Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape, and just NW of the church (ME038-017----) of Trevet on the W side of a N-S public road. This field was known as the Schoolhouse Field, and there was a folk memory of village around Trevet church (IFC, Schools Collection, vol. 0687, 296). An area of about four hectares (c. 10 acres) in pasture and confined within one modern field has relict field banks and scarps as well as drains (Wth c. 2m; D c. 0.2-0.5m). They create fields (dims c. 30-100m N-S; c. 100m E-W) originating in a curving hollow way (at S: Wth of top 15.5m; D 1.4-1.6m) extending N from the graveyard. A small rectangular enclosure (ME038-016----) is just SW of the hollow way close to the graveyard. This is part of the field system (ME038-015----) and is just S of the E end of the hollow way. It consists of a raised rectangular and grass-covered area (dims. 33m E-W; 30m N-S) defined by scarps (H c. 1m) with slight fosses and a ramp entrance (Wth 3m) at W. Located on a rise on a broad, low hill, with wide view out E-S over what would have been the lake of Lagore. An early monastery was founded at Trevet (Treoit) before AD 563, but no trace of it is evident. The founder was probably Lónan, but even his name is not remembered locally (Ó Riain 2011, 403). Notices of scribes and abbots, often called princeps or prince, of Treoit date from 739. The oratory of Treoit was burned in 850 and the church was ruined in warfare in 903. It was burned by Donnchadh O Carroll in 1145 and by the Uí Broinn in 1152 (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 152-4; Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 46). After the Anglo-Norman settlement the church became parochial. A church dedicated to the Holy Trinity at Trevet is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire., 5, 254). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel at Trivett as ‘somewhat ruined’ (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxi). According to the Dopping (1682-5) and Royal (1693) visitations the walls of St Patrick’s church and the chancel at Trevet were standing but it was unroofed, and the graveyard was not fenced (Ellison 1971, 38). The names of many of the clergy are known (Cogan 1862-70, 2, 154-5), but the parish was united with Kilbrew in 1678 (Lewis 1837, 2, 645-6). The parish church is within a raised but neglected subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 62m E-W; c. 43m N-S) defined by masonry walls with very few headstones that appear to be 19th century in date. There is a NNE-SSW public road immediately to the W. There is a mound (ME038-018----) just to the N, and the field system (ME038-015----) with its associated hollow way and rectangular enclosure (ME038-016----) are just to the NW. The church is an undivided nave and chancel structure (int. dims 28m E-W; 6.2m N-S), of which the W wall (with plentiful cairn material inside) and interrupted sections of the N and S walls partially survive (H c. 3m). A destroyed S doorway, which has an ogee-headed stoup (Wth 0.25m; H 0.45m; D 0.23m) with chamfered edges, on the E side of the embrasure is the only recognisable feature. There is one window embrasure W of the S doorway and two to the E, and a corbel in the inner face of the S wall, E of the surviving embrasure suggests that there may have been a rood loft. The walls at the E end of the church are reduced to the grass-covered foundations. Two stones associated with the memorial of Sir Thomas Cusack dated 1571 (FitzGerald 1917; Roe 1969, 18-19; Hickey 1971, 82-90) are in the chancel area, but they are obscured by growth. A small armorial stone was moved to Staffordstown church (ME032-001003-), probably before the middle of the 18th century, where it cannot now be located, and a large side-stone depicting the family is now displayed in the Church of Ireland church at Tara (ME031-033084-) (Hickey 1971, 77-82). A broken heraldic stone (dims 2.56m x 1.22m) has a family tree representing the children and some grandchildren of Sir Thomas and his wife, Dame Maud (nee Darcy), depicted as shields springing from a central stem. The arms of three sons are on the dexter (left as viewed and reading from the bottom) side, and the crests of the husbands of seven daughters are on the sinister side. From the crests depicted Hickey concludes that it was commissioned c. 1604-09 by Sir Abrose Forthe, whose family held the tithes of Trevet and who was married to a granddaughter of Sir Thomas, (ibid. 82-4). There were multiple alliances with the Aylmer family of Lyons, Co. Kildare, but other families represented were Tuite, Bellew, Talbot, Cruise, Handcock, Butler, Cowley, and Morrogh O’Brien, 4th Baron Inchequin, the first husband of Margaret. Another stone (dims 2.15m x 0.87m) is broken in several places and has an incised inscription commemorating Sir Thomas, who was Lord High Chancellor, or chief law officer, at one point (FitzGerald 1917). The stone was carved by his son John, and the epitaph composed by a grandson, James. The inscription is surrounded by mementes mori – death as a skeleton aiming an arrow at Sir Thomas who holds an hour-glass, a shroud with a spirit arising from it, and a mermaid for the Cusack family. Another stone (dims 2.15m x 0.87m), also in the chancel, is broken in several places and has an incised inscription in Latin commemorating Sir Thomas, who was Lord High Chancellor of Ireland, or chief law officer, at one point (FitzGerald 1917). The stone was carved by his son John, and the epitaph composed by a grandson, James. The inscription is surrounded by mementes mori – death as a skeleton aiming an arrow at Sir Thomas who holds an hour-glass, a shroud with a spirit arising from it, and a mermaid for the Cusack family. Hickey (1971, 82-3) concludes that the stones were commissioned c. 1604-09 by Sir Abrose Forthe, who held the tithes of Trevet and was married to a granddaughter of Sir Thomas. Located on the summit of a rise in a fairly level landscape, and just N of the graveyard of Trevet church (ME038-017----). This is depicted as a circular embanked feature described as a ‘Mound’ in gothic lettering on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map and as a hachured feature on the 1908 edition. It is described in 1969 (SMR file) as a grass and scrub-covered oval mound (dims 16.5m NE-SW; 11.5m NW-SE; H 1.9m at SW to 2.4m at NE) with mature deciduous trees. There is no visible fosse or outer bank and it has a rounded top. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Located on a shelf excavated into a gentle SW-facing slope. Archaeological testing (04E0418) by J. Dempsey of Testing Area 4, Contract 2, prior to the construction of the M3 motorway identified a cobbled surface (Dempsey 2004, 22-3). The area was excavated (E003067) intermittently by S. Rathbone as Trevet 1 (excavations.ie 2006:1646) between November 2005 and December 2006 when a section of road leading to buildings in a cobbled area were recorded. There was also evidence of a prehistoric burnt mound at the N edge of the excavated area. The road (Wth c. 5m) ran W-E and terminated at the entrance to a large building (ext. dims c. 20m N-S; c. 6m E-W), with a possible E-W return (ext. dims c. 9m E-W; c. 6m N-S) extending E from the N end. The building is defined by the slight remains of stone walls, never more than one course high that survived as inner or outer faces at SW, W and possibly at E. A stone facing (L 6.5m plus) survives at the base of a slight slope at S and W, creating a wall (Wth c. 1m) with a rubble core, but there is no foundation trench although the NE corner of the building is dug into the natural slope. The outer face of the S wall extended down the inner edge of a ditch here. A pit (diam. 0.9m; D 0.4m) close to the line of the E wall and filled with a silty clay produced 82 sherds of medieval pottery. Towards the S end the W wall turns inwards to an entrance (Wth c. 1.2m) that is reached by a paved path around the S end of the building or the N end of an L-shaped ditch (Wth c. 2m) that surrounds the SW angle of the building. The building had no internal hearths or post-holes and it was probably a narrow, single storey, cruck-built structure with cob walls on low stone bases. The remains are slight and the stratigraphy thin, and other interpretations of the meagre walls are possible; the E return could be a separate structure. (Rathbone 2009, 2-5) East of the building a large area (dims c. 26m N-S; 16m plus E-W) extending E outside the excavated area had three identifiable styles of cobbling, which are all probably contemporary with each other and the building. Four small pits with in situ burning cut through the cobbling and are probably hearths. A possible well (diam. 1m), 2m E of the building, was cut by a seventeenth century drain and its relationship with the cobbled surface could not be established. A N-S ditch (L 16.6m plus; Wth 0.72m; D 0.38m) c. 13m E of the N-S building was probably a contemporary drain. (Rathbone 2009, 5-6) The entire area was covered by a thin deposit of compacted clay that could be the remains of the cob walls of the buildings mixed with midden material. It produced almost 2000 artefacts, largely pottery sherds, and over 3000 sherds were recovered in total. This comprised Leinster cooking ware and locally produced wheel-thrown wares. There were also fine wares dating from the late twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. The local wares may have been produced in the vicinity. Metal finds included a cruciform strap-end, metal knives and metal cauldron-legs. The small amount of animal bone represented at least three cattle, three sheep/goat, three pigs, two horses and one dog. Two of the pits were cut by the excavation of the medieval platform into the hillslope, but no evidence of a mound or trough was found. Samples from two of the pits produced C14 dates of 2293-2036 cal. BC (BETA 246986) and 2136-1906 cal. BC (BETA 246987).
