An area of about 10 acres (c. 4 ha) has relict field banks and ditches defining fairly large fields between parallel E-W banks (c. 50m apart) with some running N-S. Towards the S edge of the area there is a semicircular area defined by a scarp and ditches, and there are also two relict ponds. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Located on a level landscape. The fortified parish church of Rathmore is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 60m E-W; c. 50m N-S) defined by masonry walls. A church at Rathmore is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 256). The manor of Rathmore was held by the Verdon family at the end of the 14th century but it passed by marriage to Sir John Cruise, who possessed it in 1406. Through the marriage of his daughter Mary with Sir Thomas Plunkett, the third son of Christopher Plunkett of Rathregan, it passed into the hands of the Plunketts, and this family held it into the 17th century when it passed to the family of Bligh. The present church was built in the 15th century, but the foundations of a narrower church were encountered in conservation works (Leask 1933, 156). The porch on the N side of the nave was added in 1519 by Sir Christopher Plunkett and his wife, Catherine Preston, according to an inscription incorporated in it (ibid. 153-4). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel as in ruins (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxi). A list of pastors extends to 1678, suggesting it was used until then, after which Rathmore parish was united with Athboy. According to Dopping’s Visitation (1682-5) the church was dedicated to St. Lawrence, and this dedication is recorded as early as 1406 in a patent roll of Henry IV when Thomas Fourneys was rector (Pers. Com. Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich, 05/05/2021). The church was unrepaired according to Dopping, although the walls were standing and the font was present, but no comment is made about the graveyard (Ellison 1972, 12). The church was conserved in the 1930s (Leask 1933) and it is now a National Monument (Harbision 1970, 190). The church survives almost complete, and is a divided nave (int. dims c. 13.1m E-W; c. 7m N-S) and chancel (int. dims c. 11.75m E-W; c. 7m N-S) structure, although the chancel arch (Wth 2.77m) is destroyed. The nave and chancel were constructed separately as part of a single project. There is a belfry tower (int. dims c. 2.1m x c. 2.1m; H c. 12m) attached to the W end of S nave wall, whose belfry stage with single plain opes at E and W and two pointed openings at N and S may be a later addition. The sacristy (int. dims c. 5.35m E-W; c. 3.35m N-S) is a three-storey building vaulted over the ground floor and attached to the N wall of the chancel. A mural stairs from the ground floor in its W wall leads to a priest’s dwelling overhead, with rectangular windows in the N and E walls and a hagioscope on the S wall, providing a view of the altar. From the S end of the W wall at the first floor a mural stairs mounts to the second floor, which is lit by small rectangular windows in the N and E walls. The floor of the second floor was supported on beams set directly into the N and S walls. The W window of the church does not survive, but the nave has pointed chamfered doorways (Wth 1.03m) towards the W end of the N and S walls, that at the N with the porch (int. dims 2.12m N-S; 1.42m E-W) which was added in 1519, although only part of the W wall with its dedicatory Latin inscription in gothic lettering on a memorial plaque (Wth 0.98m x 0.38m) survives. There are two windows in the S nave wall, but only one, of two lights, in the N wall. The nave windows are all robbed. A mural stairs rising eastwards in the N wall gave access to a rood loft over the easternmost windows of the nave, evidenced by three beam-slots in the N and S walls and a window in the S wall. From the loft a newel stairs continued in the N wall to the wall-walk, which was continuous around the nave and chancel, interrupted only by the belfry tower, but only traces of the fortifications survive. The chancel has a three-light decorated window in a pointed embrasure in the E wall with three cusped ogee-headed lights of equal height and further decoration above. Externally three crowned heads act as the stops on the hood moulding. There are twin-light cusped ogee-headed windows at the W end of the N and S walls of the chancel, both with square hood mouldings, that at S being blocked by the Bligh memorial. There is a smaller ogee-headed window towards the E end of the S wall, together with a triple sedellia that has fan-vaulting in three bays in its ceiling, and a piscina. The altar is attached to the E wall, and some side-panels decorated with ecclesiastics and eight heraldic shields, including those of Plunkett, Fitzgerald, Talbot, Eustace, Bellew, Birmingham and Fleming, are present. The stem (diam. 0.38m; H 0.55m) of a highly decorated font was in the church until it was stolen but quickly recovered in May 2013, and it is not present at the moment, although part of the bowl is affixed to the N wall of the nave. The eight panels of the stem depict the baptism of Christ along with ecclesiastics and saints in ogee-headed niches (Roe 1968, 92-99). The double effigy (dims 2.15m x 1.15m) of a lady and her knight is reconstructed in the sacristy. It is damaged and the inscription on its chamfered edge is too poor to read, but it is probably a representation of Mary Cruise and Sir Thomas Plunkett (d. 1471) (FitzGerald 1908, 429; Hunt 1974, 211-12). The graveslab (dims 2.07m x 1.08m) of Lady Ann Marwood (d. 1485) and Sir Alexander Plunkett (d. 1503) is in front of the sedillia. The graveslab (dims 2.04m x 0.91m) of Sir Christopher Plunkett (d. 1531) and Katherine Preston is a large stone with a stepped Calvary, the symbols of the Passion and two heraldic shields. It is adjacent the N end of the altar. The Bligh chest tomb is reconstructed in the SW angle of the chancel. The slab (max. surviving dims 1.45m x 0.86m) is broken and commemorates John Bligh who obtained the lordship of Rathmore in 1657 and died in 1666. A unique stone is the labyrinth stone (dims 0.45m x 0.37m; T 0.16m), one of the few such representations in Ireland, and now on the N wall of the nave. Outside the N wall of the church is a cross erected by Sir Christopher Plunkett and his wife, Katherine Preston, in 1519. It consists of the base (dims 0.6m x 0.5m; H 0.33m) with an inscription and parts of the lower shaft (dims 0.22m x 0.15m; H 0.44m) with three figures in niches, and upper shaft (dims 0.32m x 0.2m; H 0.32m) with raised mouldings that might be from another cross (King 1984, 101-02). The slab is broken (max. surviving dims 1.45m x 0.86m) and commemorates John Bligh, who obtained the lordship of Rathmore in 1657 and died in 1666. Above it and blocking a double-light window is the memorial (Wth 0.92m; H 1.78m) of Thomas Bligh (d. 1775). (Leask 1933, 164) It is described by FitzGerald (1908, 438-40) as: This slab, of which less than half now remains, lies on a foundation of mason-work at the butt of the south wall inside the ruins below the built-up window, containing the modern Bligh monument, the inscription on which is given on P 115 of vol. 3 of the Journal. At the top of the recumbent slab is a crest and a shield containing two coats-of-arms impaled, viz: In the dexter half: ‘Azure, a griffin sergeant or, between three crescents argent’, for Bligh. In the sinister half: ‘Argent, three bars and a canton gules.’ for Fuller. The crest is the upper half of a griffin. Of the inscription, which is in raised slender Roman capitals, that portion on the left half of the slab alone remains, and even then many of the letter are illegible. It has appeared on p 155 vol., 3 of the Journal in a quite unintelligible form, and should have run thus: IOANNES BLIGH ARM / SOLY NVPER QUA / ADIACENTIS / IAM VERE / A SVIS POS / POSSIDETVR / TIS QVIPPE / CONTENTVS / MAM HANC / CVLAM FOELICE O RI / SAPIA GVIELMO PA / COMIT / CATHERINA / DVPLICI NOMIN / FVLLER PATER / RE LA / PATER GVIEL / LIMERICENO / COPO EC / QVORUM A / FILIUS / ANT. The ‘Peerages’ state that the above-named John Bligh was a citizen of London, and son of William Bligh of Plymouth, and that he was the founder of the Bligh family in Ireland. He was employed as an agent to the adventurers for the estates forfeited by the Rebellion of 1641, and in that capacity went over to Ireland in the time of Oliver Cromwell’s government, when he also became an adventurer himself by subscribing £600, and, among other lands, obtained the lordship of Rathmore in 1657, which was confirmed to his son Thomas under the Acts of Settlement in 1668. In the first Parliament after the Restoration he was returned member for Athboy. He died in the year 1666, and by Catherine, his wife – sister to William Fuller, Bishop of Lincoln, translated from the Bishopric of Limerick (1663-67) – he had Thomas, his only son, and six daughters. It is not present at the moment while its future safety is considered, but a fragment of the bowl depicting two angles is attached to the N wall of the nave. In the sacristy of the fortified parish church of Rathmore (ME024-017001-) is reconstructed the double effigy (dims 2.15m x 1.15m) of a lady and her knight. It is damaged and the inscription on its chamfered edge is too poor to read, but it is probably a representation of Mary Cruise and Sir Thomas Plunkett (d. 1471). (FitzGerald 1908, 425-31; Leask 1933, 161-3; Hunt 1974, 211-12) It is described by Hunt (1974) as follows but the surrounds are now attched to the altar in the chancel: Standing in the sacristy of the ruined church built probably by Sir Thomas Plunket in the mid-fifteenth century is a double altar tomb, with the figures of the founders carved in high relief. The mensa slab is unfortunately very much broken and defaced. The knight is armed in a bascinet and his head rests upon a cushion. The blind visor is raised and the bottom edge of the visor and the top of the face-opening above the eyes are both pointed. The lower borders of the cheek-pieces are drawn in slightly. The position of the visor pins is much higher than is the case with those of the Ossory effigies; here they are level with the ears. The shoulders and neck are defended by a pisane, its edge falling in a semi-circle on the breast. There are besagews with raised centres on the shoulders. These are situated slightly more towards the front than in the case of the Ossory type. The body defence is a pair of plates of many lames to the hips. The skirt of the habergeon appears below it to the fork. The arms and legs are of plate. The vambraces show the hinges, the cowters have roundels and the plates encircling the joint are angular and not flat as in the Ossory type, which would make the praying position of the hands difficult to depict. There are gauntlets on the hands, with short bell cuffs of one piece with the metacarpal plates. The legs are of plate, with poleyns of simple angular form inverted above and below, and with articulating plates also above and below. The joints of the cuisses are clearly shown both inside and outside. The graves have a slight median ridge. The sabatons are the usual lamed form and the feet rest upon a dog. The sword hangs from a diagonal belt at the waist. Its pommel is missing, and it has a straight cross drooping sharply at the ends. The lady’s gown is very full in the skirt, which is indicated by the usual vertical folds, while the bodice is so tight at the front that it is provided with a deep vent to the middle of the abdomen below the belt. The vent is bordered with a broad band representing some contrasting material such as velvet, and unlike similar vents of the fourteenth century was closed, presumably by a lace and not by buttons. About the waist is a belt decorated with S’s in relief upon it. The feet in pointed shoes rest upon a cushion. Most of the upper part of the body and arm has been destroyed and the whole slab has been very roughly repaired with modern cement. There is a very fragmentary inscription round the edge of the slab, but unfortunately this in no way helps to identify those whom the slab commemorates. That it probably commemorates Sir Thomas Plunket, died 1471, and his wife Marion Cruise, we can only presume from the coats of arms on the tomb-front, which has now been rebuilt against the wall in the position of the ancient altar. 200b Tomb-surrounds Long sides The two sides were evidently comprised of niches of the type found also at Killeen (190), Duleek (186), and Dunsany (187) in the same county. They are of foliate above with elaborate cusping below. In the spandrels above them are coats of arms, only three of which remain on the side-panels. The coats of arms on the desxter side have the Instruments of the Passion, and the second coat has fretty for Bellew, per pale indented with a border for Bermingham. The sinister shield has the arms of Plunket, Cusack and Cruise (?). In the half-spandrel on the sinister end is a small demi-figure of an angel with outspread wings holding a shield bearing a cross. 22c South end. The southern end-slab has three similar niches containing figures of saints within them. On the dexter is a bishop with an out-turned crozier, perhaps St. Patrick; in the central nice there is an archbishop with a cross-staff (St. Thomas?), and on the sinister side, St Bridget with an out-turned crozier in her right hand and holding a book in her left. In the spandrels above are two shields bearing 1. A mitre pierced by two swords, referring to St. Thomas below, and 2 A shield with vair, a chief chequy for Fleming. 200d North end. The north end-slab has three similar niches, the central one with a figure of St. Lawrence, to whom the church was dedicated, the grid-iron in his right hand and a book in his left, and vested as a deacon. He is flanked by two angels in albs swinging censers. The shields above them bear the arms 1 Plunket impaling Hollywood 2 FitzGerald or Eustace impaling Talbot or Rochfort. The style of the carving is pedestrian and dull, though competent. It is evidently from the same workshop as the companion tomb at Duleek (186). The graveslab (dims 2.04m x 0.91m) of Sir Christopher Plunkett (d. 1531) and Katherine Preston is a large stone with a stepped Calvary and the symbols of the Passion and two heraldic shields. It is adjacent the N end of the altar at Rathmore church (ME024-017001-). (FitzGerald 1908, 434-5; Leask 1933, 163) It is described by FitzGerlad (1908) as: The inscription in full reads thus (in gothic lettering): Hic iacent Cristoforus / Plunket de Rathmore miles, cum domina Kathrine Preston uxore sua, qui / obiit V die mensis mareii / anno domini MDXXXI, et dicta Katrina obit ---- die mensis ---- anno domini MD ---quorum animavus propicetur (Deus). This Sir Christopher Plunkett was the eldest son of Sir Alexander Plunkett, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, whose tomb-slab has been described above. His wife, was Catherine Preston, daughter of Robert, 1st Viscount Gormanston, and sister of Ili\abeth, who was married to Sir Thomas FitzGerald, Knt. The graveslab (dims 2.07m x 1.08m) of Lady Ann Marwood (d. 1485) and Sir Alexander Plunkett (d. 1503) is on the ground in front of the sedillia at Rathmore church (ME024-017001-). (FitzGerald 1908-09, 432-4; Leask 1933, 163) It is described by FitzGerald (1908-09, 432-4) as: This large slab lies sunk in the ground, close to the south wall at the foot of the recess into which the sides of the altar-tomb are built as described above. The centre of the slab is quite plain, though w well-preserved black-letter inscription relief, runs round the edge of the slab. With the contractions expanded, the reading is: (in gothic script) Hic iacent Alexander Plunket de Rathmore miles quoundam / cancellarius hibernie cum domina Ana Mawreward uxore sua, qui obiit x die Mensis Augustii anno domini MCCCCCIII, et / dicta Ana obiit secundo die mensis Aiprilis anno domini MCCCC / LXXXV quorum animabus propicietur Deus amen. Miserere nostri, Domine, miserere nostri, Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos quemadmodum speravimus in te. Our member, Fr. Carrigan, who kindly supplied the reading of the prayer in this inscription, has also furnished me with a translation. It runs thus: Here lies Sir Alexander Plunkett, Knight, of Rathmore, formerly Chancellor of Ireland, together with the lady Anne Marward his wife, who (i.e. he) died on the 10th day of the month of August, in the year of our Lord 1503; and the said Anne died on the 2nd day of April in the year of our Lord 1485; on whose souls may God have mercy. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us. Be thy mercy done unto us, O Lord, as we have hoped in Thee. Sir Alexander Plunkett, of Rathmore, was the second son of Sir Thomas Plunkett, and succeeded to the family estates on the death of his elder brother Edmund, probably about the year 1494. On the inner face of the W wall of the N porch at Rathmore parish church (ME024-017----) is a dedicatory plaque (Wth 0.98m; H 0.38m) commemorating in Latin its construction in 1519 at the behest of Sir Christopher Plunkett and his wife, Catherine Preston. (FitzGerald 1908, 34-6; Leask 1933, 154) It is described by FitzGerald (1908, 34-6) as: The mural slab measures 37 inches by 15 inches by 5 inches thick. The inscription is incised ‘black-letter’, and is full of contractions, which being expanded it reads as follows: Orate pro animabus Cristofori Plunkett de Rathmore, millitis et Katrine / Preston uxoris cius, qui crucem lapideam infra villami stam ante cimite / rium construccerunt, et porticum istum, et omnibus ante crucem predictam / dicentibus Pater Noster et Ave Maria pro animabus dictorum Cristoferi et Katrine et parentum suorum, concessum est ducenti dies indulgencie / per V episcopes in concilio provinciali totiens quotiens perpetuis temporivus duraturis Anno DominI MCCCCCXIX. Translation: Pray for the souls of Sir Christopher Plunkett, Knight, of Rathmore, and of Katherine Preston, his wife, who erected the stone cross before the burial ground within this town(land), and this porch; and to all saying an Our Father and a Hail Mary, before the said cross, for the souls of the said Christopher and Katherine and of their parents, two hundred days of indulgence have been granted by five bishops, in Provincial Council, as often as they shall say them, for ever. The manor of Rathmore was held by the de Verdon family at the end of the 14th century but it passed by marriage to Sir John Cruise, who possessed it in 1406. Through the marriage of his daughter Mary with Sir Thomas Plunkett, the third son of Christopher Plunkett of Rathregan, it passed into the hands of the Plunketts, and this family held it into the 17th century when it passed to the family of Bligh. In the Civil Survey (1654-6) Robert Plunkett possessed the entire parish of Rathmore in 1640 and on the premises there were 'two roofed castles, a quarry and some cabins' (Simington 1940 212-13). However, the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map of Lune depicts only one structure at Rathmore (http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/). The Plunketts probably built the tower house in the 15th century. It is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 11.45m NE-SW; 9.4m NW-SE) of four storeys built into the N side of the motte (ME024-018002-). There are two NW-SE barrel-vaults over the first floor, and access to each ground floor chamber must have been by trapdoor through the wooden floors evidenced by some corbels, although embrasures in the SW wall are now broken out. From the first floor a newel stairs in the E angle gives access to the upper floors from the NE chamber, and a mural stairs in the SE wall leads from the SW chamber to the same newel stairs. The newel stairs projects (dims 6.2m NE-SW; 1.4m NW-SE) from the E end of the SE wall, and the original entrance is at the S end of this projection from the top of the motte (ME024-018002-). From the entrance lobby a mural stairs rises southwards in the SE wall but only the newel stairs at the E angle survived to upper levels, and this fell c. 2014. From the entrance lobby a pointed doorway leads to the second floor hall (int. dims 7.9m NE-SW; 5.55m NW-SE), which has large window openings in the NE and NW walls and a garderobe at the W end of the NW wall. Timber battened double doors with strap hinges, set in pointed arch opening with ashlar limestone dressings. Graveyard to site. Ashlar limestone piers with cast-iron double gates.
