- ME010-013: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME010-013----. Situated on a slight rise in the valley of a small NW-SE stream that joins with many others to enter the River Blackwater close to Kells. Although Loughan of Castlekeeran is a parish in Meath diocese, a large part of it is in Co. Cavan. A church at this location in the deanery of Kells is not listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire, 6, 260-1), or by Ussher (Erlington 1847-64, lxxxvii-xc) or by Dopping (Ellison 1973, 7-9), indicating that the church might have been long defunct by the 13th century or be post-medieval in date. According to Lewis (1837, 2, 297) there was no Church of Ireland church in the parish of Loghan, the members in Cavan going to Virginia and those in Meath attending at Kells. The site of the medieval parish church would probably be in a townland with the parish name and a graveyard is marked on the 1836 and 1906 eds of the OS 6-inch map here at Loughan. This is a circular graveyard (dims 49.3m N-S; 47m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2 3m; H 1-1.4m) with trees and an external stone facing. The centre of the graveyard is a raised subcircular or D-shaped area (diam. 29.2m E-W; 25m N-S) defined by a fosse (Wth of top 5.2m; Wth of base 1.9m; ext. D 0.8m; int. D 0.6m) SW-NW, an earthen bank (Wth 2.6-3.4m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.5-0.7m) N-SE and a straight quarry scarp (H 2m) separated by a berm (max. Wth 8m) from the graveyard bank SE-SW where the mound has probably been removed. There is a path (Wth 1.5-1.8m) between the graveyard bank and the perimeter of the rath. The only evidence of a church is a piece of sandstone (dims 0.22m x 0.2; H 0.26m) in the E quadrant with a crude rebate for a door. The site of the medieval parish church of Loughan (ME010-013----) is within the circular graveyard (dims c. 49.3m N-S; 47m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 2-3m; H 1-1.4m) with trees and an external stone facing. The centre of the graveyard is a raised subcircular or D-shaped rath (ME010-013002-). The burials date from c. 1750-1965. The only evidence of the church is a piece of sandstone (dims 0.22m x 0.2; H 0.26m) in the E quadrant with a crude rebate for a door. Situated on the E-facing slope of a slight rise. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 32m E-W; 30.5m N-S) that slopes down slightly to the E. It is defined by slight traces of an earthen bank that are best preserved (Wth of base 5.5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 2.6m) SW-WNW but is largely reduced to a scarp (at ENE: Wth 4.5m; H 2m), and a wide, flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 7.5m-8m; Wth of base 3m; ext. D 0.6-0.8m). A small berm (Wth 1m) separates the fosse from an outer field bank (Wth 2-3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1m) with trees. The original entrance is not identified but there is a possible causeway (Wth of top 3m; H 0.3m) in the fosse at E. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.7m; at ENE: Wth of base 9m; int. H 1m; ext. H 2m), with some trees and an external stone facing W-N. There is no visible fosse and the original entrance is not identified. Situated on a slight rise in an undulating landscape. This is a slightly raised subcircular and grass-covered area (dims 32m E-W; 28m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 5-7m; int. H 0.3m at E to 1.3m at W; ext. H 1.3m at E to 2.6m at W) with some trees, and an outer fosse (Wth of top 8.5-10m; Wth of base 2m; D 0.7m) SW-NW. The entrance (Wth of base 2.2m) is at ESE. An outer bank (at E: Wth of base 6m; ext. H 0.5m) planted with trees was built NW-E-SE, and a small flat-toped mound (diam. of base 11.5m; diam. of top 4m; H 2.3m), perhaps for the construction of a gazebo, was added to the bank at N. H 0.4m; ext. H 1m) that is largely reduced to a scarp (at SSW: Wth 3.4m; H 1.1m). There is no visible fosse but the entrance (Wth of base 1.6m) is at E.
