- ME050-009: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME050-009----. Situated on a rise in an undulating landscape. A decayed chapel is listed at Veysingstowne in the Civil Survey (1654-6) (Simington 1940, 126), but a chapel at Vessington in the large parish of Dunboyne does not occur in the ecclesiastical lists. However, it is amongst nine chapels recorded by Cogan (1862-70, vol. 1, 189-90), who says that this church had been destroyed and its graveyard desecrated c. 1830 when cartloads of bones were removed. A ditch had been dug through it and bones were protruding from its sides. It is marked as a subrectangular area (dims c. 45m N-S; c. 15m E-W at N; c. 40m E-W at S) on the 1836 and 1910 eds of the OS 6-inch map and it is described on both as the site of a graveyard. It is recorded locally that bones were uncovered there in the mid-20th century (SMR file, 1968). This may have been a large enclosed monument defined by two concentric earthen banks (ext. diam. c. 120m). A segment survives radiating from the centre to the NE (radius c. 45m) defined by field banks at NW and S and by a scarp (C 55m; H 0.5m) NE-E. About 30m beyond the scarp there is a shallow fosse (Wth c. 3-5m; D 0.2-0.3m) NE-E. There is no evidence of a church or burial. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 10 April, 2015

A castle at Vesingstowne (29) in Dunboyne parish and barony is marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony and parish maps (http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/). It is represented as a large structure with towers, a chimney, and a large gateway. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Robert Rochford of Kilbride parish owned 170 acres there in 1640 including ‘an old Ruinous Castle, a decayed chaple and ten tenements’ (Simington 1940, 126). Within the large parish he also owned land at Ballymacolly (73 acres), Castletown (Caulstown 96 acres), and Cornellstowne (110 acres) (ibid. , 117, 126). The castle is depicted as a fragment of a wall (L c. 5m E-W) on the 1836 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Banks and scarps, some connected with field drainage and a piece of fallen masonry are the only indication of the monument. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on a fairly level landscape. A large oval enclosure (dims c. 220m WNW-ESE; c. 100m NNE-SSW) that appears to be defined by a low earthen bank is visible on Google Earth (27/06/2019, 14/05/2020). It is bisected by a WNW-ESE canalised stream, and is also visible on LiDAR imagery from the Open Topographic Viewer. It was first reported by Jean Charles Caillére.
