Situated on a NE-facing slope and in a part of Oldcastle townland that is called Portshanmore – the ‘big old bog’. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 32m E-W; 30.5m N-S) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth c. 4-5m; int. int. H c. 0.3-0.6m; ext. H 1.7-2.3m) with some bushes that is incorporated into a field bank N-SE, and the remains of an outer fosse (Wth of top 7m; Wth of base 2m; ext. D 0.4m) SW-N. The original entrance is probably that (Wth of base 1.8m) at ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on top of a broad hill within the town of Oldcastle. The church of Coul is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 260). Ussher (1622) lists a church at Oldcastle but provides no information (Erlington 1847-64, 1, cxviii). At the Suppression (1540) the church of Oldcastell was worth £6 to the abbey of Fore, Co. Westmeath (White 1943, 273). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Lord Dunsany owned 360 acres at Oldcastle in 1640 where the old castle and church are listed (Simington 1940, 268). Dopping's Visitation Book 1682- 5 notes that St, Bridget’s church of Oldcastle or Clotyn was in ruins since 1641 (O'Connell 1965, 171 2), but it was enclosed (Ellison 1975, 8). The present Church of Ireland church was built in 1816 (Lewis 1837, vol. 2, 448) and is on the on the site of the medieval parish church of Oldcastle or Clolyne. The church site is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 45m E-W; c. 38m N-S) defined by masonry walls. Almost 60 memorials from the church and graveyard have been published, about half of which date from the 18th century (ffolliott and Jones (1968). Outside the church there is an unfinished disc-headed cross (H 0.5m; Wth 0.72m; T 0.14m) with the top part of the shaft missing, which probably led to the work being abandoned. The arms are short (L 0.1-0.14m; H c. 0.2m) and a large boss was being excavated on one face of the stone. The cross has a collar (Wth 0.4m; H 0.1m) and a shaft (dims 0.25m x 0.17m; visible H 0.36m) below. It may be 17th century in date. The memorial of Philip Tuite from Drumsawry dated 1692 (Ball-Wright 1908-09), which was in the church at Lough Crew (ME015-027003-), is now set into the inside of the N wall of the tower at the ground floor. It is a sandstone slab (H 1.88m; Wth 0.8-0.9m) with the Latin inscription incised in roman lettering under a shield in relief that is quartered and retains traces of blue and red colours. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). The site of the medieval parish church of Oldcastle or Cloyle (ME009-018----) is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 45m E-W; c. 38m N-S) defined by masonry walls. Almost 60 memorials from the church and graveyard have been published, about half of which date from the 18th century (ffolliott and Jones 1968). The disc-headed cross (ME009-018002-) is outside the church on the E side. There are two heavy recumbent graveslabs close to the S wall of the graveyard. The E one (2.24m x 1.05m; T 0.1-0.13m) has one end of the stone (L 1.28m) reserved for the crest, and there is an inscription with the date 1727. The crest is heater-shaped (max. Wth 0.37m; H 0.48m), with a chevron and three lions rampant, two above and one below. About 10m to the W and just inside the S wall of the graveyard is another heavy recumbent stone (2.3m x 1.15m; T 0.15m). The crest (H 0.57m; Wth c. 0.4m) is very worn. It has a two lions on top, two on the bottom and a line of three bells or mushrooms across the centre. There is an inscription, incised in cursive beneath this but it is almost completely worn away and illegible, though likely dating to the 18th century. Archaeological testing (03E0105) by C. Read on plots immediately to the N of the graveyard identified no related material but there was a post-medieval well (excavations.ie 2003:1443). Further testing (03E0598) by E. O’Sullivan on the site of a single house c. 35m N of the graveyard at the closest point identified no related material (excavations.ie 2003:1444). Archaeological testing (05E0165) by P. D. Sweetman immediately S of the graveyard produced no evidence that burial ever extended outside the graveyard in this direction (excavation.ie 2005:1228). Translation (by the late Sir Edmund T. Bewley) The monument of Sir Philip Tuite, lord of Fermor and Newcastle, which James Tuite, son of the deceased, erected at his own expense in perpetual memory of his father, and caused to be inscribed with the following lines. AD 1692. Here lies Philip, cast down by cruel death, whom too unfriendly fate carried off before is time: whom valour exalted above the obscure realms of the common herd, and faith, the not unworthy associate of valour: whom labour and never ceasing watchfulness in all things ofttimes put on a par with the highest in the land. He, the son of so great a father, and the survivor of this calamity, erected this tomb at his own expense. He died … 1688, aged 48 years. It is defined by a fosse (at N: Wth of top 7m; ext. D 1.5m) surviving against the bailey W-ENE and with a stone wall at the base elsewhere. There is a raised crescent-shaped bailey (dims of top 35m E-W; 16m N-S) planted in trees and defined by scarps (at N: H 2m) attached W-ENE. There is a subrectangular enclosure (int. dims c. 4.5m N-S; c. 5m E-W) defined by low earthen banks (Wth 1.5-4m; H 0.2-0.7m) with an entrance at W on the summit of the motte, but this is known to be a modern feature. Situated in a level landscape c. 5m E of a canalised NNE-SSW stream. Archaeological monitoring (12E0387) of a sewer pipe by B. O’Hara (excavations.ie 2013:116) identified a spread of broken and burnt stone that was fully excavated under the same licecne. A layer of broken and burnt stone (diam. 6.6-6.72m; max. D 0.49m) was partially covered by silts and lay over a subcircular, straight-sided trough (diam. 1.6-2m; max. D 0.25m) with a flat base cut in the subsoil. The trough contained two fills with different quantities of heat-shattered stone, and a sample of cherry charcoal from the base produced a C14 date of 2111-1887 cal. BC. A second subcircular trough (diam. 1.5-1.77m; max. D 0.32m) with two stones set in its rounded base was nearby and had a single fill of silty clay with heat-shattered stone. A sample of willow from this fill produced a C14 date of 2291-2050 cal. BC. No artefacts were recovered from the monument. Located on a level landscape. A magnetometry survey (12R0045) by J. Bonsall (2015) provided evidence of an enclosure (int. diam. c. 45m) defined by a fosse that is most prominent (Wth c. 5m) NW-NE but which can also be traced NE-SW while the remainder of its course is outside the development property to the W. There was slighter evidence of a second enclosure (diam. c. 35m) attached to the N. Archaeological testing (12E0023) of the area (c. 1.4 ha) by M. Ó Droma following the geophysical survey uncovered a number of pits, post-holes and linear features which may relate to the enclosure (excavations.ie 2012:472), but further details are not available. Located on a level landscape. Archaeological testing (12E0023) by M. Ó Droma of a large area (c. 1.4 ha) for the purposes of a proposed development revealed evidence of a fulacht fia (excavations.ie 2012:472). In Area 1 (dims 30m x 20m) a denuded horseshoe-shaped mound of broken and burnt stone (dims 13m x 6m; D 0.1m) overlay a rectangular trough (dims 3m x 1m) filled with peat and heat-affected stone which was situated between the horns of the mound. In addition there were at least three pits (diam. 0.6-1m) filled largely with heat-shattered stone within 5m of the trough. A second spread of burnt stone and charcoal (dims 7m x 4m) located 9m WNW of the fulacht fia was accompanied by another pit (diam. 1m) and could constitute a second fulacht fia. A magnetometry survey (12R0045) by J. Bonsall (2015) that took place ahead of testing recorded numerous archaeological features, particularly an enclosure (ME009-116----) but evidence for the fulacht fia was quite weak in the magnetometry data, possibly owing to the effects of the gley soils. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
