John Fleming of Siddan owned 500 acres and the Castle there in 1640 (Simington 1940, 360), and one of the two ruinous buildings that are depicted at Suddan on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map of Slane is in roughly this location. Polecastle, the townland to the E of Siddan, is included with it in the Down Survey map. Taylor and Skinner's map (1783, 260) depicts two ruins at Suddan S of the old Ardee to Kells road c. 250m to the S. The present location is depicted as the SW quadrant of an embanked enclosure described as the ‘Site of Siddan Castle’ on the 1836 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. The field is known locally as the Moat field, but there is no reason other than the OS maps to think that the castle was located here. It is situated at the S end of a N-S ridge. There is a flat-topped, grass-covered mound (diam. of top 13m N-S; 11.m E-W; H 0.4m at N to 3m) here. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 7 June 2016 Shown as ruined castle on and as fragment of ringfort bank on 1837 OS 6" map. Flat-topped mound (diam. 13m N-S, 11m E-W, H 0.4-3m), now on site. - ME006-043: Fortification, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME006-043----. Situated on top of Gun Hill, it is described in gothic lettering as ‘Cromwell’s Battery’ on the OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a raised rectangular and grass-covered platform (dims 45m NW-SE; 23m NE-SW) defined by scarps (H 1m at SW to 2.5m at NE). The scarp of its NW edge continues S accompanied by slight traces of an outer fosse while curving E until it is truncated by a N-S field bank and double ditch (total Wth c. 10m) that also cuts through the platform. The curving scarp (H 1.4m) with an entrance gap (Wth 8m) at one point creates a D-shaped enclosure (dims 92m N-S; 28m E-W) with the N-S field bank. The rectangular platform may have been a gun-platform commanding the road from Athboy to Ardee which ran through Siddan. Archaeological monitoring (99E0725) of the removal of a pole produced no related material (Russell 2000, 2002). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 26 October 2018 Amended: 15 December 2022 - ME006-056: Settlement deserted - medieval, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME006-056----. Located on a S-facing slope. Siddan was granted a charter about the middle of the thirteenth century. The placename Sogain, occurring in two twelfth century charters could indicated an older date if Sogain is Siddan (MacNiocaill 1961, 20, 34). The charter is published in the original Latin (MacNiochaill 1964 vol. 1, 319-20) when Philipus Tulynge was the lord of the manor, and the rights of Breteuil were granted to the burgesses. Breteuil is a town in northern France, and its charter granted very liberal rights to its burgesses that became standard, including rents of a shilling a year. However, almost nothing is known of the subsequent history of Siddan, which suggests that it was a complete failure as a town and by the mid-seventeenth century it was just a rural parish. According to the Civil Survey (1655) James Fleming of Siddan was the biggest landowner with 500 acres including what must have been the core of the old settlement as it had a castle, a ruined church (ME006-056001-), two mills, two farmhouses, the broken bridge of Aboy (ME006-035----) and some cabins (Simington 1940, 360). The location of the settlement is not known with certainly but it was probably clustered around the church site. Situated on a knoll on a S facing slope in the valley of a small SE-NW stream which is c. 30m to the S and which joins the River Dee c. 1.5km to the NW. The parish church of Siddan, dedicated to SS Mary and David, was granted to St. Mary’s Cistercian abbey in Dublin c. 1200 (Bradley and King 1985, 129, 130), and it was still amongst its possessions at the Dissolution in 1540 (White 1943, 30). The names of some of the clergy are known (Cogan 1862-70, 2, 340). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel as ruins (Erlington 1847-64, 1, xcvi). According to Dopping’s Visitation (1682-5) the church was in ruins since 1641 and was not enclosed (Ellison 1973, 5). According to Lewis (1837, 2, 594) a church had been built in 1753. The site of the medieval parish church is within a rectangular graveyard (max. dims c. 87m N-S; c. 50m E-W) defined by masonry walls where the present St. David’s Church of Ireland church that was built in 1881 stands, but the precise location of the earliest church structure is not known. In the graveyard is a cross-slab (Wth 0.5m; H 1.1m) with a latin cross (Wth 0.45m; H 0.46m) in relief (Wth 7cm) on one face. The font from Drumcondrath (ME006-012003-) is now outside the present church. The sandstone font is rectangular (ext. dims 0.58m x 0.58m; H 0.46m) with chamfered corners (Wth 0.12m) and under-panels, and a circular, flat-bottomed basin (diam. 0.47m; D 0.27m). There are holes on the rim for a cover. (Roe 1968, 114) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).
