Situated on a level landscape. A church at Moyamet is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 256). Ussher (1622) says the church and chapel were repaired (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxiii) but Dopping (1682-5) says the church was ruined since 1641 and the graveyard was not enclosed (Ellison 1972, 10). The parish church of Moymet is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 50m N-S; c. 45m E-W) defined by earthen banks with trees, and it has headstones dating from c. 1772. This is a divided nave (int. dims 12m plus E-W; 5.95m N-S) and chancel (int. dims 6.75m E-W; 5.05m N-S) structure that survives almost complete (H c. 3.5m) except that the W wall and adjacent parts of the long walls are missing (surviving L 20m). A pointed doorway (Wth 1.18m; H 1.81m) with an outer hollow chamfer is towards the W end of the N wall but the stoup is removed from its E jamb internally. A doorway in the S wall opposite is destroyed, but there is evidence of a window embrasure W of this doorway. The single-light cusped ogee-headed window (Wth 0.34m; H 1.13m) under a square hood moulding to the E of the S doorway is mirrored by a less complete one on the N wall. A stairs was added internally to the NE angle of the nave that provided access to the rood-loft, and corbels and beam-holes for the screen are present on the N and S nave walls. A rectangular window in the S wall lit the area behind the screen. A rood screen was essential in this church as there was no chancel arch. There are two window embrasures in the S chancel wall and one in the N wall but little of the dressed stone survives. There is a rectangular aumbry (Wth 0.41m; H 0.38m; D 0.38m) with chamfered edges at the E end of the S wall and there is a statue-niche (Wth 0.45m; H 1.62m; D 0.38m) near it in the E wall. The E wall has a three-light cusped ogee-headed window with open spandrels and a square hood moulding, which can be dated to the early 15th century (O’Neill 2002, 18-30, fig. 44). The castle (ME030-023----) is c. 100m to the SE, the stone house (ME030-023001-) is c. 70m to the SE and the gatehouse (ME030-022----) is c. 90m to the ENE. Located on a level landscape c. 80m N of the tower house (ME030-023----) and the house (ME030-023001-). This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 7.4m E-W; 5.6m N-S) with a vaulted N-S passage (Wth 3.6m) behind a round arch on the N wall, but much of the vault is damaged. A flat-arched doorway in the W wall of the passage leads to a guard room with a N-S barrel-vault and a light in the N wall and another in the S wall. Externally, a flat-arched doorway (Wth 0.78m) in the S wall leads to a newel stairs that rises to the first floor, which has large windows in the N and W walls and a fireplace with two small lights in the E wall. Located on a level landscape. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Sir James Dillon, the first Earl of Roscommon and a Protestant, owned 210 acres at Moymet in Navan barony in 1640, and the property included ‘a Castle, a Church ruinated, a stone house, an open Quarry, and an orchard’ (Simington 1940, 204). This is a tower house of four storeys, with the remains of a stone house (ME030-023001-) c. 15m to the W. The gatehouse (ME030-022----) is 80m to N and the parish church of Moymet (ME030-021----) is 90m to the NW. Immediately to the N of the tower house is a rectangular raised area (dims 12m N-S; 12m E-W; H 0.5-0.8m) and the field system (ME030-024----) was c. 200m to the E. This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims c. 10.75m N-S; 8.05m E-W) with a projecting rectangular tower (dims 4.5m N-S; c. 5m E-W) at the NE angle. The main ground floor chamber has two double-splay loops on the E wall and one on the S. There is a single pointed light at the S end of the W wall but most of this wall and the N wall, and the N-S barrel-vault do not survive. There may have been a projecting tower at the NW angle to accommodate a doorway and stairs. The surviving projecting tower has a destroyed E-W barrel-vault and a light in the E wall at the ground floor together with a broken-out garderobe chute on its S wall. The first floor has a large window in the E wall with a garderobe chamber just N of it. There is a fireplace at the S end of the W wall and a destroyed window in the S wall. The projecting tower has a fireplace in the N wall, a light in the S and a large destroyed window in the E. The second floor of the main chamber has a large window in the E wall, a blocked light and a fragment of a fireplace in the W wall, and a destroyed window in the S wall, while the projecting tower has a large destroyed window in the E wall and a light in the S. The third floor has a window and fireplace in the E wall of the main chamber, a blocked window in the W wall, and a destroyed one in the S. The projecting tower has a blocked window in the N wall and a smaller opening in the E wall. The parapet does not survive. Located on a level landscape. Sir James Dillon, the eldest son of Sir Lucas Dillon of Newtown and Moymet, became the first Earl of Roscommon in 1622 (Conwell 1873, 378-9). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6), the Earl, a Protestant, owned 210 acres at Moymet in Navan barony in 1640, and the property included ‘a Castle, a Church ruinated, a stone house, an open Quarry, and an orchard.’ (Simington 1940, 204). The house was described (Conwell 1873, 369) as ‘122 feet (c. 37m) in length, and 43 feet ( c. 13m) wide, the principal walls being 5.5 feet (c. 1.7m) thick. Seven large windows can still be counted in the southern portion of the ruins’. It survives today as the remains of a barrel-vaulted chamber (surviving L 11.7m E-W; int. Ridge and furrow cultivation is noted in only one of the larger fields, and only one possible house site, visible as a grass-covered platform (dims 7.5m x c. 4m; H 0.3m), is identified.
