Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape in the valley of the NW-SE River Blackwater, with the stream c. 1km to the E. A church at Martira is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 256). The church was a possession of the Knights Hospitallers of Kilmainham in Dublin at the Suppression in 1541 (Cogan 1862-70, 2, 260-1; White 1943, 115). Ussher (1622) describes it as ruinous (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxvi). According to Dopping’s Visitation (1682-5) the church was ruined but the chancel was roofed with slates, the windows were glazed, it had a clay floor, and was dedicated to St. Bridget. The graveyard was also fenced at that time (Ellison 1972, 11). The parish church of Martry is in a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 50-65m E W; c. 40m N-S) defined by masonry walls that has been extended (dims c. 50m E-W; c. 15m N-S) on the N side. An undivided nave and chancel church (int. dims 10.4m E-W; 5.4m N-S; ext. dims 12.75m E-W; 6.8-6.9m N-S) survives with walls (H c. 2m; T 0.65m) fairly complete. There is a doorway (Wth 1m), originally with a pointed chamfered arch, and two, two-light windows (Wth 0.8m) in the S wall, but the heads of the windows and central mullions are missing. There is a cusped ogee-headed window with glazing-grooves that has been widened in the W wall, but the E window is destroyed. There is a blocked embrasure towards the E end of the N wall, but no evidence of a window. The font from this church is now in St. Columba’s church in Kells (ME017-044041-). This is a fragment of the lower part of the basin (dims. c. 0.39m) of an octagonal font with ribs at the angles, and an angel's haed and wings on the lower panel (Roe 1968, 68). St. Bridget’s well (ME017-047----) is c. 300m to the NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Situated on a mound (diam. of base c. 4m; H 1m) at the centre of a T-junction on a fairly level landscape and c. 450m S of Martry parish church (ME017-037----). Great crowds are said to have gathered at St Bridget’s Cross on the occasion of the pattern at Martry on February 1st but it had been discontinued for some time (Mason 1814, 1, 95-6; MacNeill 1962, 336-7). The cross is not represented on any map and it is probably eighteenth century in date. In 1985 only the foundation stone was present (SMR file). This is a crudely finished rectangular stone (dims 0.83m x 0.79m) with a mortice (dims 0.22m x 0.16m; D 0.22) on its upper surface. A crude cross was inscribed on its upper surface with the dates ‘August 1885’ and ‘1888’, and also the initials ‘PR’. A limestone cross has now been restored on this base, obscuring these graffiti. The cross (H 1.32m; span 0.68m) is cut square (dims 0.2m x 0.15m) from a single piece of limestone and is set on a two-tier base (lower: dims 0.67m x 0.61m, H 0.17m; upper: dims 0.49m x 0.48m; H 0.15m) with a chamfer on the upper edge of the lower step. It has no inscription. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on a slight rise on a very gentle N-facing slope. This is a raised (H at N: 2.9m), rectangular and grass-covered area (dims 65m E-W; 21m N-S) defined by a severely eroded moat (at S: Wth of top 14m; int. D 1.3m; ext. D 0.4m) on each side, that at N being reduced to a berm (Wth 4m). There may be a causeway towards the W end of the N side. It is overlaid by a NNE-SSW roadway towards the E edge of the platform, and the monument is best preserved at the SE angle which is E of the roadway where the E end of the S side is well preserved and there is an internal bank (Wth of base 6m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.3m), a moat (Wth of top 10.3m; Wth of base 4m; ext. H 1.1m) and an outer bank (Wth of top 3m; ext. H 0.5m). Situated in a gently undulating landscape. Archaeological testing (04E0922) by J. Roynane (2005) at Testing Area 5 of Contract 4 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological material (excavations.ie 2004:1287) that was partially excavated (E003160) by T. Coughlan (2010) as Ballybeg 3 in August 2006 (excavations.ie 2007:1261), although the townland is Martry. An area of almost 700 square metres was opened at the NE edge of the road-take revealing some large ditches and the S edge of a burnt mound, most of which extended outside the excavated area to the N. A square flat-bottomed trough (dims 2.03m NW-SE x 2.05m; D 0.52m) with two fills of black silty clay and heat-shattered stone had an oval pit (dims 1.75m x 1m; D 0.2m), interpreted as a possible roasting pit, just to the SE with the same fill. A sample of ash charcoal from the lower fill of the trough yielded a C14 date of 1600-1431 cal. BC (UBA 12095). There was an oval hearth (dims 0.84m x 0.75m; D 0.07m) just SE of the possible roasting pit, but a hearth (dims 1.2m x 1.15m; D 0.34m) with a plentiful supply of heat-shattered stones was c. 5m to the E of the trough and at the S edge of the burnt mound. A sample of hazel charcoal from this hearth provided a C14 date of 1897-1693 cal. BC (UBA 12096). There were two postholes c. 4m W of the trough and four pits (dims 0.47m x 0.4m; D 0.17m to 1.03m x 0.83m; D 0.06m) were sealed by the S slip of the burnt mound, which manifested as several isolated small spreads (dims 1.15m x 0.8m; T 0.1m to 2.5m x 0.97m; T 0.02m) but most of the mound is probably outside the excavated area. Two parallel N-S ditches (Wth 3.3m; D 0.83m: Wth 2.5m; D 0.6m), 4m apart, are just to the W and medieval or post-medieval in date, while E-W furrows were perpendicular to them. (Coughlan 2010, 5-9) See the attached plan from Coughlan (2010, fig. 5) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 23 March 2022 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) - Martry Mill, mill (water), 1780–1820, Regional interest, registry number 14401714, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=ME®no=14401714. Group of three adjoining two-storey mill buildings, on L-shape plan, built c.1800. Probably built on site of an earlier mill structure. Buildings constructed of limestone rubble with dressed limestone quoins to corners and brick eaves courses. Pitched slate roofs to all structures. Stone surrounds to door and windows of main mill building and intermediate structure with stone sills and replacement timber sash windows. Brick surrounds to openings on eastern-most building. The main two-storey three-bay mill building is located to the west of the complex and runs perpendicular to the River Blackwater and main alignment of mill complex. A working waterwheel (undershot), c. 10-12ft in diameter, constructed of cast-iron with timber is located on the north gable of this structure. Three-bay two-storey building adjoins to west. Central loading bay (full-height) with timber beam and remains of sack-hoist to first floor of this structure. The timber louvred vent in the roof of this structure indicates that it was used as a grain-drying kiln. Stone-lined tailrace, c. 10m in width, headrace with timber and metal sluice gates and stone weir to site. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Martry, about 1 in 10 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
