Located at the crest of the N-facing slope of a hill. The motte is a circular grass and scrub-covered, flat-topped mound that can be distinguished from the fosse (max. diam. of top 14m NW-SE; diam. of base 27.5m NW-SE; H 2.5m at SE to 4.3m at NW; total H 4.3m at SE to 7.1m at NW) with some trees defined by a fosse (Wth of top 4.5m at NW to 9.5m at SW; int. D 1.6-2.8m; ext. D 1.5-1.8m). There is a raised rectangular and grass-covered bailey (dims of top 29m NE-SW; 25m NW-SE) defined by traces of a bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.5m) at E and S and by overgrown fosses (Wth of top 7-9m; int. D 2.5-3m generally to 1.6m at NW; ext. D 0.2m at NE and SE to 1.4-1.7m) on every side extending ESE of the motte. Located on the E-facing slope of the hill that has the motte and bailey (ME006-010----) at its summit. Aerial photographs (GB92.FD. 03 and 05), taken in September 1982, show a series of linear banks forming what might be a road ascending the hill on the S side of a WNW-ESE current field bank. The road (L c. 140m; Wth 13-22m) is between the field bank and a grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 3m; H 0.8m) on the S side. There is a gap (Wth 10m) about the middle of the S bank where the relict banks turn S. Field system (ME006-010002-) is in the field to the N. Situated on a low rise in a low-lying landscape c. 200m SW St Peter’s church and the medieval settlement of Drumcondra (ME006-012----). This is a circular, flat-topped mound (diam. of top 11m NE-SW; diam. of base 28m NE-SW; H 4.5-5.5m) with some trees defined by a slight fosse (Wth of top 3m at SW to 9m at NE: Wth of base 1.5m; ext. Situated in a relatively low-lying position between drumlins. Graham (1974, 54) suggests that it was founded by Walter de Lacy before 1241 but the first reference to its charter is in the early fourteenth century Dowdall Deeds. In 1412 Thomas Fleming, Baron of Slane, had a licence for a weekly market and an annual fair at Drumcondra (Cogan 1867, 294). The settlement had declined by the seventeenth century but in the Civil Survey (1654) the manor of Drumcondra is still held by the Flemings of Slane. The survey describes it as a church and two waste castles (Simington 1940, 365), undoubtedly the mottes (ME006-010----; ME006-011----) located c. 425m to the N and c. 200m SW of the church site respectively. The mottes testify to its former importance, but it is never likely to have been more than a village centred on its NW-SE Main Street that widened at its NW end and could have incorporated a fair green. (Bradley and King 1985 35; Bradley 1988-9, 44) Archaeological testing (98E0157) by Deirdre Murphy c. 60m NW of the graveyard produced no medieval material (excavations.ie 1998:506). Further archaeological testing (05E1296) by P. D. Sweetman on a plot (dims c. 100m N-S; c. 30m E-W) on the NE side of the Main Street had a similar result (excavations.ie 2005:1173). The site of the medieval parish church of Drumcondra is situated on a rise in an undulating landscape. A church at Drumgorrach is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 261), and Nicholas Fleming is recorded as the pastor here in 1388 (Cogan 1862 70, 2, 294). Ussher (1622) describes the church as in reasonable repair while the chancel was undergoing repairs (Erlington 1847-64, 1, xcii). According to Dopping’s visitation (1682 5) the church was dedicated to St. Peter and Robert Parkinson was the rector but the church had been ruinous since 1641 and it was not enclosed (Ellison 1973, 5). The present Church of Ireland church was built in 1766 (Lewis 1837, 1, 514) but it is now closed. There is no evidence of the medieval church apart from a cross-slab and a font in a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 68m NW-SE; c. 40m N-S; at E to c. 56m NNE-SSW at W) defined by masonry walls. The cross-slab is described (Bradley and King 1985, 36) as a sandstone slab (dims 0.58m x 0.32m; T 0.12m) with a ringed cross cut deeply into the stone leaving the quadrants raised. The font is rectangular (ext. dim. 0.57m; H 0.4m) with chamfered corners (Wth 0.12m) and under panels, and has a circular, flat bottomed basin (diam. 0.47m; D 0.27m). There are holes on the rim for a cover (Roe 1968, 114), but it has now been moved to a position outside the church at Siddan (ME006-056004-).
