Located close to the N shore of Whitewood Lough, a subcircular lake (dims c. 580m N-S; c. 500m E-W). A small crannog was identified in 1955 when the level of the lake was lowered (NMI file). It consisted of a low mound (diam. 7m) composed largely of stones but had no other features. Its exact location is not known but it is probably still in the lake. (Eogan 1957, 54) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on a W-facing slope, it is described as ‘Lisbane’ – the White Lios – on the OS 6-inch maps. This is an oval grass and rush-covered area (dims 48m NNE-SSW; 34.6m WNW-ESE) defined by an earthen bank incorporated into a field bank (Wth of base 4.6m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.2-1.5m) and hedge. There is no visible fosse and there are modern entrances at SE and W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated against the W road bank of the R162 Nobber to Kingscourt road. They are described as ‘Stone Crosses’ in italic script on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map. There are four crude disc-headed or penal-style crosses (H c. 0.3-0.4m; span c. 0.3-0.4m), roughly formed and with no inscriptions. They are probably eighteenth century in date, and it is thought locally that they mark the graves of croppies from 1798. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Situated on a fairly level landscape with slightly higher ground to the N and E, and on the N side of the ENE-WSW avenue to Whitewood House. It is described as ‘Lisaniska’ from Lios an Uisce – the Water Lios – on the OS 6-inch maps. This is a subcircular grass and rush-covered area (dims 57.8m N-S; 52.4m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank, best preserved (Wth of base 5.5m; int. H 0.75m; ext. There are many entrances through the bank but only that at NW (Wth of base 1.7m) has a causeway (Wth of top 2.2m; H 0.6m). An ENE-WSW field bank and drain cut the monument towards the perimeter at S, and it is better preserved S of this feature. It remains unplanted in a forest (Digitalmap). Located on the S shore of Whitewood Lough, a subcircular lake (dims c. 580m N-S; c. 500m E-W), which had a bay (max. dims c. 190m NNW-SSE; c. 120m E-W) on the S shore at the point where the River Dee left the lake. When water levels fell during 1955 a large crannog became accessible. It is described as circular (diam. c. 35m) and was constructed entirely of stone. It was surrounded by two rows of piles and some large worked timbers were found on the E side. Three dug-out canoes were recorded, and early medieval pottery sherds and fragments of a disc quern were recovered. It is now attached to the S shore of the lake. (Ó Ríordáin 1955; Eogan 1957, 53-4) This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 223/1955).
