Situated in a level landscape, c. 100m NNW of the site of the medieval parish church of Laracor (ME036-044----). This is a grass-covered, circular, and round-topped mound (diam. of base 20m; H 4m) with a stone-revetted ledge around the base that supports some mature deciduous trees. Its domed summit has led to it being classified as a barrow (Moore 1987, 30) but archaeological testing (04E0987) identified a fosse (Wth c. 5m) immediately around it, which could support either classification, but it was not excavated (Breen 2010, 4). The mound is located at the NW edge of a bivallate enclosure or rath (ME036-043001-) the two ditches of which were tested (Breen 2007), but the relationship between the mound and the enclosure ditches was not completely resolved. However, as the mound is within the area of the rath it is likely to be a motte (Breen 2010, 42-3) that was established after the rath was defunct, and was probably built as part of the medieval settlement around the church. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 9 November 2017 - ME036-043001: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME036-043001-. Situated in a level landscape. Remote sensing in advance of a new line for the R158 road from Trim to Summerhill and Kilcock identified a portion of a double-ditched circular enclosure, with the motte (ME036-043----) in the interior at NW. Archaeological testing (04E0987) showed that the inner V-shaped ditch (Wth of top 5m; D 2.1m) was 2.3m distant from the outer (Wth of top 2m; D 1.05m), and calibrated radiocarbon dates of AD 775-962 and AD 715-936 were recovered from the bases of the respective ditches (Breen 2010, 43, App. 16). This dating is supported by the artefacts recovered. There was no evidence of banks associated with either fosse but an entrance (Wth 6m) through the inner was occupied by the flexed burial of a child. The outer ditch had two entrance gaps, which were not investigated. The entrances are in the ESE part of the enclosure, and the monument is preserved beneath the road and in the field to the SW. Situated on top of a slight ridge and just SE of rath (ME036-043001-). Evidence of a possible a double ring-ditch was recovered in test excavation (04E0987) in the form of two arcs of fosses, the inner curved fosse (L 6m; Wth 1.75m; D 0.3m) separated by c. 3-4m from an outer curved fosse (L 7m; Wth 1m; D 0.2m) that had two inhumations on its line that were oriented N-S. Laracor is described in the Civil Survey (1656-8) as a small settlement consisting of a castle, some thatched cottages, a bridge and a church (Simington 1940, 176). The settlement was probably older and would have developed around the motte (ME036-043----) and the parish church (ME036-044----), both of which could date from the late twelfth century. Archaeological excavation (04E0987) in advance of a new line for the R158 road from Trim to Summerhill recovered a large quantity of medieval pottery, which was mostly from the topsoil, in the area E and N of the graveyard. No structures could be identified with the earlier material but occupation continued into the eighteenth century with appropriate ceramics, clay pipes and glass artefacts. Iron working was conducted in the area, and one structure (dims 6m x 6m) was evident in fragments of three walls associated with seventeenth and eighteenth century ceramics. (Breen 2007, 2010, 44-6) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 9 November 2019 - ME036-044: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME036-044----. Situated on a level landscape. William Scurlag granted the income of a church at Laracor to the Augustinian abbey of St. Thomas in Dublin (DU018-020051-) c. 1177 (Gilbert 1889, 37), probably in the hope that they would build one. The church at Lethercorre is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire., 5, 256). According to Cogan (1862-70, 2, 385) the church was dedicated to St. Peter, and the rectory of Laraghcorre was still amongst the possessions of St. Thomas’ at the Suppression in 1540 (White 1943, 30). Ussher (1622) describes the church as ruinous but the chancel as reasonably repaired (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxii). The church and chancel were in disrepair according to Dopping (1682-5), who says it was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, but repairs were almost completed by the Royal visitation (1693). In the meantime the chapel-of-ease at Summerhill (ME043-031----) was being used (Ellison 1972, 9-10). Jonathan Swift was the incumbent from 1700 until his death in 1745, and Laracor would have provided his principal income and Irish residence until he became Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral (DU018-020069-) in 1713, after which he employed a curate at Laracor. He also held the smaller parishes of Agher (ME048-009----) and Rathbeggan (ME044-030----). The house Swift is thought to have occupied (ME036-063----) is a castle located c. 150m NW of the church. His lifelong friend Esther Johnson, known as Stella, had a house (ME036-078----) at Knightsbrook, c. 1.2km to the NW of Laracor church, after she first came to Ireland in 1701. (Reynolds 1967, 41-3) The present church building dates to 1856 and was closed c. 1970, but two sketches dating from the mid-nineteenth century of the older structure show a western porch and two round-headed windows in the W gable, probably the work of the 1690s, under the stump of a belfry (Haworth 2009, figs 2, 3). A two storey building, probably a vestry, was attached to the N side of the church. The site of the medieval parish church is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 65m NW-SE: c. 55m NE-SW) defined by masonry walls with mature trees within the perimeter and headstones dating from c. 1750-1970. During conversion work c. 1983 part of the N wall (Wth 1-1.2m; L 9m plus; H 0.5-0.6m) of the medieval church with its footing and a blocked doorway (Wth 0.91m) was exposed within the 19th century church. A sandstone jamb with a chamfer was re-used in the fabric of the wall (ibid. 11). A collection of dressed stones from the graveyard that had been moved off the site are now returned. There is the head of a lancet window of thirteenth century date, and there are fragments that could be combined to make the head of a three-light cinquefoil window within a square head with solid spandrels. This would date to the fifteenth century and might have formed the E window of the medieval church, indicating a major rebuilding. There is also the octagonal base of a font (dims 0.53m x 0.53m; H 0.2m) with a central hour-glass perforation. Another stone from the reveal of a doorway has the remains of a stoup in a D-shaped hollow on one face while another face has a crest in relief that is quartered with a lion or lynx in each quarter, thought to represent the Linehan, Lenihan or Lynam family, who lived in the castle (ME043-063----), The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. The motte at Laracor (ME036-043----) was succeeded at some period by a castle, which is represented on the Down Survey (1656-8) maps of Moyfenrath barony and Laracor parish, for which see this web-page accessed on 09/11/2017: http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/down-survey-maps.php#bm=Moyfenrath&c=Meath&p=Lauracorr The terrier or commentary lists Gerald Linch of the Knock (ME043-021002-), Valerian Weisley of Dangan (ME042-009----) and Richard Linehann, an Irish papist, as the joint owners of 446 acres at Lauracorr. It describes Lauracorr as ‘..a small stone castle in repair with some cabins about it. There is near it the ruins of a chappell or church and a bridge over which the high way from Trim to Kilcock lyes likewise and under it runs the River Evernocke…’ The castle may have been built by the Linehan family, but according to the Civil Survey (1654-5) in 1640 the vicar, Mr. Bunning, had possession of the glebe including ‘a castle with a backside (Bakehouse?)’ (Simington 1940, 192). A later occupant was Jonathan Swift when he became rector of Laracor church (ME036-044----) in 1700 until he became Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral (DU018-020069-) in 1713, and less frequently until his death in 1745. A structure is described ‘Dean Swift’s Glebe House (in Ruins)’ on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map. The remnant of the castle survives as a conserved masonry pier (dims 2.5m E-W; 1.3m N-S; H 3.1m) which has a small projecting pier (dims 0.95m; 0.15m N-S; H 1.5m) attached on the S side. An illustration from 1847 shows it as it is today but with an external rebate c. 3m above the ground and a further rebate c. 2m higher up supporting a gable (Haworth 2006, 14-18, figs 6, 7). More than one period of building is probably represented in what was once probably a tower house.
