Situated on a short NE-SW section (H c. 4-5m) of an esker ridge that is generally running NW-SE. This is undoubtedly the stronghold implied in the townland name Dangan. It is a grass-covered oval area (dims of top c. 35m ENE-WSW; c. 23m NW-SE) defined by a fosse (Wth of top 4.7m; int. D 1m; ext. D 0.5m) and outer bank (Wth of base 3m; ext. H 1m) across the ridge S-W but the bank is largely reduced to a scarp (at ENE: Wth 3.5m; H 1m) and the fosse to a berm (at ENE: Wth 2m). There is an entrance ramp (Wth of base 5m) at NE, and there is a small mound (diam. of base 2m; H 0.2m) in the interior towards the SW edge. At the bottom of the ridge is a second scarp (at ENE: Wth 3m; H 1.4m; at WSW: Wth 2.6m; H 1.7m) which is only missing SW-NW, and an external fosse largely reduced to a berm (at ENE: Wth 1.5m) NW-E-SE. There is an entrance (Wth of base 3m) through the lower scarp and a causeway (Wth of top 3.2m; H 0.4m) at NE. Situated on a local rise in a level landscape. In 1380 Sir Simon Cusack gave the manor of Dangan to his son, John. The inheritance became dispersed afterwards but in the early fifteenth century Dangan passed by marriage, together with other Meath manors, to Sir Richard de Wellesley, who had been sheriff of Kildare in 1416 and 1418 (Ellison 1966, 316). Thereafter, all the proprietors are known. The Wellesleys became Protestants after 1640 and increased their estates throughout the seventeenth century (ibid. 316-18). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Valerian Weisley owned 380 acres at Dingen, and on the premises were ‘one castle, one mill and some thatch houses and a chapell’ (Simington 1940, 174). He also owned almost 600 acres elsewhere in the parish (ibid. 173-6). The last Wellesly was Garret, a parishioner of Jonathan Swift’s at Laracor (ME036-034----) and a distant relation of John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism in England. He died childless in 1728 but he bequeathed Dangan to a cousin, Richard Colley of Castlecarbury (KD008-001003-), on condition that he changed his name to Wellesley (Ellison 1966, 319). Richard invested in the Dangan estate and is probably responsible for draining the land and building the new two storey mansion that is still extant as a ruin. His son, Garrett, who became the first viscount Wellesley and Earl of Mornington was a talented musician and composer, but his income never matched his requirements and he began to mortgage the estate (ibid. 324-5). His fifth son, Arthur, later to be victorious over Bonaparte at Waterloo in 1815 and to be created the first Duke of Wellington, was born on the first of May 1769, reputedly at Dangan (Anon. 1841). By the end of the eighteenth century the Dangan estate was mortgaged and it was acquired by a Thomas Burrowes (Ellison 1966 329), who leased it to tenants, some of whom proved to be unsatisfactory. The castle was almost completely burned in 1809 (Lambert 1977, 129) and was never restored (Anon. 1841). The ruins of the eighteenth-century mansion are on the site of the tower house. A drawing by Francis Place made in 1699 (Maher 1934, Pl. 8) shows one wall of the old castle that was undoubtedly a tower house surviving to about three storeys, but no features are noteworthy. Some of the original fabric may exist in the E wing of the surviving ruin where the walls are thick and have a base-batter. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated in a low-lying landscape on the demesne of Dangan. A small rectangular embanked enclosure (dims c. 25m NE-SW; c. 25m NW-SE) with smaller rectangular bastions at the E and S angles is depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a battery. It was described in 1969 (SMR file) as a low flat-topped grass-covered area defined by low scarps (Wth 3.5m; H 0.8m), but its visible profile was largely gone by 2000 (OSAP). The earthwork was a toy fort built to indulge the child Garret Wellesley (b. 1735), who would become better known as the father of Arthur Wellesley, the victor of the battle of Waterloo in 1815 and the first Duke of Wellington. Richard Colley of Castlecarbury (KD008-001003-) inherited Dangan castle (ME0423-009----) and its estate from a Garret Wellesley on condition that he changed his name to Wellesley, which he did. He invested in beautifying the estate, and indulged the creativity of his son Garret who was an infant prodigy. Garret was gifted in engineering as well as in music where he made his mark as a composer and became the first Professor of Music at Trinity College Dublin in 1764 (Ellison 1966-7, 319). A description of Dangan in 1748 by Mrs Pendarves, the diarist who is better known under her second married name Mrs Delaney, describes the grounds of Dangan as having ‘..a garden of 600 Irish acres. A gravel walk around the house to the great lake 52 feet broad and 600 yards long. The lake contains 26 acres, is of an irregular shape with a fort built in all its forms… There are several ships, one a complete man of war. My godson (Garret) is governor of the fort and lord high admiral...’ Richard Pococke, the writer and traveller, visited Dangan in 1752 and describes the lake ‘…at the lower end is a very large piece of water, at one corner of which is an island, it is a regular fortification. There is a ship, a sloop, and boats on the water, and a yard for building… On a round hill near the house is a temple and the hills around are adorned with obelisks, pillars and some buildings’. Located on a fairly level landscape on the demesne land of Dangan House, which is c. 550m to the SE. The cropmark of a subcircular enclosure (dims c. 45m N-S; c. 38m E-W) defined by a faint fosse feature is only visible on Google Earth (14/07/2018). It is bisected by a NNE-SSW field drain, and it is not represented on any OS 6-inch map. It was first reported by Jean Charles Caillere. Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape. The mound (diam. of base 21m; H 2.5m), known locally to have been a graveyard called Killahaushkeen, had been cut by the R158 Trim to Summerhill road, which was established by the eighteenth century. The name was also recorded in the 1930s (IFC: Schools Collection, vol. 692, 176). A proposed re-alignment necessitated archaeological testing (04E0986) of the mound, the W half of which had largely been removed by the existing road, but a bordering ditch was revealed in excavation on this side. The mound is a natural sand ridge with disturbed inhumations immediately beneath the sod extending to a max. depth of 1.3-1.9m. Beneath disturbed levels 17 extended inhumations were identified, of which only seven were recovered, and two collections of flat stones could have covered burials that were not excavated. Several of the burials could have been marked by collections of small stones, and a rectangular iron buckle was associated with one burial, which might be an adult male. The C14 dates for three burials range from the seventh to the eighteenth centuries: Cal AD 1609-1796; Cal. AD 688-754; Cal AD 974-1155. The partial remains of a structure consisting of a wall and a cobbled surface (L 7.5m; Wth c. 1m) is preserved under the road just N of the mound. (Breen 2007; McCullough 2008) Including the disarticulated remains, thirty five individuals were represented. A fifth were neo-natal and infants, while juveniles and adolescents amounted to almost a quarter. 57% of the sample were adults, of whom 44% were male. The recovered remains provide evidence of a carbohydrate-rich diet but without evidence of sugar. The wide date range militates against any population analysis.
