The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 10 July 2007 Raised rectangular area defined by scarps (dims. 35m WNW-ESE, 32m NNE-SSW) with wide external fosse. Outer fosse at E side and stream adjacent to W. No visible entrance.

Situated in a gently undulating landscape. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E0472) by E. Cotter of Testing Area 11 of Contract 1 prior to the construction of the M3 motorway identified archaeological features (excavations.ie: 2004:1333) that were fully excavated (E003039) by S. D. Elder as Raynestown 2 in July-August 2006 (excavations.ie 2006:1631). A total of 16 pits (dims 0.52m x 0.24m; D 0.08m; to 3.3m x 2m; D 0.32m), five post-holes and a stake-hole were excavated in a concentrated area (dims c. 12m x c. 9m) of the subsoil, with some outlying pits. The pits were circular or oval, but one rectangular pit (dims 1.78m x 1.2m; D 0.24m) could have served as a trough. It cut the edge of a circular pit (dims 2.02m x 1.66m; D 0.56m) just to its SE, while a short channel (Wth 0.77m; D 2m; L 1.32m) connected it with another oval pit (1.5m x 1.14m; D 0.56m) to the SW. The lower fills were usually silty or sandy while the upper fills contained substantial quantities of burnt stone and charcoal flecks. A sample of hawthorn charcoal from one of the other pits produced a C14 date of 2343-2041 cal. BC, placing it at the start of the Early Bronze Age. One artefact, a bipolar flint flake, was recovered together with some bones of cattle and pig. Although no mound of broken and burnt stone is present the occurrence of this material in the fills of the pits is sufficient to identify this as a truncated fulacht fia. Situated on a natural gravel rise in a gently undulating landscape. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E0472) by E. Cotter (2004) at Testing Area 11 of Contract 1 prior to the construction of the M3 motorway identified a small enclosure (excavations.ie: 2004:1333) that was fully excavated (E003038) by S. D. Elder as Raynestown 1 (Elder et al. 2009) in July-September 2006 together with nearby kilns (ME044-071001-) and evidence of habitation (ME044-071002-) (excavations.ie 2006:1630). The enclosure is a double ring-ditch consisting of an inner area (int. diam. 5.6-6.1m) defined by a V-shaped ditch (Wth of top 1.55-1.8m; max. D 0.45m) separated by a berm (Wth c. 3.5m) from an outer V-shaped ditch (Wth of top up to 3m; max. D 1.5m) with no causeways (ext. diam. 22.3m E-W; 21.7m N-S). There was little evidence of silting in the ditches and none of slumping, while both ditches underwent major partial re-cuts twice and many lesser ones. Nor was there evidence of a central pit or even a central mound. There was no evidence of upstanding banks, although gravel concentrations at the outer sides of both ditches suggest that an outer bank accompanied each ditch. The concentrations of material in some contexts within the ditches suggests that the monument was probably the focus of short sporadic periods of use. A large quantity of animal bone was recovered from the ditches, and there were deposits of charcoal and cremated bone in the final re-cut of the outer ditch in the E quadrant, and discrete cremated deposits were also recovered from the inner ditch. Fragments of unburned human skulls were found at three points in the outer ditch. Artefacts included flint waste, a piece of a bronze pin, unidentifiable iron fragments, and sherds of Late Bronze Age pottery, although one piece of an Early Bronze Age Vase Urn is also present. There was also an antler handle, and a piece of antler with a groove. A C14 date of 1880-1630 cal. BC was derived from the bottom of the inner ditch, while a date of 780-410 cal. BC was returned from its top, which is more akin to the dates from the outer fosse that produced a range of 1000-810 cal. BC from three samples in its central deposits. (Elder et al. 2009, 2-11) Over 1200 sherds of pottery were recovered, three quarters of which were from the outer fosse. The pottery was generally well-fired domestic ware of flat-bottomed type, although some large heavy vessels were present. Some sherds had faint lines of burning around the rim, suggesting they may have had lids. Many of the sherds were cleanly broken, intimating it had happened on site, as would be the case with two smashed vessels from the W part of the inner ditch that were almost completely present. The animal bone assemblage is dominated by cattle followed by pig and smaller quantities of red deer and sheep, and almost three quarters of the identifiable bones were cranial. D. Elder as Raynestown 1 (Elder et al. 2009) in July-September 2006 together with these nearby kilns and evidence of habitation (ME044-071002-) (excavations.ie 2006:1630). Located c. 40m SE-S of the double ring-ditch (ME044-071----) two features are thought to be kilns. A circular pit (diam. 2.5-2.6m; max. D 0.44m) had 22 fills consisting largely of sandy clays with decayed stone, charcoal flecks and burnt clay. It was cut by a possible hearth (dims 1.15m x 0.65m; D 0.19m) of reddish brown oxidised clay with charcoal flecks and burnt clay. Adjacent was a second cut (diam. 3.22m x 3.13m; max. D 0.4m) with 24 fills that had charcoal flecks and decayed stone throughout, and it was re-cut once (dims 0.81m x 0.6m; D 0.25m) with a fill of silty clay that had charcoal and iron flecks. A pit (dims 1.05m x 0.5m; D 0.32m) with similar fills also cut this feature. Five post-holes are associated with the kilns. Situated on a natural gravel rise in a gently undulating landscape. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E0472) by E. Cotter (2004) at Testing Area 11 of Contract 1 prior to the construction of the M3 motorway identified a small enclosure (excavations.ie: 2004:1333) that proved to be a ring-ditch (ME044-071----) and was fully excavated (E003038) by S. D. Elder as Raynestown 1 (Elder et al. 2009) in July-September 2006 together with nearby kilns (ME044-071001-) and this evidence of habitation (excavations.ie 2006:1630). A large pit (diam. 2.42-2.57m; D 0.28m) has eight spaced post-holes cut in its base and there are other smaller pits in the area. All the pits are filled with soils that contain charcoal flecks and burnt clay as well as decayed stone, but all the features may have been devoted to the production of charcoal. Just SW of the pits were concentrations of post-holes where five possible structures might be identified. Four of these are circular hut-sites overlapping each other and extending in a line NW-SE. Five post-holes may have formed a circular structure (diam. 3.25m) designated A, although many post-holes may have been removed by the second structure (diam. 3.25m), from which eight post-holes can be identified. A third structure (diam. c. 5-5.5m) has five post-holes including a central one. A fourth structure (diam. 7.5m) has a recognisable entrance porch (Wth c. 0.6m) at SE, but only five other post-holes might have been incorporated in it. The fifth structure (dims 2m NE-SW; 1.75m NW-SE) was a setting of four post-holes just S of the largest hut-site. No hearths are present and no artefacts seem to have been recovered from this area, apart from a possible hone-stone. (Elder et al. 2009, 13-15) See the attached plans from Elder et al.
