Situated on a rise towards the bottom of a SE-facing slope. This is a raised and circular grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 38.4m N-S: 36m E-W) that slopes down slightly to the NE (H 0.8m). It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 5m at NE to 9.5m at SW; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.7m at SW to 2.5m at NE) planted with deciduous trees. There is no visible fosse but there is an entrance ramp (Wth of base 4.3m) at E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Located towards the bottom of a SE-facing slope and at the crest of a steep slope down to a small canalised SW-NE stream which is c. 50m to the SE. It is represented as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 50m) on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘fort’ and as a circular hachured feature on the 1912 edition. It was removed in the 1960s (SMR file) but was visible in 1968 as a subcircular area (dims c. 27m E-W; c. 24m N-S) with a portion of bank (Wth of base 3.7m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 3.4m) surviving NW-NE, and with a possible entrance (Wth of base 2.8m) at ENE. The visible remnant had been removed by 1995 (OSAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on top of and on the slopes of a low rise on the floor of the valley of the River Blackwater, with a WNW-ESE section of the stream c. 170m to the N. Archaeological testing (04E1058) by G. McLoughlin (2005) at Testing Area 7 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features in a fairly limited area (dims c. 40m E-W; c. 30m N-S) that were completely excavated (E003181) by S. Rathbone in January - February 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1375) as Pottlebane 1 when a large area of c. 7000 square metres was opened. Eight small pits and a large pit or hollow were excavated. The hollow (dims 5.4m N-S; 4.4m E-W; max. D 0.42m) had a hearth (dims 0.64m x 0.54m; T 0.1m) at its W edge and a spread (dims 1m x 0.8m; T 0.06m) of burnt pink sand with charcoal and some burnt bone. A sample of hazel charcoal from this produced a C14 date of 2136-1960 Cal. BC (Beta 247192) placing it in the Early Bronze Age. The hollow was filled with grey/brown sandy clay from which a body sherd of prehistoric pottery was derived. This layer was cut and filled with orange/brown sandy clays from which a chert blade and two chert flakes were recovered. Just E of the hollow a linear cut (dims 1.14m x 0.26m; D 0.12m) was filled with a loose sandy silt from which another a neck sherd of prehistoric pottery vessel was recovered. The pits (dims 1.4m x 0.8m; D 0.2m to 1.8m x 1.16m; D 0.2m) are rather dispersed (c. 12-30m apart) and one produced a sherd of prehistoric pottery while another yielded a C14 date of 889-1022 Cal. AD (Beta 247190) from a sample of oak charcoal. Another pit (1.56m x 1.24m; D 0.34m) had six fills, and the basal layer of brown / black sandy silt had frequent charcoal inclusions, and is interpreted a hearth. A fragment of oak charcoal from this layer produced a C14 date of Cal. AD 695-976 (Beta 247193). Three smaller pits (dims 0.75m x 0.66m to 2m x 1.06m; D 0.28m) at the SE base of the rise had sandy silt fills with frequent charcoal inclusions. A few burnt grains are associated with them and a sample of hazel charcoal from one provided a C4 date of 2136-1906 Cal. BC (Beta 247191). Two periods of casual, temporary activity dating to the Early Bronze Age and the Early medieval are indicated. Rathbone in February 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1376) as Pottlebane 2. A group of four pits (dims 0.34m; D 0.09m to 1.61m x 0.58-0.82m; D 0.26-0.38m) had each a single fill of silty or sandy clays with frequent stone inclusions and flecks of charcoal. The smallest pit had a small quantity of the cremated remains of an adolescent. Another had charred grain that produced a C14 date of 991-1157 cal. AD (Beta 247189), but no artefacts were recovered from any of the pits. McLoughlin (2005) at Testing Area 7 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features that were partially excavated (E003179) by D. Gallagher in February 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1377) as Area A of Pottlebane 3. A spread of broken and burnt stone (dims 12m NW-SE; 8m NE-SW; D 0.03-0.34m) and a detached smaller spread (diam. 3m; D 0.25m) were excavated, but the larger spread extended outside the road-take at NE. An oval trough (dims 3.05m E-W; 1m N-S; D 0.35m) which was filled with a loose, brown/black silt with frequent heat-shattered stone and frequent inclusions of oak, hazel and maloideae charcoal. A sample of hazel charcoal from the trough produced a C14 date of 3770-3647 Cal. BC (Beta 247182) placing it firmly in the Neolithic. There were two small pits (dims 1.3m x 1m; D 0.28m: 0.8m x 0.58m; D 0.52m) c. 15m S of the trough filled with brown / grey silts or gravels with frequent charcoal inclusions, and a sample of hazel from one produced a C14 date of 404-207 cal. BC (Beta 247181). Two other pits could be associated with the fulacht fia. (Gallagher et al. 2008) See the attached plan from Gallagher et al. Situated in a low-lying marshy area adjacent to a SSW-NNE canalized section of a stream that flows N into the River Blackwater. Archaeological testing (04E1058) by G. McLoughlin (2005) at Testing Area 7 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features that were fully excavated (E003179) by D. Gallagher in February 2007 (excavations.ie 2007:1377) as Area B of Pottlebane 3. An oval kiln (dims 2.7m x 2m; D 0.38m) had a primary fill of a loose yellow/orange silty sand with charcoal inclusions including cereals. A sample of charred barley yielded a C14 date of 441-652 cal. AD (Beta 247187). This was beneath a similar fill in which cremated bone as well as charred cereals were present. A sample of charred barely from this produced a radiocarbon date of 441-652 cal. AD (Beta 247186). A third fill of brown/grey silty sand also had cremated bone and charred cereal grains and a sample of oak from it provided a date of 422-596 cal. AD (Beta 247188). The fifth fill was a dark brown/black silty sand with frequent charcoal inclusions of oak, hazel, ash and maloideae as well as cereals including oats, hulled barley, wheat, docs, and fescues, as well as uncharred remains. A sample of hazel provided a C14 date of 546-656 cal. AD (Beta 247184). The uppermost fill was a grey/brown silty sand with frequent stones and fewer charcoal inclusions. The charcoal was from the usual species and a sample of hazel was dated to 539-655 cal. AD (Beta 247185). An oval pit (dims 3m x 2.05m; D 0.64m) c. 15m to the S had two fills of brown/black clayey silt beneath a brown / grey coarse sand with moderate charcoal and frequent stone inclusions. It contained the usual mix of wood and cultivated cereals. Surprisingly, no C14 dates are available for this material.
