There are references to a monastery of Kildalkey in the 8th century (Cuffe 1965, 194). An early monastery was founded by St Dympna or Damhnad of Tedavnet in Co. Monaghan, and she is also the patron of the church of Kildalkey. However, it is unlikely that she founded a church here with St Treana or Trian of Deadh, as its first abbot in the 5th century as suggested by Cogan (1862-70, 1, 141-3) since Trian may be associated with Kildellig, Co. Laois (Ó Riain 2011, 256-7, 577). A church at Kildalket is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 256) and Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel as ruined (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxv). Dopping (1682-5) describes it in the same condition and it was not then fenced (Ellison 1972, 12). The parish church of Kildalkey is situated on a rise in a level landscape and was within a circular graveyard (diam. c. 50-60m), which is now extended into a large sub-rectangular cemetery (dims c. 140m NW-SE; 45-70m NE-SW) extending to the W, which is defined by masonry and cement walls. The church is a divided nave (int. dims 13.35m E-W; c. 7m N-S) and chancel structure, of which only the pointed chancel arch (Wth 1.8m; H 2.5m) and portion of a tower (dims c. 5m E-W; c. 5m N-S) at the W end of the nave remain. A later mausoleum occupies the ground floor of the tower, of which only the N wall survives. St Dympna's holy well (ME029-020002-) is c. 60m to the E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). The parish church of Kildalkey (ME029-020----) is situated on a rise in a level landscape and was within a circular graveyard (diam. c. 50-60m), which is defined by a low scarp (H c. 0.5m). The graveyard is now extended into a large sub-rectangular cemetery (dims c. 140m NW-SE; 45-70m NE-SW) extending off to the W, which is defined by masonry and cement walls. Located in a hollow in a fairly level landscape. John O’Donovan writing in the 1830s describes Tobar Damhnata as almost dried up (Herity 2001, 67), but the dedication was compounded with Dympna of Gheel in Belgium, the patron saint of the mentally ill whose feastday is on May 15th. The well is depicted but not named on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map, and it is not represented on later maps. The well was restored by a local group in 2000 (French 2012, 69-71). It is now a rectangular stone-lined well (int. dims 0.85m E-W; 0.7m N-S; D 0.5m) approached by three steps from the W. It is within a cobbled enclosure (int. diam. 3.2m) with some offering, which is defined by a masonry wall (Wth 0.4m; H 1.15m). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 28 February 2019

A straight field bank running NNW-SSE (L c. 1.1km) c. 100-200m W of the Athboy River, which here is known as the Tremblestown River, is represented on the 1836 and 1912 editions of the OS 6-inch map, but it is described as ‘The Pale’ only on the latter. Situated on a level, low-lying landscape with a N-S section of the canalised Trimblestown or Athboy stream c. 100m to the E. This is described by S. McGlade who first reported it as a low-profile subcircular or D-shaped and grass-covered area (dims c. 50m NW-SE; c. 43m NE-SW) which may have been truncated by a mapped E-W field boundary at N, now removed. An aerial photograph by L. Swan (LS_AS_35BWN-0096_21) shows an oval feature (dims c. 10m E-W; c. 5m N-S) near the field bank at N with linear features extending from it to the SW and W. Other external features are visible on OSI images (2005-2012) and the enclosure is also visible on Google Earth (18/04/2009). Roman Catholic cemetery, c.1780. Variety of limestone, slate and cast-iron grave markers, dating to eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Remains of east and west walls of medieval church to site, with St. Dympna's Well to east. Rubble limestone boundary wall. Site extended, c.1969, to south with variety of limestone and marble grave markers and tall marble cross to centre. Rendered gate piers with cast-iron gates to entrance.
- Saint Dympna's Hall, almshouse, 1855–1860, Regional interest, registry number 14325002, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=ME&regno=14325002. Detached six-bay two-storey almshouse, built 1856, comprising of two central bays flanked by gabled and advanced end bays. In use as school, 1888-1931. Adapted to use as hall, 1951. Pitched slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls with stone eaves course and quoins. Timber sash windows with stone surrounds and sills, set in square-headed openings to ground floor and set in segmental-arched openings to first floor. Stone door surrounds with cornices and plaques above. Modern extension to south and sports hall to west.

Detached three-bay two-storey over basement parochial house, built c.1840. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles and rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with render quoins and string course. Wyatt style windows with stone surrounds and sills. Timber panelled door with fanlight and carved timber doorcase, with carved stone door surround and render decorative surround. Flight of stone steps to entrance door. Range of stone outbuildings to north-east with corrugated-iron roofs. Bounded by limestone wall with wrought-iron railings and gate.

Detached four-bay two-storey building, built c.1820, now vacant. Pitched slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls. Timber battened doors.
