Situated in a slight fold towards the bottom of a S-facing slope. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 36m N-S; 31.3m E-W) that slopes down to the S (H 1.4m) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.6m) NW-NNE that morphs into a scarp (at W: Wth 2.5m; H 1.35m) and is incorporated into a field bank (at S: Wth 3m; H 2m) and hedge with a farm track outside it SE-SW. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). Situated on a S-facing slope. This rath, or its neighbour (MO027-088001-) c. 220m to the SE, is probably the enclosure at Upper Box depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793). This is a circular overgrown area (diam. 38m NNE-SSW) that slopes down to the S (H 3.1m) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.5m at N to 2.4m at S) that is incorporated into a field bank with trees NW-NE. There is no visible fosse but the entrance (Wth of base 1m) is at ESE. Inside the perimeter at N is the rock-cut entrance to a souterrain, which is a largely an unroofed passage running N (L c. 3m) where it widens into a small circular chamber with a cupboard in the wall at NW. From this the passage turns E (L 5.5m; max. Wth 1.5m; max. H 1.7m) and is roofed with lintels. The bank has been removed where it was built over the souterrain. Situated on a S-facing slope, and inside and beneath the bank of rath (MO027-067001-) at N. The rock-cut entrance is a largely an unroofed passage running N (L c. 3m) where it widens into a small circular chamber with a cupboard in the wall at NW. From this the passage turns E (L 5.5m; max. Wth 1.5m; max. H 1.7m) and is roofed with lintels. The bank has been removed where it was built over the souterrain. Situated on a SW-facing slope. This rath, or its neighbour (MO027-087001-) c. 220m to the NW, is probably the enclosure at Upper Box depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793). It is an overgrown circular area (diam. 28m N-S) that slopes down to the S (H 2.4m) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 4.8-6.2m; int. H 0.6m at S to 1.2m at N (upslope); ext. H 1.2m at N to 2.1m at S), which is incorporated into a field bank with an outer drain (Wth of top 3.4m; ext. D 0.8m) NNW-NNE. There is no visible fosse but the entrance (Wth of base1.4m) is at SSE, the lowest point of the interior, and the interior is bisected by a NE-SW field wall. There is a local report of a large lintelled underground passage in this rath (SMR file) but the only possible evidence of this is a hollow (dims 4.6m x 4.6m; D 1m) inside the perimeter at NW, and the report is probably confusing this rath with (MO027-087001-).
