This National Monument is located at the summit of the broad Hill of Ward, or Tlachta, which is so called as it is the mythical burial place of Tlachtga, the daughter of Mog Ruith, a powerful Druid (Macalister 1919, 346-8). It was also an Oenach site, or meeting place (Westropp 1919, 8), and its significance extended into the middle ages. Ruaraí O’Conor, the last High King of Ireland, presided over an assembly here in AD 1168, and in 1172 Tiernan O’Rourke, King of Breifne, was murdered here by Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Meath (Killanin and Duignan 1962, 75). The hill can be considered one of the royal centres of Meath, and it is at the centre of a relict landscape that can only be recorded through remote sensing techniques and excavation. The surviving visible monument is difficult to classify, but is most likely to be a multivallate ringfort, the central mound of which probably has a complicated sequence of deposits. The monument is accessible through a stile at the cross-roads and there is parking for about two cars at the nearby water tanks. The grass-covered visible remains consist of a circular platform (diam. 35m) with a quarry trench dug through it from N to the centre and E. The platform is defined by a scarp (H c. 1-1.5m) with an external fosse or berm (Wth 4-8m), outside of which are four banks with associated fosses (max. ext. diam. c. 140m). The visible profile of the banks (Wth 3-7m; int. H 0.5-1.4m; ext. H 0.6-1.9m) and fosses are destroyed NE-SE and badly interrupted at other points. There is an apparent entrance through three of the outer banks at NNE, but a remote sensing survey (12R0057) suggests that the entrance is at E or ESE. This survey also recorded an earlier triple-ditched ceremonial enclosure (ME030-001001-) beneath the visible monument and extending beyond it to the SW (Davis 2017, 3). The survey also recovered evidence of a small enclosure (ME030-001002-) to the S defined by a ditch feature (diam. c. 35m) which has an entrance at E. This is probably a small rath and may be slightly earlier than the surviving visible monument as the outmost perimeter of the latter appears to cut it. Linear earthworks (TL3) extending E from the third bank appear to cut through the fourth bank and may represent a road that connects with a road (TLE2) associated with the fields (ME030-040----) further E. Archaeological testing (07E0388) by C. Duffy c. 100m to the N produced no related material (excavatioins.ie 2007:1417). Archaeological excavation (E004474) in Trench 1 during 2014 across the outermost bank at N revealed the inner ditch to be rock-cut (D of rock 0.75m), and a fox-tooth from it produced a C14 date in the fifth century AD. The outer ditch was wider and shallower (Wth of top 5.9m; Wth of base 2.9m; D 0.56m). A test-pit (No. 2) at the centre of the monument uncovered the upper levels of what is probably a back-filled quarry-pit over stratified hearths. An oak post from the hearths produced a date between the 11th and 13th centuries AD. During 2015 Trench 5 was placed at the interface of the third bank of this monument with the small rath to the S, and demonstrated that the rock-cut ditch (Wth of top 4m; D 0.64-0.74m) of the visible monument truncated that of the smaller enclosure. Its uniform fills were probably bank collapse. A hearth at the upper level produced crucible fragments with evidence of silver, lead and copper alloy working. Radiocarbon determinations for samples from both ditches fall within the range of 390-540 AD. For summaries of the excavations see this web-page accessed on 18/04/2017: http://www.excavations.ie/report/2014/Meath/0023689/ (Moore and Davis 2017) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 21 April 2017 Amended: 29 January 2021 - ME030-001001: Ceremonial enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME030-001001-. Located towards the top of the S-facing slope of the broad Hill of Ward or Tlachta. The visible monument (ME030-001----) overlies a large subcircular enclosure (int. dims c. 170m x c. 195m) defined by three closely-spaced fosse features (ext. diam. c. 200-220m), which was identified in a remote sensing survey (12R0057). The three fosses sweeping from E to S appear to terminate at S, perhaps at an original entrance, although it is also c. 15m E of a modern installation, which may have disturbed their line. (Davis 2017, 3, TL 1) Archaeological excavation (E004474) in Trench 2 during 2014 NW of the visible monument and across the innermost fosse of the ceremonial enclosure recorded a rock-cut ditch (Wth of top 3.4m; Wth of base 0.75-0.85m; D 0.76-1.13m). A piece of cattle bone from the top of the fill produced a C14 date in the fourth century BC. During 2015 Trench 4 across the three rock-cut ditches at SE recorded the outer as a V-shaped (Wth of top 2.4m; D 0.9m) fosse separated by a berm (Wth 7m) from the central V-shaped ditch (D 1.13m), which had been re-cut twice. A further berm (Wth 4m) separated the central from the inner U-shaped fosse (Wth of top 3.4m; Wth of base 1.44-2.16m; D 1.26m), which was re-cut once. Lines of stake-holes and post-holes at the edges of this ditch suggest the presence of post-and-wattle walls, perhaps to retain earthen banks. Small deposits of human remains in the ditches could be votary, and animal bones occur throughout the ditch deposits. The upper level of each ditch is associated with metalled surfaces, but C14 determinations for the base of the fosse deposits are c. 1100 BC. For summaries of the excavation see this web-page accessed on 18/04/2017: http://www.excavations.ie/report/2014/Meath/0023689/ (Moore and Davis 0217) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 21 April, 2017 - ME030-001002: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CME030-001002-. Located towards the top of the S-facing slope of the broad Hill of Ward or Tlachta. A remote sensing survey (12R0057) identified a small enclosure (int. diam. c. 35m) defined by a single ditch feature which has an entrance gap at E. The N part of this fosse impinges on the line of the outermost bank of the visible monument (ME030-001----). (Davis 2017, 3, TL2) Archaeological excavation (E004474) in Trench 3 during 2014 at the S edge of the visible earthwork recorded a section of the rock-cut ditch (Wth of top 3.05m; D 0.8m) of this rath. A cattle bone from the primary fill produced a C14 date in the fifth century AD, and an inhumation of a 2 to 3-month old child from an upper fill in a rudimentary slab-lined grave has a C14 date in the same century. During 2015 Trench 5 was placed at the interface of this monument with the third bank of the visible earthwork and demonstrated that the rock-cut ditch of this rath was truncated by that of the larger enclosure. Located towards the bottom of the SE-facing slope of Wardstown Hill or Tlachta. This is a chapel-of-ease in Athboy parish and is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 53m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by earthen banks with trees. The church is listed as a chapel in Athboy parish called Kilcumny in Dopping’s visitation (1682-5) (Ellison 1972, 9). This is a corruption of Teampul Cuimhne – Remembrance chapel, by which it is still known locally. The church is not recorded in earlier listings. It is an undivided nave and chancel (int. dims 16.35m E-W; 4.9m N-S) defined by the W gable and the base of the other walls (Wth 0.8m; H 0.2-0.4m), with gaps for doorways in the N and S walls. The W gable with an ogee-headed window and a double belfry overhead is now obscured with ivy. The base of an octagonal font (dim. 0.45m; visible H 11cm) with a central drain-hole and chamfered edges is inside the church, and there is a headstone dated 1739 inside the church. Located at the bottom of the E-facing slope of the broad Hill of Ward or Tlachta. An area of habitation plots, fields and a sunken hollow way were identified on LiDAR material within a subrectangular field (max. dims c. 350m NE-SW: c. 170m NW-SE) (Davis, 2011, 39) before it was partially ploughed. There is evidence of narrow land divisions (dims c. 65m plus NE-SW; c. 25m NW-SE; H 0.2-3m) running along the W side of the area with a larger rectangular field (dims 120m NW-SE; c. 100m NE-SW) just to the E. This large enclosure has a raised rectangular area (dims c. 28m x c. 14m) at the E angle and a raised circular feature (diam. c. 25m; H 0.6m) outside the W angle, which is interpreted as a possible windmill mound. A remote sensing survey (12R0058) recovered evidence of two three-roomed house sites (dims c. 15m NW-SE; c. 4-5m NE-SW) located on a NNW-SSE street or hollow way that are probably associated with the smaller W fields. Three areas that are interpreted as possible middens were also identified. Situated at the base of a SE-NW spur on the N side of the Hill of Ward, or Tlachta. Two broad, low-profile banks extend E-W (L c. 300m) in a shallow arc which curves out to the N across the SE end of the spur. They were identified on LiDAR material, are parallel, and are placed c. 60m apart. The banks are interpreted as providing an initial defence across the SE end of the spur on the easiest approach to the surviving earthwork (ME030-001----) at the summit of the hill. Situated on a SE-NW spur on the N side of the Hill of Ward, or Tlachta. The cropmark of a small enclosure (diam. c. 20m) defined by a single fosse feature is visible on OSI aerial images (1995), but not on other aerial images. A remote sensing survey (12R0057) confirmed this feature (TLN2) and identified an entrance gap at S (Davis 2017, 6). The survey also recovered evidence of a field system (ME030-038-----) in the vicinity, but the fields cannot be connected directly with this enclosure. Situated on a SE-NW spur of the Hill of Ward, or Tlachta. A remote sensing survey (12R0057) confirmed the ring-ditch (ME030-038001-) and also identified evidence of a field system (TLN1) where the fields appear to be small rectangular areas (dims c. 40m x c. 40m) defined by single ditch features, but the fields cannot be connected directly with this ring-ditch or the linear earthworks (ME030-038----). Two small enclosures (dims c. 20-25m) on either side of an E-W field boundary ditch may be settlement enclosures or smaller fields. The recorded fields cover an area of c. 4 ha, but they undoubtedly extend further. Located on the gentle E-facing slope of the broad Hill of Ward or Tlachta. A remote sensing survey (14R0059) in the field E of the Tlachta earthwork (ME030-001----) identified a number of linear features some of which are interpreted as a roadway (TLE2) connecting the visible rath with the settlement cluster (ME030-34----) which is c. 700m to its E. The routes centre on a pond (TLE4), around which are three or four rectangular enclosures or fields (dims 63m x 36m to 93m x 55m), some of which may have associated house platforms.
