Situated on a W-facing slope. A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 60m) is depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Fort’ and it is depicted as an oval hachured feature (dims c. 50m N-S; c. 20m E-W) on the 1912 edition. It was described in 1969 (SMR file) as a raised oval and grass-covered area (dims of top 50m NW-SE; 20m NE-SW) that had been anciently quarried but it was defined by scarps (at SW: Wth 1m; H 0.8m), with an external fosse at SW (Wth of top 4.5m; Wth of base 2.5m; ext. D 0.75m). Its visible profile had been removed by 1995 (OSAP) but it is probably a rath. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 27 August 2019 - ME048-018: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME048-018----. Located on top of a broad hill. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Sir Richard Barnwall of Crickstown (ME039-006----) owned 252 acres at Newcastle in Rathcore parish, and on the premises were ‘one Castle and some Farme houses and Cabbins’ (Simington 1940, 183). Sir Richard also owned land at Possixtowne (180 acres), Johnstowne (Jordanstown) (163 acres), Conellstowne (108 acres), and Kilcorny (100 acres) in the same parish (ibid. 181-5). This is a three-storey tower house (ext. dims 5.55m E-W; c. 6m N-S) that survives complete with an overgrown and obscured parapet and base-batter. It is vaulted over both the ground floor and the first floor and has a semicircular stairs tower projecting from the centre of the E wall. A wall, bonded with the stairs tower extended E and another wall, bonded with the SE angle extended S, creating a bawn of unknown extent which was to the SE of the tower house. A wide carriage doorway is inserted in the N wall at the ground floor, which has a light in a round-headed embrasure in the W wall, a blocked embrasure in the S wall and two blocked embrasures in the E wall, but the original entrance is not identified. There are faint traced of wicker-centring in the N-S barrel-vault. A round-headed doorway leads to the newel stairs at the centre of the E wall, but the steps immediately below the first floor were removed and the space floored in wood at some time. The first floor under a N-S barrel vault is entered by a round-headed doorway from the stairs and has a window embrasure on each wall, but that on the S might have been extended into a doorway. A round-headed doorway in the N wall leads to a garderobe chamber (int. dims 1.45m E-W; 0.6m N-S) that is plastered, suggesting that it may have been used into the eighteenth or nineteenth century as might an inserted corner fireplace at the NE angle. The stairs continue with enlarged lights in the E wall, and a lintelled doorway leads to the second floor chamber (int. dims 4.55m E-W; 4.35m N-S), which has an enlarged window on each wall, that on the S being blocked. A lintelled doorway at the SE angle leads to a chamber (int. dims 1.45m N-S; 0.5m E-W) with a machicolation projecting from the S wall and has a blocked light on the E wall. There is an inserted brick fireplace at the SW angle. The stairs continue to the wall-walk with no lights, but the parapet is overgrown with ivy, and no features can be distinguished, although brick is evident at many points. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on an undulating low-lying landscape. Archaeological testing in advance of the M4 Kinnegad to Kilcock motorway identified a number of hearths and burnt spreads. This was set aside for resolution as Newcastlle 2, which was fully resolved (02E1093) in August 2002. A furnace bottom was in an oval cutting (dims 0.72m x 0.52m; max. D 0.17m) in the subsoil with oxidized sides. It was filled with grey/black sandy clay that had a small amount of slag and a lot of charcoal, which produced a radiocarbon determination of Cal. AD 890-1150. There was an oval pit (dims 1.05m x 0.66m; D 0.22m) nearby with a large amount of slag. Other shallow cuts with oxidised bases are interpreted as the remains of hearths, one of which provided a C14 date of cal. AD 980-1170. The kiln (ME048-034----) is c. 80m to the W. Situated on an undulating low-lying landscape. Archaeological testing in advance of the M4 Kinnegad to Kilcock motorway identified a sub-surface archaeological feature. This was set aside for resolution as a part of Newcastlle 2, which was fully resolved (02E1093) in August 2002. This is a subrectangular cut (dims 3.7m E-W; 1.6m N-S; max. D 0.26m) in the subsoil filled with a partially oxidized base and a yellow/brown silty clay that was largely redeposited natural with some oxidization. There were four unburnt stake holes in the central area and a dense deposit of charcoal at the E end. This was separated by a mixed layer of brown clay and charcoal from another dense charcoal deposit which is interpreted as the roof of the fire-pit of a kiln. It produced a C14 date of Cal. AD 1050-1270. A nearly hearth produced a C14 date of Cal. AD 980-1170. The furnace bottom (ME048-033----) is c. 80m to the E.
