Situated at the bottom of a S-facing slope. It is depicted as a rectangular enclosure and described as a ‘Dane’s Fort’ only on a manuscript map (21 F 15 (20) in the National Library of Ireland, which was made in 1789. It is not visible at ground level in pasture, and it does not appear on any aerial images. Its exact location is not known. Located on a S-facing slope. It is depicted as a small copse on the 1836 and 1912 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is a circular grass-covered mound (diam. of base c. 13m; H c. 1.8-2.4m) surrounded by tree-ring bank and outer ditch (ext. diam. c. 25-30m). It is truncated by a NNE-SSW field bank at W. Archaeological investigations (07E0667) were undertaken at this site in 2007 (Halliday 2007). A series of trenches were excavated and revealed two burial grounds (ME042-033----; ME042-034----), a possible burnt mound (ME042-036----) and a possible prehistoric circular structure (ME042-037----). ‘A series of trenches were excavated across the southern area of the proposed development and a significant number of archaeological features were identified. The majority of these were concentrated in the eastern part of the development and included two distinct burial grounds that are thought to date to the Early Medieval period. . . . The second burial was located c. 160m to the north of the first [ME042-034----] with 29 separate bone concentrations bring identified. Where grave cuts were recorded they were all found to be oriented east-west again suggesting an Early Medieval date. As with the southern graveyard, these burials were probably enclosed by a circular ditch, this time measuring c. 45-50m in diameter. Furthermore, some of the burials were recorded as truncating a linear feature indicating that there was activity in this area prior of the creation of the burial ground. Images of the enclosure were captured by Noel and Conor Murphy in near-drought conditions during July 2018. A high number of other features were also identified in close proximity to this northern graveyard, but no further investigation was undertaken at this stage. As a result, it is impossible to interpret the function of any of these features.’ (ibid., executive summary). The majority of these were concentrated in the eastern part of the development and included two distinct burial grounds that are thought to date to the Early Medieval period. The first of these was located in the southeast corner of the area on top of a low mound identified as an area of high potential in the original EIS. At least thirteen individual burials were identified with adult inhumations being recorded in the southern half of the mound, while infant and neo-natal burials were recorded in the northern half. A possible enclosing ditch was also identified surrounding these burials along with the remains of a probable fulacht fiadh.’ (ibid., executive summary). The second burial ground was located c. 160m to the north (ME042-033----). The burnt mound remains were recorded by the excavator as ‘a large spread that extended outwith [sic] the limits of the trench that was full of burnt stone material. Given its location close to the stream, it is highly likely that this feature is the remains of a fulacht fiadh. It was not investigated during this phase of work.’ (ibid., 34, 6.34.3; (Field 4, Trench 35: Feature 2). The external diameter of the structure (as visible within the confines of the trench) measured 10.4m and a gap in the ditch was recorded, probably indicating an entrance for the structure. Within the confines of the ditch three postholes were recorded following the line of the ditch on its inside. Also noted within the interior of the ditch, seven probable stakeholes were identified along with part of the remains of a probable central hearth. The area was cleaned extensively and a scaled drawing was produced of the structure. The visible remains of this structure are considered to be of prehistoric dale and although no evidence was recorded of other structures it would not be impossible for other structures to be present between the excavated trenches.’ (Halliday 2007, 38 (6.45.3-4); Field 5: Trench 44). The location of this monument must be considered as approximate. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
