This monument is described by Stout (1991, 271-4) as: This monument is depicted as a large circular wood on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map and is located at the SW end of a broad NE-SW ridge that is c. 3km north of the River Boyne. The underlying bedrock is Early Palaeozoic shale, covered by glacial deposits on which a brown earth soil has formed. A probable passage tomb (ME025-006----) is located on the S side of the river at Broadboyne Bridge, 3.2km to the SSE. A continuous flat-topped earthen bank (Wth of base 17m; Wth of top 5m at S; int. H 2.2-2.8m; ext. H 1.7-1.9m) encloses a roughly circular saucer-shaped interior (int. diam. c. 75m N-S). The source for the bank material is a shallow scarped area best seen (Wth c. 12m; int. D c. 0.2m) inside the bank at N. A narrow ridge of earth (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.2m), added to the outer lip of the bank top at N, probably dates from the conversion of the enclosure into a tree ring when the outer slope of the bank here (Wth 0.5m; ext. H 1.75m) was steepened. A 6m-wide lowering of the bank at WSW does not penetrate to the base of the enclosing earthwork and is unlikely to be original, and an original entrance is not identified. Situated on a shelf of a slight NE-facing slope in the valley of a small NW-SE stream, which is c. 40m to the NE and c. 1.8km WNW of where the stream enters the River Boyne. A church at Stackallan is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 261). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel as in reasonable repair (Erlington 1847-64, 1, xcii). According to Dopping’s Visitation (1682-5) the parish church of Stackallan was in disrepair since 1641 but the walls were good, and the graveyard was not enclosed (Ellison 1973, 5, 6). Cogan (1862-70, 2, 303-04) says the church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and mentions a font in the graveyard that is not evident now. The early 16th century church is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 50m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by masonry walls. The church was in use up to the middle of the 20th century, but it was deconsecrated and removed in 1955. It is described in 1940 as having the hood-mouldings of four segmental-arched windows on the S wall, each with two lights provided in wood. There was one window with three lights on the W wall, but there were no windows in the N wall. The E window was larger than the W and had three lights, with a male head at the apex of the hood and female heads on the labels (SMR file). The foundations of the church (ext. dims 23.5m E-W; 8.3m N-S) are traceable, although covered in cairn material (H 2m). The segmental-arched doorway (Wth 0.95m; H 2.05m) from the W wall with a hood-moulding that terminates in foliage half way down the jambs is now built into the W wall of the vestry at St Patrick's Church of Ireland church in Slane (ME019-02303-). The escutcheon from over the doorway, now also at Slane (ME019-023004-), is the arms of Barnewall, and the inscription is to Sir Barnaby Barnewall, who died in 1493, and his wife, Margaret Plunkett (Du Noyer 1891; Leask 1960, 2, 31-2). Two medieval graveslabs from the church are now also in Slane (ME019-023002-; ME019-023005-). One (Wth 0.37-0.65m; L 1.71m) is coffin-shaped with a floriated cross in relief and a sword with a central groove and disc pommel is parallel with the stem. An inscription along the long edges of the stone reads in French: Pater noster P charite pur la / lme sire Richard Descetre le seco. The other slab is also coffin-shaped (Wth 0.37-0.62m; L 1.61m) with a two-line expanding cross inside a two-line incised border. There are marigolds flanking the head of the cross and a design at the diamond-shaped crux. Situated within a gully on the S bank of a meandering W-E stream. Wilde noted that it was neglected and disused in his time (1849, 170) and Thunder writing in 1886-7 also recorded its ‘neglected’ state. Patrick is depicted and named on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map. The well is supposed to have a stone with the mark of St Patrick's knees on it (IFC: Schools' Collection, vol. 714, 20). It was recorded as a rectangular masonry sunken feature in 1969 (SMR file) but it had been become obscured by 2019. Archaeological testing (20E0223) by R. Tobin demonstrated that ground level had been raised (c. 0.6m) when a pumphouse c. 2m S of the well damaged the original masonry structure (dims c. 1m x c. 1m), part of which survived with a channel leading N to the stream. Local information records that Tober Patrick was c. 200m further E and on the N side of the stream. Situated on the NW bank of a SW-NE section of the River Boyne, at a point where the stream turns briefly SE (L c. 300m) before resuming a NE course. It is annotated as ‘Lugaree’ on the 1836 and 1908 editions OS. The god Lugh was one of the Tuatha Dé Danan and had many attributes, including the invention of horse-racing. The swimming of horses in the River Blackwater at Martry was an integral part of the Lughnasa celebrations of Tailtiu into the nineteenth century. The horse and its rider plunged into a deep pool of the river before sunrise as a protection against disease. Wilde (1849, 171) records the swimming of horses and cattle across the river at Lugaree or the ‘King’s Hole’ which continued until shortly before his time and this may be another Lughnasa association. Built of rendered limestone with quoins to corners and to breakfronts. Steeply pitched natural slate roof of late seventeenth-century French fashion with two rendered chimneystacks. Flat-headed window openings with moulded stone surrounds and moulded stone sills. Replacement timber sash windows of fifteen panes on all floors of the principal facades, with the top floor being reduced to nine panes. Stone string courses between floors. A range of outbuildings, built around an open courtyard, located to the north of the house.
