A castle at Newcastle (58) in Killeagh parish and Fore barony is not marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony or parish maps (http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Thomas Neugent of Rosse owned 280 acres there in 1640 and on the premises was ‘an unroofed castle and bawn, 20 cabins and a fishing wear’ (Simington 1940, 271). It is described as ‘Ross Castle’ in gothic lettering on the 1836 and 1908 eds of the OS 6-inch map. This is a four storey restored and occupied tower house (ext. dims 8m NNE-SSW; 7m WNW-ESE) with a base-batter and parapet, but only the W half is original. There are good quoins and the windows on the W side are narrow pointed opes with chamfered jambs. It is within a subcircular enclosure (diam. c. 44-50m) defined by masonry walls that appear to be modern, and there is a modern one storey structure just NE of the tower. Archaeological testing (18E0203) by P. D. Sweetman within c. 5m to the N produced no related material (excavations.ie 2018:610). Situated at the crest of the E-facing slope of a knoll, and c. 25m W of a S-N road to Ross castle (ME008-001----), which is c. 750m to the N. Local lore, enshrined in a novel (Getty 1970), describes it as the burial place of a misfortunate pair of lovers. The cross is now in an overgrown clearance cairn (dims c. 5m E-W; c. 4m N-S; H 0.3m at S to 1m at N). The head of a limestone solid ring-cross (H 0.51m; span 0.6m; T 0.15m) with a subrectangular disc (dims 0.38m x 0.37m) and protruding arms (L 0.1m; Wth 0.17m) has chamfered edges. There is no mortice or tenon to connect it to the shaft (dims 0.24m x 0.15m; L 0.74m) that is protruding from the cairn. It has no inscription but is probably 17th century in date. Detached three-bay two-storey country house, built c.1780, with pedimented dormer windows, and an Ionic portico. Carved stone Ionic columns to portico with entablature above. Hipped slate roof with ashlar limestone chimneystacks. Dressed limestone walls. Timber sash windows with ashlar limestone dressings. Replacement timber double doors, with fanlight and side lights.

Ranges of stables and outbuildings, built c.1780, set around a central courtyard, with related outbuildings to the south-west. Multiple-bay single-storey range of outbuildings to the north-east adjoin on a two-storey range to the rear. Multiple-bay single-storey ranges to the three remaining sides of the courtyard. Pitched slate roofs. Rubble stone walls. Ashlar limestone block-and-start dressings to openings.
