Situated at the highest point of a broad NW-SE ridge. A circular enclosure is depicted on a manuscript map (21 F 14 (44)) of 1802 in NLI, and it is represented as a D-shaped enclosure (dims c. 25m NW-SE; c. 20m NE-SW) with a curved edge SW-NW, perhaps the last remaining quadrant of a rath, on the 1836 and 1912 editions of the OS 6-inch map. The motte is a circular, grass and scrub-covered, flat-topped earthen mound (diam. of top 12m E-W; diam. of base 45m E-W; H 8.7m at E to 11m at W) defined by a fosse (at W: Wth 6m; ext. D 0.5m), largely removed by quarrying N-E-S, and with a counterscarp bank (at W: Wth c. 3m; ext. H 1.5m) S-W-N. There is a raised rectangular, grass and scrub-covered bailey (dims 44m N-S; 31m E-W) defined by scarps (at E: Wth 7m; H 3.5m) attached to the E. Located on a steep S-facing slope of the River Blackwater, with a WNW-ESE section of the stream c. 500m to the S. Archaeological testing (04E1060) by D. Bayley (2005) at Testing Area 9 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features in a limited area (dims c. 20m x c. 12m) that were completely excavated (E003187) by S. Rathbone in January 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1294) as Derver 1. It consisted of a hearth (dims 0.47m x 0.4m; T 0.12m) with a fire-reddened base, two small pits (dims 0.34m; x 0.22m; D 0.14m: 0.42m x 0.4m; D 0.08m) and a larger pit (dims 2.65m x 1.18m; D 0.38m) with largely sterile fills that had some charcoal flecking. A small cut (dims 0.61m x 0.48m; D 0.15m) produced 33 fragments of Beaker pottery dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, 19 of which came from the same vessel, but no radiocarbon date was obtainable. There were also two shallow hollows, one of which (diam. 0.7m; D 0.12m) contained the skeleton of a lamb and may be recent. Located on a steep S-facing slope of the River Blackwater valley, with a WNW-ESE section of the stream c. 370m to the S. Archaeological testing (04E1060) by D. Bayley (2005) at Testing Area 9 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features that were completely excavated (E003186) by S. Rathbone in January 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1295) as Derver 2. It consisted of two pits (dims 1.2mx 1.04m; D 0.3m: 0.85m x 0.72m; D 0.07m) that were 8m apart, each filled with dark sandy clay with occasional small stones and frequent charcoal inclusions. A small part of the base of one pit was fire-reddened and they may have been hearths, although no artefacts were recovered and no radiocarbon dates are available. Located on a steep S-facing slope of the River Blackwater valley, with a WNW-ESE section of the stream c. 200m to the S. Archaeological testing (04E1060) by D. Bayley (2005) at Testing Area 9 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features in a limited area that was completely excavated (E003185) by S. Rathbone in January 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1296) as Derver 3. It consisted of a single shallow hearth (dims 1.46m x 1.04m; D 0.08m) with a primary fill of a firm, orange-brown, burnt sandy clay with occasional stones beneath a soft black-grey, sandy clay with occasional stones and frequent charcoal inclusions. Situated on the floor of the valley of the River Blackwater, with a NNW-SSE section of the stream c. 5m to the SW. Archaeological testing (04E1060) by D. Bayley (2005) at Testing Area 9 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features in a limited area that were completely excavated (E003184) by D. Gallagher in January 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1297) as Derver 4. It consisted of a circular hut-site (diam. 9.3m) and associated pits. The structure is defined by an arc of post-holes (diam. c. 0.28m; D 0.16m) placed c. 0.3m apart NW-E-SSE but post-holes are absent on the W side, probably because of flooding from the river. There are some internal post-holes but no hearth or entrance is identified. A group of post-holes (dims c. 2.6m x c. 2.4m) just to the E is interpreted as an annexe, but a slot-trench is not associated with either structure. A flint flake was the only artefact recovered but radiocarbon dates derived from hazel charcoal from four of the post-holes varied from 732-372 cal. BC to 392-203 cal. BC, providing a firm date in the Early Iron Age. Other features were some irregularly-shaped pits (dims 0.9m x 0.45m; D 0.18-0.2m to 3.1m x 1.1m; D 0.28m) c. 4m NW of the hut-site and isolated deposits and pits within 10m of it, one of which returned a C14 date of 795-421 cal. BC but another provided a date of 877-1024 cal. AD. There was also some burnt mound material but no trough is identified. Situated on the floor of the valley of the River Blackwater, with a WNW-ESE section of the stream c. 50m to the S. Archaeological testing (04E1060) by D. Bayley (2005) at Testing Area 9 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features in a limited area (dims c. 25m x c. 15m) that were completely excavated (E003183) by D. Gallagher in January 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1298) as Derver 5. Three pits (dims 1.1m x 0.4m; D 0.3m to 1m x 0.9m; D 0.18m), a linear feature (dims 4m x 1.1m; D 0.15-0.3m) and a spread (dims 3.46m x 3.3m; T 0.1m) of mottled brown-grey clayey silt with some charcoal inclusions were excavated. The pits were filled with clay that had some heat-affected stone and charcoal. Samples of charred hazel from a pit produced a C14 date of 43 cal. BC – 126 cal. AD (Beta 247195), while a sample of hazel charcoal from the upper fill of the linear feature yielded a date of 1734-1515 cal. BC (Beta 247194). No trough or mound was identified and no artefacts were recovered but the presence of a burnt mound of two different periods of use is indicated. Archaeological testing (E003594) by S. Rathbone (2007) of an area of almost 4 hectares required for the M3 development identified and excavated two small pits that could be hearths (excavations.ie 2007:1300). One is oval (dims 0.86m NW-SE; 0.44m NE-SW; D 0.15m) with a soft pink/brown silty clay layer that has small stones and pieces of charcoal over a soft black silty clay with frequent charcoal. About 50m to the SW was a second subcircular feature (dims 0.76m N-S; 0.66m E-W; D 0.06m) with a single fill of a soft black silty clay with frequent pieces of charcoal and small stones. No artefacts were recovered. Archaeological monitoring of soil-stripping over the remainder of the area by the same archaeologist under the same licence produced no further material.
