killeagh parish is not recorded in the Civil Survey (1654-6) or on the Down Survey (1655-8) maps, although 300 acres there were owned in 1640 by Patrick Plunkett, Lord Dunsany (Simington 1940, 273). It is depicted as a rectangular structure (dims c. 10m NE-SW; c. 5m NW-SE) with a projection at the E end of the NW side on the 1836 OS 6-inch map. It is also depicted with a rectangular enclosure (dims c. 25m NW-SE; c. 20m NE-SW) attached to its NW side on this map. The castle is located on a low N-S ridge and was described in 1970 as a raised oval and grass-covered enclosure (dims of top 41m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by low banks on natural scarps (H 2.3m at N to 3.8m at W) on all sides except the S where the castle itself was visible at the SE angle. This was a small rectangular structure (int. dims 2m N-S; 4.2m E-W) defined by grass-covered banks (Wth of base 3-5m; int. H 0.4-0.6m; ext. H 0.8m at W to 3m at E) with traces of stone facing. The castle had a small rectangular enclosure (dims 8m E-W; c. 6m N-S) attached to the W that rose slightly over the N enclosure. By 1984 only a broad grass-covered platform (dims 55m N-S; 32m E-W; max. H 2.5m) which appears to be natural was visible.
