Situated in a col between the Hill of Slane to the NW and the lower Gallows Hill, the summit of which is c. 100m to the SE. There were reports that a souterrain had fallen in at Slane village c. 1910 (SMR file), but its precise location is not known within c. 100m and no description is available. Archaeological testing (15E0108) by C. Brady in the area immediately to the SW produced no evidence of a souterrain but three small fire-spots (dims c. 0.25-0.6m) were noted (excavations.ie 2015:030). Located towards the bottom of a steep S-facing slope of Slane Hill. A souterrain is said to have fallen in c. 1910 and it is marked on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Cave’. It was still open but inaccessible in 1939. In 1968 it was described (SMR file) as a circular chamber (diam. 3.45m; H c. 2m) the floor of which was covered in debris but no passage was visible. It had a corbelled roof closed with a single large roofstone (diam. 0.6m; T 0.15m). Archaeological testing (95E0106) by R. Meenan c. 70-120m distant SE-SSW produced no related material (excavations.ie 1995:235). Two medieval graveslabs and other features from the parish church of Stackallan (ME018-030----) are now attached to the W wall of the vestry of the Church of Ireland church at Slane. Also at this location is an effigial slab from Painestown church (ME026-0020----). It is an image of an ecclesiastic (max. Wth 0.46m; H 1.3m), surrounded by a shroud, and now missing the upper body and head. It is described by Hunt (1974, 214) as: Built into the outside wall of the vestry of the Church of Ireland church in Slane is a very interesting early slab of freestone which was removed there from the church at Painestown in the same county. It shows a figure of an ecclesiastic who lies upon the wedge-shaped slab with chamfered edges now unfortunately concealed in the wall. The edges of the slab are carved with a running foliate stem with recurved leaves. The foot end of the slab is pointed. The man’s feet rest upon a head presumably signifying evil. He is dressed in a pleated garment, an alb, falling in fine folds from the shoulders and girt at the waist. The upper part falls in a deep fold over the position of the tucking girdle, the ends of which can faintly be seen. The lower part of the alb appears to have a deep apparel on the front of it. The upper part of the slab, with the head probably upon a cushion, is missing and the present height of the body from feet to neck is four feet, the overall height of the monument at the moment being four feet eight inches. The style is assured and dignified. The slab is a production of a West of England- Dublin workshop. It is comparable with the figure of an abbot or bishop (Simon de Rochfort (?) at Newtown Trim, Co. Meath (197) with a similar border to the slab and to the ‘Felix O’Dullny’ effigy at Jerpoint, Co.Kilkenny (113). The effigy dates probably to the late twelfth or early thirteenth century. Crossing a NW-SE section of the River Boyne with the steep sides of the valley rising immediately on the NE side and c. 80m from the river bank on the SW side. Edward Bruce’s army crossed the river at Slane in 1317, but it is not known if a bridge facilitated this. If there was a bridge, it did not survive the flood of 1330. There is a reference to a bridge at Slane in 1599, and the bridge is depicted on the Down Survey (1656) barony and parish maps of Slane. It seems to have been provided with a gate as the Civil Survey (1654) describes ‘a Stone Bridge with an ould castle thereon’ (Simington 1940, 343). The bridge at Slane is marked on Moll’s map of 1714 and on Taylor and Skinner’s 1778 map of the roads of Ireland (Andrews 1969, 41). (O’Keefe and Simington 1991, 153-6; 2016, 172-80) The bridge with the causeway on the SW side (total L c. 160m) has 13 arches. On the SE or down-river side seven of these have pointed or segmental arches that are probably in their original form. Five of these are in the river and the others are for overflow on the banks. The bridge was expanded in width as can be seen in the join under the arches. The SE side (Wth 4.8m) is original and the NW side (Wth 2.5m) was added and the piers provided with breakwaters, probably in the early nineteenth century. From King (1984, 103): A shaft fragment with a tenon at the base, decorated in false relief. Each face has figure sculpture and there are no inscriptions. 1st: Crucifixion. Christ is wearing a very stylised perizonium and there are two small figures at the foot of the cross which could either be Mary and John or the sponge and lance bearers. 2nd: Possibly a depiction of the Virgin and Child. She is wearing a pleated tunic and holds the child in her arms. He appears to be holding a circular object in his right hand. 3rd: A bearded ecclesiastic wearing a pleated alb and chasuble. 4th: St. Andrew wearing a pleated tunic and holding a large saltire cross. This cross was not noticed by Westropp (1901, 405, 431) but was subsequently noted by FitzGerald (1913, 145) and Trench (1976, 31). A date early in the 16th century is suggested.‘ The cross was missing during the 1970s and 1980s, but was rediscovered at St. Erc’s Hermitage in 1985. It was presented by Lord Henry Mountcharles to an Taisce, who arranged to have it displayed at the Slane branch of the Meath County Library (Irish Times, 26/04/1985, 7). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
