The proposed project is located within the townlands of Graigs, Ardmulchan, Dollardstown, Dunmoe, Carranstown, Platin, Haystown and Carnuff, Stackallan, Harmanstown, Causetown, Garballagh, Commons, Downestown, Gillinstown, Longford, Rathdrinagh, Painestown, Thurstianstown, Knockcommon, Drumman, Laugher, Newtown and Platin.The proposed uprate project will comprise: • the replacement ("restringing") of the existing OHL circuit conductor wires with a new higher capacity conductor including installation of a new fibre communication connection; • the replacement of 42no. existing polesets - any replacement structures will be constructed at, or immediately adjacent to the existing structures they will replace, will be along the same alignment as existing, and will be of a similar height and appearance; • the replacement of steel members at 8no. steel angle masts; • replacement of hardware and fittings at all structure locations; • replacement and relocation of fibre communication structures; • all associated site development works; • Earthwire to be replaced between Angle Mast 94 and End Mast 108; • Tower painting at 10no. steel Angle/End masts; • foundation strengthening works at 4no. Situated at the edge of a S-facing slope down to a W-E section of the SW-NE River Boyne, with the stream c. 100m to the S. A church at Domnowe is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 261). Ussher (1622) describes the church as reasonably repaired but the chancel as ruinous (Erlington 1847-64, 1, xciv). According to Dopping’s Visitation (1682-5) St. Catherine’s church at Dunmoe was in ruins since 1641 and the graveyard was not enclosed (Ellision 1973, 5). The church is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 35m N-S; c. 30-35m E-W) defined by masonry walls with headstones dating from c. 1722 - c. 1920. The nave (ext. dims 11.5m E-W; 6.8m N-S) and chancel (ext. L 5.7m) of this church are possibly divided as traces of a cross-wall ar present. The W wall with a pointed window and an external square hood moulding, and part of the S wall with a mural stairs to the rood-loft survive (mex. ext. dims of church c. 17m E-W; 6.8m N-S). A pointed doorway (Wth 1m) towards the W end of the S wall is the only access to the church from outside, and a round-headed doorway (Wth 0.86m) further E on the S wall leads to a chamber (ext. dims 6.05m N-S; 4.72m E-W) with a N-S barrel-vault, which is a later addition. The chamber has a light in the E wall and a blocked light on the S wall. A passage (L 1.9m; Wth 0.75m) in the floor leads underground from the N to a burial vault (int. dims 2.95m E-W; 2.8m N-S), which has a N-S barrel-vault. The plain, octagonal, limestone font (ext. dim. 0.62m; H 0.38m) with a circular, straight-sided basin (diam. 0.46m; D 0.22m) and two receding mouldings underneath that was in the church (Roe 1968, 115) is now at the Roman Catholic church of St. Oliver Plunkett, in St. Mary’s Park in Navan (ME025-038----). Dunmoe castle (ME025-018002-) is immediately adjacent outside the graveyard to the E. The abpve description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on a bluff (H c. 20m at S) overlooking a weir on a W-E section of the River Boyne which is c. 100m to the S and c. 20m lower. This could be an early castle but its history is obscure. It withstood a siege by rebels in 1641 until Captain Power, its commander, was persuaded to surrender. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Thomas Darcy owned the entire parish consisting of 395 acres in 1640, and on the premises there was ‘a Castle, a Church, a Mill, an Orchard and a fishing weare’ (Simington 1940, 322). The D’Arcy family appears to have retained the castle in the Cromwellian settlement and rebuilt it in the reign of James II (1685-89). A drawing from 1795 by Francis Grose (1795, 82-3) shows it an occupied rectangular structure but it is said to have been burned in the rising of 1798 when the north half of it collapsed (Wilde 1849, 166-9). This is a large rectangular structure (dims c. 15m E-W; c. 10m N-S) with circular towers at the angles, but only those at SE and SW survive. The ground floor is buried but was vaulted and had a loft as well as well as two rows of long arrow-loops on the S wall which could indicated a thirteenth century date. There is a newel stairs in the SW tower which has a key-hole gun-loop. The first floor has large windows that are robbed. There is a two-storey gabled building with an oven at the ground floor attached to the E. The church (ME025-018001-) is immediately adjacent to the W. The cropmark of a subcircular area (int. dims c. 40m NW-SE; c. 35m NE-SW) defined by what might be a stone spread (Wth c. 6-12m) is most clearly visible on Google Earth (12/11/2005; 14/05/2020). It is accompanied by what is probably an outer fosse (Wth c. 5-10m) W-N-E and there is probably an entrance at NW where these features are narrowest and the external ground is level.
