Situated on a rise in an undulating landscape. This rath is described as ‘Hebigan Fort’ on the OS 6-inch maps. It is a raised subcircular, naturally domed (H 1.2-1.5m) and grass-covered area (dims 28m E-W; 23m N-S) defined a scarp (at NNE: Wth 4.5m; H 2.3m; at SSW: Wth 4.3m; H 1.8m) that merges into the natural slope. There is no visible fosse or entrance but the base of the slope is circumvented by a field bank and hedge S-W-N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Located on top of a broad low hill in an undulating landscape. A beehive chamber of a complex souterrain (No. 2) was accidently discovered in December 1987, and the area was excavated (E000460) the following summer when a second souterrain (ME005-104001-) came to light which proved to be earlier. No structures were associated with the souterrains and evidence of an enclosing bank or ditch was not encountered. The absence of an enclosure was confirmed by a resisitivity survey, and the souterrains were conserved by the landowner, presumably by closing. (Eogan 1990) The S-N main passage (L 11.9m; Wth c. 1m; max. H 1.3m) of the later souterrain 2 was entered at its S end, but its E side had been damaged by a pit (diam. 2.5m; D 0.75m) close to the entry. The passage, most of whose roofstones had been removed, extended N as the floor descended. It cut the passage of the earlier souterrain 1 (ME005-104001-) and could have incorporated its beehive chamber as a spur to the W. The passage was back-filled with stony clays and the few artefacts recovered suggest that this occurred in the eighteenth century. At its N end the passage dropped into a lower S-N passage (L 2.6m) which connected with an E-W transverse passage (L 7.3m; Wth c. 1m; H c. 1.4m) at its centre. At the W end of the transverse passage is a beehive chamber (diam. 3m; H 2.6m) and at the E end is a similar beehive chamber (diam. 3m; H 2.3m). A fragment of a millstone rough-out was built into the wall of the entrance passage and fragments of two quernstones were in the passages. The excavation on the surface was limited to the area around the souterrain entrances, the only features being a few pits, but amongst the few finds was a bronze stud. A roofstone in the entrance passage was a re-used ogham stone (ME005-104002-), and two roofstones (ME005-104003-; ME005-104004-) from the transverse passage also had ogham inscriptions. No structures were associated with the souterrains and evidence of an enclosing bank or ditch was not encountered. The absence of an enclosure was confirmed by a resisitivity survey, and the souterrains were conserved by the landowner, presumably by closing. (Eogan 1990) This earlier souterrain (No. 1) consists of a passage (L 3m; Wth 0.8m; H 0.7-1.25m) entered at the E end by a vertical pit or shaft that was not detected in excavation. The passage leads W to a beehive chamber (diam. 3m; H 2m), which had a layer of silt on the floor. A shallow oval pit (dims 1.2m x 0.75m) was dug through this, indicating recent disturbance, probably in the eighteenth century. The entrance passage of souterrrain 2 (ME005-104----) was run through the short passage of this souterrain at a slightly higher level and incorporated its beehive chamber as a spur to the W. Primary finds, mostly from the passage, included a bone comb, fragment of a bronze escutcheon from a bowl, an iron chisel and an iron knife, suggesting that it could have been extant by the eight century. Three stones with fragments of ogham inscriptions were re-used as roofstones in souterrain 2 (ME005-104----). This sandstone boulder (L c. 1.4m; max. dims 0.74m x 0.33m) was in the outer part of the entrance passage. The inscription on a ridge of the stone rather than an edge is incomplete. It has been read by Fionnbarr Moore as: R…CTVI, with a vowel, either E or I after the R. This sandstone piece (L 1.3m plus; dims 0.25m x 0.25m) was in the transverse passage and was probably shaped to provide stemlines for the inscription visible on two angles. The inscription has been read by Fionnbarr Moore as: MAQI…BIQ…on one angle, but the other angle could not be read because it was too tightly wedged in the roof. Discovered in 2006 among stones removed from a roadside boundary. The stone currently in private possession on this site. ‘The ogham inscription is carved on an oblong sandstone fragment which measures 42 cm (max.) in length, 14 cm in width on its broad fare and 10 cm on the narrow. The remains of seven ogham scores are visible running along the angle between the broad and narrow faces This angle or the stone acted as the arris or stemline, with respect to which the ogham scores were incised. As it is only a fragment and as the inscribed angle of the stone is worn and damaged it is not possible to get a name from the few scores that survive. Furthermore, the wear on the stone has removed the surface elements of the writing and only the inner or lower part of each score survives. Because of this some of the original lettering has completely disappeared while in other parts only a hint of a vowel notch or consonant stroke survives. The wear on the broad race is more pronounced and this may indicate that it was eroded in antiquity when the fragment was part of an inscribed pillar stone. The visible ogham scores begin 12 cm from the end of the fragment, with a consonant stroke running for a length of 4 cm to the left of the stemline. A spall on the edge of the stone just below this makes it impossible to say whether this score began at the edge or whether an M-score crossed it originally. The spall has also removed any trace of writing on the lower part of the stone. There is a hint of a vowel notch 2 cm above the first score and further damage to the stone beyond this may have removed related vowel notches. Just over 4 cm above the vowel notch a group of four strokes cross the stemline and traces of another consonant stroke are visible beyond this on the angle and on the broad face of the stone. This group of four strokes crossing the stemline may represent a double M or if the last stroke was also part of the group, the letter R. While this is all that can be read on the stone, the lettering clearly conforms to the pattern of ogham writing and while the scoring may appear to be slightly irregular this can be explained by the wear on the stone and the fact that the lettering would have originally been much deeper with the result that the unevenness in line length and straightness would have been far less pronounced than it is today.’ The above description has been derived from G. Eogan and F. Moore 2008 A fragement of an Iron-Age quern and an ogham stone. Peritia 20, p. 300.
