Situated on the summit of an E-W drumlin ridge. It is depicted as a small circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 20m) on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’, and as a small oval enclosure on the 1907 edition. This is a subcircular area (dims 26.3m E-W; 23.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank and hedge with traces of an external fosse. There is no identifiable entrance. It may be a landscape feature. Archaeological testing (07E0028) c. 100m to the W at the nearest point in Edenamo townland produced no related material (Rohan 2008). Described on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map in gothic lettering as a 'Stone Cross'. It is built into the N-facing boundary wall at the main junction in Inishkeen village. It is a black painted cross (H 1.2m; span 0.64m) with the following inscription in gold across the head, transom and shaft 'IHS This cross was erected by Captain Coll MacMahon as a memorial of himself and his family & desires of prayeres of all the faithfull christians Sept the 2D Anno Domini 1729'. A bird with leaves around it, fills the lower part of the shaft. Located on a shelf towards the bottom of a N-facing slope and Immediately NE of the motte and bailey (MO029-033001-). It is depicted as a rectangular enclosure divided in two by an E-W cross-wall and described as a 'Pound' in italic letters on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This is a rectangular enclosure (dims c. 20m N-S; c. 20m E-W) with high stone walls that had a wide round-headed entrance through a large arch in the W wall. Only the lower courses of the N and E walls survive now. Located on a shelf towards the bottom of a N-facing slope and c. 300m N of a W-E section of the River Fane. It is also c. 200m S of the site of St Daigh’s early monastery (MO029-031001-). This is a flat-topped conical mound (diam. of top 13.6m E-W; 11m N-S; H c. 8m). The base is surrounded by a flat-bottomed fosse (at SW: Wth of top c. 3m; D c. 0.5m) SE-W-NE and an outer earth and stone bank. There is a small enclosure (diam. 7.8m E-W) defined by a broad earthen bank (at W: Wth of base 2.2m; int. H 0.5m) with an entrance at E (Wth 1.5m) on top towards the W edge of the summit. The bailey is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 35.6m E-W; 33.5m N-S) just to the E defined by a scarp (at NE: Wth 5.5m; H 2m) that merges into the slope E-S-W. The motte is planted in mature beech with alder and ash. There is reputed to be a souterrain (MO029-032001-) in the base of the mound. Archaeological testing (08E0358) c. 140m to the E produced no related material. There is a report that the motte at Inishkeen (MO029-03001-) contains an underground passage that was open in the early nineteenth century. An old man describes how as a boy he entered ‘a large passage lined with stones and covered with large flags. He came to a recess or small chamber where he found a well of water’ (Reade 1874-5, 326). Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c.1850, having further bay to west built as outbuilding. Now used for storage. Pitched corrugated-iron roof, red brick chimneystack in stretcher bond. Corrugated-iron and asbestos roofing to rear. Whitewashed rubble stone walls. Square-headed window openings having two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door opening set in windbreak with flat concrete roof with replacement battened timber door, set on stone platform approached by two cement rendered steps. Door opening to rear of outbuilding part blocked up. Ancillary buildings to west of house and detached stone outbuilding to east with painted battened timber door. Attached eight-bay two-storey public house, former post office and dispensary, built c.1780, now in multiple use as public house and private accommodation. Six-bay public house to west and two-bay private dwelling to east. Pitched slate roof, gabled to east and west, with replacement slates and clay ridge-tiles, having some cast-iron rainwater goods and some replacement uPVC rainwater goods. Lined-and-ruled cement rendered chimneystacks having terracotta pots. Rubble stone walls, having timber brackets to rendered eaves course and rendered sill course to first floor windows. Square-headed window openings with brick quoins and painted moulded timber window surrounds, with three-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows with variety of horns to first floor of north elevation, and replacement uPVC windows to ground floor. One six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window to east of shopfront, having painted stone sills, exposed brick quoins and gauged brick arch to opening. Square-headed display window and square-headed door opening to two most easterly bays introduced in early twentieth century. Late nineteenth-century carved timber shopfront to pub having ornate foliate console brackets to timber entablature. Painted 'DANIEL MCNELLO & CO.' lettering to fascia. Square-headed raised and fielded double-leaf door opening on either side of shopfront, separated by carved timber engaged pilasters and panelled stall-riser below replacement uPVC windows. Exposed screen wall to west with rendered and painted coping over integral gauged brick segmental-arch opening, and gauged brick camber-headed door opening having timber battened door, exposed screen wall continuing to west. Single-storey ancillary buildings to east, likely to have been farm buildings, later used for commercial purposes, now in use as private accommodation. Nineteenth-century two-bay two-storey roughcast extension to rear, with M-profile roof and rendered rectangular plan chimneystacks, square-headed window openings with original three-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to first floor south elevation, nineteenth-century sash windows to west and south elevations, and recent single-storey extensions to west and south (rear) elevations. Freestanding memorial shrine, built c.1950, containing plaster statue of the Pieta, re-erected from unknown location. Gable-fronted rectangular-plan concrete housing with pitched concrete roof having carved stone cross to apex. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls with concrete-rendered corner piers to east elevation having tooled stone crenellations. Pointed-arch door opening with chamfered surround and replacement uPVC door. Stylised diamond-shaped window openings to north and south elevations, having stained glass with flower motif tracery. Plaster statue on plinth of the Pieta, with Mary holding Christ after the Crucifixion. Rock-faced rusticated snecked limestone to bridge walls and to external elevations of abutment walls, rubble limestone to interior elevations of abutment walls.
