A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 25m) is depicted only on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘Fort’. A slight rise at the SE angle of a field is the only indication of what was probably a rath. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). A castle at Moylagh (38) in Moylagh parish and Fore barony is depicted as adjacent to the church on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony and parish maps (http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/). It is situated on top of the motte (ME015-033002-), which is at the summit of a NNW-SSE ridge. Only the N wall (H c. 8m) of this building survives, orientated E-W and supported by buttresses. The scar of the roof of a structure attached to the N can be seen in its outer face. Moylagh parish church (ME015-032----) is c. 90m to the N and the settlement (ME015-034----) is just to the E and NE. A bailey may have existed to the NNW, on the ridge between motte and the graveyard church (ME015-032001-), c. 40m distant. The castle (ME015-033001-) is situated on top of the motte. The field system (ME015-034----) is just to the E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). A grass-covered area of about 1.5 ha (c. 4 acres) has relict field banks (Wth c. 4m; H c. 0.5m) creating small plots (dims c. 20m x c. 20m to c. 35m x c. 15m) aligned NE-SW, parallel with the current field walls. Amongst the plots is a single house platform (dims 12m E-W; 5.3m N-S) defined by low scarps. There are some old quarry holes in the area. The parish church of Moylagh (ME015-033001-) and its graveyard are immediately to the SW, and the motte (ME015-033----) is at the S end of the complex with relict field banks connecting with it. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
