Situated on a S-facing slope overlooking Rossan Bog. A D-shaped embanked enclosure (ext. dims c. 45-50m N-S; c. 35m E-W) truncated by a N-S roadway at W is depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Fort’. It is depicted as a triangular hachured feature on the 1912 edition, and it is described locally as a fort before its removal c. 1950. It was described in 1969 (SMR file) as a low D-shaped and grass-covered rise (dims 40m NE-SW; 35m NW-SE) defined by a slight scarp (Wth c. 5m; H 0.2m) and it was probably a rath. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Three arches survive of a seven or nine arch seventeenth century road bridge over the Kinnegad River which forms the county boundary with Meath and connected Galway to Dublin (N6) via the village of Kinnegad. The village of Kinnegad is located 90m to the NW. The 17th century bridge has been replaced by the present concrete bridge that was constructed in 1936. A bridge over the Kinnegad River at this location is depicted on the 1654 Down Survey map of Farbill barony where it is annotated as ‘The Bridge of Kenegad’ and shown standing to the SE of Kinnegad Castle (WM027-071----) (NLI, MS 723-4). In 1661 this medieval bridge was replaced by a new bridge mentioned in the House of Commons Journal under the entry for the 22nd of March where it states that ‘the bridge of Kinnegad is much out of repaire and that great damage and loss hath happened to travellers and cattle in their passing over same and have ordered that two letters be written from the Speaker of the House, one to the Judges of Assize for the Co. of Meath and another to the Justices of Peace for the Co. of Westmeath to take care that according to Law a substantial bridge can be made over the said river Kinnegad’ (Simington and O’Keeffe 1991, 219). Described in 1991 as ‘three arches of the 1660s’ bridge and three upstream cutwaters have survived. The river has been diverted into a new and deeper cut immediately northwest of the surviving arches of the old bridge. The bridge erected across the new channel in 1840s was replaced by the present reinforced concrete bridge in 1936. The span of the surviving arches is 9ft (2.7m) with a rise of 3ft. 6in. (1.04m), a 105º degree arc segment. The piers are 10ft (3m) thick. The ring stone are wedge-shaped, 7in. on extrados and 4.5in. (0.11m) on the intrados averaging 18in. (0.28m) in depth on the head. They are well bonded into the barrel. The stones are not ashlar. The joints are not truly radial, especially in the haunches. The masonry in the cutwaters is coursed random rubble. The points of the upriver cutwaters are well cut stones and well bonded. The masonry in the cutwaters is coursed rubble, but the spandrels are of random rubble. Situated on a gently undulating landscape. An area of sub-surface archaeological features was identified by Ian Russell in centre-line testing (02E0108) for the M4 Dublin to Galway motorway and set aside for resolution as Rossan 1. On excavation (02E0866) many of the features proved to be nineteenth century in date but a small area of prehistoric activity was recorded. This consisted of two rectangular troughs (dims 1.98m x 1.24m; max. D 0.17m: 1.95m x 1.52m; max. D 0.25m) placed c. 5m apart. Both had primary fills of sandy clays with some charcoal inclusions, and there were 7 stake-holes in the floor of first and a stake-hole in each corner of the second. In the same area were 8 pits (diam. 0.3m; D 0.06m to 1.8m x 1.23m; D 0.24m), some with a charcoal content, and two pieces of worked flint and a worked piece of chert were recovered from them. These features were covered by charcoal-rich deposits, although the broken and burnt stones material of a fulacht fia was entirely absent, and the deposits were cut by later cultivation furrows. Situated on a gently undulating landscape. An area of sub-surface archaeological features was identified by Ian Russell in centre-line testing (02E0108) for the M4 Dublin to Galway motorway and set aside as Rossan 3. It was completely excavated (02E1065) when three pits were recorded with charcoal or burnt clay in their fills. One rectangular pit (dims 1m x 0.6m; D 0.15m) produced a C 14 date of Cal AD 1030-1280, while a second (diam. 0.7m; D 0.2m) had sherds of prehistoric pottery decorated with incised lines and finger-nail impressions. A charcoal sample from the pit with the pottery produced a C14 date of Cal BC 1760-1440. The third oval pit (dims 0.4m x 0.27m; D 0.1m) was cut into the circular pit. Situated on a N-facing slope in a gently undulating landscape. An area of sub-surface archaeological features was identified by Ian Russell in centre-line testing (02E0108) for the M4 Dublin to Galway motorway and set aside as Rossan 4. Excavation (02E1066) over a wide strip (dims 69m E-W; 7m N-S) revealed a subrectangular hearth (dims 1.4m x 1.12m; T 0.12m) with a post-hole nearby. A second subrectangular hearth (dims 2.08m x 1.3m; T 0.2m) is c. 10m to the W. A charcoal-filled pit (dims 0.55m x 0.28m; D 0.18m) was c. 20m further W with an extensive area (dims 8m x 6m) of oxidised clay between the two. No artefacts were recovered but charcoal samples from the charcoal pit produced C14 readings of Cal AD 1460-1680, Cal. AD 1770-1800 and Cal AD 1940-1950 suggesting it is modern. Situated on a N-facing slope in a gently undulating landscape. An area of sub-surface archaeological features was identified by Ian Russell in centre-line testing (02E0108) for the M4 Dublin to Galway motorway and set aside as Rossan 6. Excavation (02E1068) revealed 17 pits cut into subsoil, three of which with oxidized bases and containing charcoal and large slag inclusions were located at the S edge of the excavated area. They are interpreted as a bowl furnace (0.78m x 0.76m; D 0.4m) with a radiocarbon date of Cal. BC 370-50, and two bloom-smithing hearths (dims 3.5m x 3.2m; D 0.44m; 1.48m x 0.73m; D 0.21m) the larger of which may have originated as a charcoal production pit and has a C14 date of Cal BC 820-780 from the primary fill (Murphy 2004, 6-7). About 60m to the NNW is an area with about 10 pits (diam. 0.62m; D 0.44m to 2.9 x 1.98m; max. D 0.39m) filled with silty sands and clays containing some charcoal or oxidized clay, but no artefacts were recovered and only one unworked flint was found in one of the hearths (ibid. 3-7). A cluster of archaeological deposits which, perhaps, represent a single or multiple structures. It consisted of a cluster of archaeological deposits exposed on the field surface and in the drain face for over 14m from north to south and up to 0.5m below the field surface. While it was not possible to distinguish individual structures within, the cluster was recorded at three individual locations providing an indication of the sort of deposits exposed at the time of the survey. These contained horizontal brushwood and roundwoods up to 0.15m in diameter occurring singly or in groups. Several stakes were also noted on the field surface. A mix of wood species is evident and all deposits are located within raised bog peats. Toolmarks were present on several worked ends throughout the cluster with stone tool marks identified on wood from at least one location. (Bermingham 2014) The deposits were not re-located during a pre-season field visit in April 2015 (licence: 15E0160). However, an earlier sample was used for dating, and the site was dated cal. 2618-2570 BC, UBA-26637 (Whitaker 2017). Human remains were discovered in Rossan Bog in 2014. In March an arm bone discovered in a pile of milled peat (ITM 659485,743718; NMI reg. no. 2014:74) and in September the lower leg and foot bones of an adult were found at this location (NMI reg. no. 2014:262). It is possible that both of these finds are connected, and represent the same individual, but is impossible to determine at this point in time (pers. comm. Maeve Sikora, National Museum of Ireland, 21 November 2014). The remains of another body dating to the Bronze Age had been discovered in this bog in 2012 (ME046-084----): it was radiocarbon dated to between 700 and 400 BC. This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Kinnegad Bog. The site was first recorded in the 2013 Peatland Survey as a cluster of archaeological deposits exposed on the field surface and in the drain face over 14m, orientated N-S and up to 0.5m below the field surface. It was contained in raised bog peats. The cluster was recorded at three individual locations, and consisted of horizontal brushwood and roundwood occurring singly or in groups. Several stakes were also noted on the field surface. Toolmarks were present on several worked ends (Bermingham 2014). The site was dated to cal. 2618-2570 BC (UBA 26637). The site was not re-located during a pre-season field visit in April 2015. On the 25th of June 2015 (licence 15E0160), the find spot was found using GPS, but no wood remained in situ. Remains of multi-arch road bridge over Kinnegad River, built c.1665 and altered c.1735 and c.1840. Constructed of coursed random rubble stone with roughly dressed voussoirs to the arch. Three arches of the seventeenth century bridge survive to the southeast side of the bridge, over former river channel, with modern concrete span to the northwest, built c.1936. Cut waters rising to pedestrian refuges over to the upstream side of early bridge (west). Located to the east end of Kinnegad, straddling the border with County Meath to the east.
