Situated on the W-facing slope of a small hillock. This is a raised and grass-covered D-shaped area (dims 36m NNW-SSE; c. 25m ENE-WSW) with some trees that slopes down to the S (H 1.4m). It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 5.5-6.5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 2-2.2m) SE-W-N, with an outer fosse (at NNW: Wth of top 6.5m; Wth of base 1.5m; ext. D 0.2m) SSW-W-NE. There are many gaps in the bank but the most likely entrance (Wth of base 1.3m) with no causeway is at SW. The monument is truncated by an old quarry at NE with a NNW-SSE road outside it. Just NW of the centre is a rectangular house-site (int. dims 6.1m NE-SW; 4m NW-SE) defined by slight earthen banks (Wth 4-5m; H 0.2-0.3m) but no entrance is visible. Located on a slight rise in an undulating low-lying landscape. This is a slightly raised and circular grass-covered area (diam. 36m E-W; 34.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (at N: Wth of base 5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.2m) largely reduced to a scarp (at S: Wth 4.3m; H 1.6m), with the remnants of a fosse (Wth of base 2.6m; D 0.2m) at N, and a berm (at S: Wth 3-4m) at other points. The original entrance is not identified, but there is a rectangular, grass-covered house (int. dims 7.7m E-W; 5.8m N-S) at the centre. It is defined by broad low earthen banks (Wth 3.5-5.5m; H 0.3-0.5m) with a wide entrance gap (Wth 2m) at E. A small mound (diam. 4m; H 0.2m), probably a detached fragment, is 2m to the N. Situated in a hollow in a low-lying undulating landscape. It is not depicted on any OS map but is visible on aerial photographs (GSIAP: N 288, 289) from the 1970s and later series. This is a rectangular grass-covered area (dims c. 30m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by wide flat-bottomed moats (Wth of top 12-19m; Wth of base 8-10m; int. D 0.5m; ext. D 1-1.5m) on every side except the N where the moat has been removed by an E-W field bank. There is a large but shallow and grass-covered quarry (dims 19m E-W; c. 10m N-S; D 0.5-1m) in the interior, but there is no visible entrance. A series of rectangular fields (dims. up to c. 60m by c. 40m) defined by banks, scarps and ditches is attached to motte and bailey (ME022-010----) on the N side and covers about 18 acres (c. 7 ha). There are smaller fields closer to the motte, and within the fields are the mounds (ME022-008----; ME022-009----) and the moated site (ME022-006----). Situated in a gently undulating landscape. Killallon was known as Killamlan, and in 1214-5 William de Tuite reportedly found gold there (Orpen 1907, 241). The motte is a subcircular flat-topped mound (dims of top 17.5m E-W; 15m N-S; diam. of base 40m N-S; 36m E-W; H 7m at NW to 14m at SE) with a rectangular, grass-covered bailey (int. dims c. 40m NW-SE; c. 40m NE-SW), defined by earthen banks (at NW: Wth of base 15m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.6m) or scarps, attached to the NW. It is associated a field system (ME022-007----) just to the NW. The castle site (ME022-011----) is just N of the bailey and Killallon parish church (ME022-012----) is c. 90m to the NE. A castle is depicted as a tower on a hill in the vicinity of the parish church of Killallon on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map of Fore (http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Christopher Earle of Fingal owned 550 acres there, including ‘a castle with a bawn, a ruinate church with six cabins a Corne Mill and a Tuck Mill’ (Simington 1940, 259). It is not indicated on any ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Just north of the bailey (ME022-010----) and situated on a rise in an undulating landscape, a length of masonry wall has been exposed in digging, and this is believed to be the remains of the castle. The motte (ME022-010----) is c. 75m to the S and the church (ME022-012----) is c. 100m to the ESE.
